Nintendo sued over touch-screen technology

Another day, another lawsuit for Nintendo. Their wacky ideas have probably been done in some form or another over the years, and now everyone wants a profitable piece of the action. The latest candidate for a chunk of Nintendo's payroll is John R. Martin, who claims to have patented touch-screen and pointing gaming technology in 2005. One year after the DS was released. Despite being a bit late, the origins of the patent date back to 1995, so it's fair game for the courts now.

This image was submitted with the patent filing, apparently showing a device "switchable between an amusement mode and a gaming or gambling mode." The whole touching thing can be found under "operating a touch screen on a CRT or ICD." But gambling? Looks like that diagram is for someone who hides stuff under the table to cheat at blackjack or roulette.

Nintendo has denied the infringement, while Martin is pursuing another suit against Apple.

New Square trademark points to DQV localization

Dragon Quest fans, this could be a very good day for you. You see, the fine folk over at Siliconera stumbled upon an odd Square Enix trademark on file with the U.S. Patent Office. It's a trademark for "Hand of the Heavenly Bride," which you may know is just a longer version of the Japanese game's subtitle, Heavenly Bride. Coincidence? We should think not!

This means that the chance of Dragon Quest V being localized to the United States just got a lot better. The catch is that we probably won't see the game for quite some time, as it's due for release in Japan this July. Sadly, you still have some waiting left to do.

Super Mario Sisters was almost a reality

In some deeply weird alternative universe, perhaps one in which Japanese people actually bought Microsoft consoles and England's footballers weren't quite so irredeemably rubbish, we might never have experienced Super Mario Bros. as we know it. Instead, we could have been playing Super Mario Sisters.

Alas, Nintendo of America never did follow through on a trademark application it filed in February, 1990 for a game called "SUPER MARIO SISTERS." The application was abandoned almost two years later, depriving us all of an estrogen-fuelled version of the world's favorite platformer.

Go past the break for a grab of the application.

The motion sensing patent may have more history than we thought

No doubt you read about the newly-discovered Nintendo patent that describes a handheld gaming device with accelerometers in it to read motions. Ben Richardson from Games Radar got excited enough about the idea to take some silly pictures of hypothetical play sessions with such an item! Maybe 'excited' isn't the right word.

It certainly makes sense for Nintendo to explore the motion-sensing capabilities of the Wii for future gaming devices, including handhelds. But is this patent proof that they are?

Motion sensing in handheld games is not a new idea. Homebrew developers have been reading motion input for a while now, thanks to custom peripherals. And Nintendo has had their own experience with tilt control, in both WarioWare Twisted and Kirby Tilt & Tumble. But individual game cartridges with built-in motion-sensing tech and homebrew developments don't compare to a system designed from the ground up with motion control in mind. Certainly if Nintendo released such a system, it would change handheld gaming forever, right? Maybe not.

Nintendo thought about going into the cell phone business?

We never would've thought Nintendo was looking to the mobile phone industry with any kind of plans for branching out, but according to the linked patent, which was filed in November 2001 and issued in June 2006, they were (and could still be). The patent, which reads as "Electronic apparatus having game and telephone functions," doesn't really paint a picture. Luckily though, we yanked some screens from Engadget, so check them out after the post break.

Nintendo takes to the streets

Why limit all your retro gaming to the living room when you can do it in the car as well? Nintendo wants to bring a sort of Virtual Console to your trunk, a game server that can download new content and games that can be enjoyed from any passenger seat in the vehicle.

In filing for the patent, Nintendo refers to the systems already in place in hotels (and elsewhere), LodgeNet, the systems with the cheap, clunky controllers. Here's hoping Nintendo slims those down a bit for this idea, but there's nothing like playing a few rounds of your favorite old school games when on the go. And it's not like we can't do this already; after all, it's not that complicated to install a game system in a vehicle, or there's always the trusty DS. But Nintendo wants to make it easy. Why worry about collecting games and passing them around? Just get in, buckle up, and pick up your controller.

The documents also make specific mention that the 'car area network' can pipe into the vehicle's stereo system, just in case you have the urge to bump the Zelda theme at stoplights. And they want to bring in movies and music. Nintendo playing nice with other media? The future is upon us.
