Mario Party DS trailer and screens arrive fashionably late

Mario Party's last handheld outing did not end well. In fact, Mario Party Advance was an absolutely witless selection of dour, unimaginative minigames, the vast majority of which were way too simplistic/based on luck to be worth our time. Yes, muggins here had to review it; did you sense any bitterness?

However, we maintain a degree of optimism for the arrival of Mario Party DS in just over ten days. For starters, we're looking forward to seeing how the DS's touchscreen tech is implemented, while the media you can see in this post and elsewhere shows potential. That, and the game has the bestest boxart EVAR.

Rumor: Mario Party DS may be online after all

Mario Party DS may have been one of the more exciting DS-related news items to come out of E3, except it was missing one very useful addition: Wi-Fi multiplayer. Wireless multi-card play was included, which is all well and fine, but a soft, sad sigh rippled through us as we realized we couldn't throw down over the internets, Mario Party-style.

But wait! Not all hope is lost, it seems. An image has turned up from Nintendo's 2007 catalogue that includes a Wi-Fi logo on the Mario Party DS page. But just what that tiny Wi-Fi logo means, we don't know. It could be Mario Mail rather than anything actually useful. It could even be a misprint for all we know -- but it gives us a tiny shred of hope for the future.

Would you like to read impressions of the DS Style series?

Game|Life's Chris Kohler got a chance to "play" with the DS Style collection at the Square Enix Party, and came away with positive impressions of the title we're most interested in: the classical music program which he translates as Would you like to listen to classical music on the Nintendo DS?

The program sounds pretty interesting: it contains 100 pieces of music, a shuffle feature, and information and images related to each piece. It also gives users information about buying the music on CD.

Kohler's impressions of the other titles weren't as positive, but it didn't sound like there was anything wrong with them. He just couldn't summon up the excitement for looking at maps.

The real Mario Party

There's a party going on tomorrow and the Tanooki got a sneak preview of the decor. It's a full-on Super Mario themed bash, complete with all the stuff you'd expect to find in a Mario game. This fantastic Chain Chomp piñata is just waiting to be smashed, hopefully by a jumping kid in a Mario costume. Seriously, if there's an invite going free, we'd love it.

Head past the break for the giant Pirahna Plants and chocolate coins!

Pokemon launch event at Nintendo World Store

New York City Pokemon fans: Nintendo wants to catch you all! If you are near the Nintendo World Store on April 22 and want your purchase of one of the first copies of Pokemon Diamond or Pearl to be a big deal, why not pick up your copy there and check out their launch party?

Nintendo promises that their event will bring attendees "live stage events, a Pokemon scavenger hunt, contests, and cool prizes like exclusive premiums, Pokemon Nintendo DS Lite units, Pokemon gear, and even tickets to some great summer sporting events!" Pokemon Nintendo DS Lite units, huh? Better go early to beat the eBay vultures. You know, so you can get your own to sell on eBay.

Creepy.Satoru Iwata (dressed as a vampire): DS Lite perform amazing feat in global market! More hundred thousand units in time of week! Much party enjoyment, everyone, so scary is coming!

George Harrison (dressed as Link): Ugh, these tights are starting to chafe. Perrin, wanna trade costumes?

Perrin Kaplan (dressed as a slutty cat): Um ... no. But you should ask around, really. Has anyone seen Matt? He looks so damn good in that costume ....

Matt Cassamassina (dressed as Mega Man, special guest to the event): Perrin. Storage closet. Now.

Perrin: Rawr.

Iwata: They are doing the fun, yes?

George: Uh, yeah. Where's Miyamoto-san, by the way?

Iwata: There. (points)

George: The dinette set?

Shigeru Miyamoto (dressed as a dinette set): Ah! You see, this is the inspiration for my next masterpiece. Get ready for the next generation of fun!

George: Sunnuva bitch. Miyamoto, stop doing shrooms, and...ah! Finally, someone normal. But why aren't you dressed up, Reggie?

Reggie Fils-Aime: What do you mean?

George: It's Halloween. You need a costume. You're just dressed normally.

Reggie: This is my costume.

George: ...

Reggie:
Bitch.

George: ...

Reggie: Now get me a sandwich.

George: Friggin' ... fine ....
