DS homebrew controls DSLR camera

Usually when we think of homebrew, we think of awesome games and tech demos and things like that. Not this, which is brought to us by Steve, who wished to work with his camera out in the real world, but didn't want to drag his bulky laptop around with him everywhere he went. So, he came up with his own solution by hacking a DS to work with his big fancy Canon camera, which allows him to do precise shooting and mess with a whole bunch of other settings. Good job, Steve!

Victorious Boxers bobs, weaves, jumps to DS

The Hajime no Ippo games -- based on a manga of the same name, or the US-anime title, Fighting Spirit -- have been all over the place, system-wise, and now it's time for the DS to take a turn. There's even a teaser site if you're interested in taking a peek. Victorious Boxers DS is already dated; it'll be out December 4, in Japan.

The last Hajime no Ippo game that was released for a Nintendo handheld (the GBA) came out of the revered corner of the industry known as Treasure, but this one, alas, comes from Grand Prix Games, developers of many a Victorious Boxers title. In fact, they're the folks behind the recent Wii game, which we enjoyed. Everyone else? Not quite as enthusiastic.

Pokemon Platinum nears a million sales in two days

Ever since its release in Japan earlier this week, Pokémon Platinum has sold like ... well, like a Pokémon game. Nintendo's latest in the long-running series has sold close to a million copies (967,675, if you're looking for a specific number) in just two days of being on store shelves. Ridiculous? To say the least!

We know a lot of you outside of Japan are crazy about those pocket monsters, so who's waiting to catch 'em all?

While DS games are mercifully cheaper than software on the home consoles, the sheer volume of must-have titles can make owning the handheld an expensive pastime.

So we've got a bit of math for you this morning, to keep that DS Fanboy-reading brain of yours sharp: on average, how much cash do you lavish on your DS per month, in terms of games, accessories, and other DS-related stuff? Is it more or less than you spend on other consoles? Have you just frightened yourself?

The DS Life: Wish Tree

"As a child in Japan, I used to go to a temple and write out a wish on a piece of thin paper and tie it around the branch of a tree. Trees in temple courtyards were always filled with people's wish knots, which looked like white flowers blossoming from afar." - Yoko Ono

Since the 1990s, Yoko Ono has helped install Wish Trees around the world, just like the ones she used to see in Japan, inviting passerbys to write down their wishes and tie them around the tree's branches. So far, the project has gathered over a hundred thousand wishes.

Many of the wishes are what you'd expect from such an idealistic installation, hopes for peace on Earth and goodwill towards all men. Some are goofy, like petitions for super powers, and a few are even vulgar, such as this one here. The bit of paper we're featuring for this edition of The DS Life, however, is a wish that might melt your heart. Join us past the post break!

Killer Fish and the Order of Ecclesia

Konami really wants us to get accustomed to Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia, for some reason. It's as though they think we won't embrace the title or something, since they keep waving around screenshots and soundtracks. We're surprised they're not shipping free demos and complimentary massage oil or something to potential buyers at this point. But listen, we're not complaining. We'll watch Shanoa beat down fish any day of the week. It's very important to keep those killer fish under control, you know.

The fall from grace. Unless your heart is nothing more than a cold, shriveled lump, you probably don't like to witness a once-respectable series slowly degrade. It's happened to many franchises. Often the decay is gradual, with gamers slowly noticing a decline in quality and is correlated with slumping sales. Other times a single misstep can throw an entire series against the ropes and nearly into submission. Either way, it's never pleasant to witness failure. Well, almost never.

What was once a prominent pillar in the stealth world has been slowly regressing into mediocrity. The Tenchu series was one of the first and most successful entries in the emerging stealth-based genre of the late 1990's. Though games involving evasive maneuvering over combat had been around for awhile, they truly flourished in 3D. From the onset, Tenchu was there. Peered with and rivaled against other top-notch franchises such as Metal Gear Solid and Splinter Cell, the word "Tenchu" was synonymous with heart-thumping, adrenaline-pumping sneaky gameplay. But everything eventually dies. And the Tenchu series received a terminal illness in the form of Tenchu: Dark Secret. Unless somebody steps in and performs some sort of miracle, we might have to talk to Tenchu fans about video game heaven. It's where all game franchises go when they pass away. All of Tenchu's friends are there, like Golden Axe, ToeJam & Earl, and Ecco the Dolphin (Sega, please prove me wrong on these).

Dear Mario, please come to the castle, I have made some awesome cosplay

It's been a while since we last checked in on Swedish/Japanese student Jenni Källberg, a.k.a Queen of Nintendo cosplay, but here are her two most recent creations: Zero Suit Samus (actually revealed last month), and her take on Princess Peach. What is it that elevates Jenni's cosplay above others? Simple: the outfits are obviously beautifully made, the props are brilliant (we really need a giant Goomba now, though yes, we know it isn't actually that size), and there's a sense of humor about her work. Well, Raccoon Mario's sudden appearance made us laugh, anyway.

Oh, and who hasn't encountered this problem? Just looking at that picture frustrates us!

The Lock's Quest DS revealed!

5th Cell sent us these lovely pictures of the custom Lock's Quest DS Lite that will serve as the prize in the contest held on their website. Somebody will get this for free, as a result of playing a cool Flash game. The one-of-a-kind DS appears exactly as the previous description, uh, described. We'll outline its features:

• Shiny, gunmetal grey system
• Illuminated buttons
• Hella illuminated stylized flame emblem
• 5th Cell and Lock's Quest logos
• Holy crap it's awesome
• Seriously

This DS is so cool that it may inspire someone to go out and buy Lock's Quest whether they like the idea of the action-strategy game or not (we're sure more like it than don't), just because it has the words on it that are also on this. Those blazing shoulder buttons call out to us. "Wiiiiiiin meeeeee. Plaaaay the Flaaaash gaaaame."

DS Daily: Too much of a good thing?

We were just talking yesterday about the ridiculous amount of RPG love the DS has gotten in the past and is getting in the future and wanted to ask you all if you thought the genre was being overused on the DS. Do you think the DS has way too many RPGs? Is there a genre of games you want to see more of on the DS?

So what do you all think? Too much of a good thing? Or do you love the RPG love the DS has received so far?

Suikoden: Tierkreis to feature 'rich' online experience

We've got roughly a gazillion RPGs to look forward to on the DS, and Genso Suikoden: Tierkreis is near the top of the pile. The game was first revealed last month in Famitsu, but since then an official site has opened (though is not exactly bulging with content yet, aside from the occasional character profile, as seen above) and Konami has dropped further details on the title.

The meat of the new press release is the news that Suikoden: Tierkreis will feature all-new online elements, which (Konami hopes) will spawn a "rich online community." How does it work? Apparently, players will be able to dispatch their characters on quests that other members of the community will then complete for them, before their character is returned to their party with new equipment, abilities and treasures. Make that two forthcoming DS RPGs with awesome online modes!

Blue Dragon Plus flaps our way next March

Only the twin juggernauts of Wii Fit and Rhythm Tengoku Gold could prevent Blue Dragon Plus from seizing top spot in the latest Japanese charts. Ignition Entertainment will be hoping for similar results when it publishes the big-haired, monster-summoning JRPG to not-Japan, and today it announced a North American and European release date of March 2009, falling in line with its promise of a release this fiscal year.

That's still quite a wait (you could say it will drag on, if you were a blogger looking for a lame joke to brighten up a dry story), though should nicely pad out a traditionally quiet time of the year.
