Circuit City glitch leads to low, low prices

Electronics retailer Circuit City has an ongoing deal in which you can get any two games priced at $19.99 for only $30, but, because of a recently discovered glitch during the ordering process, customers have reportedly received a $10 discount for each $19.99 game they've thrown into their shopping carts, bringing their total even further down to $20 for two items.

Though many of the online shop's $19.99 titles are currently out of stock, we've put together a short list of the DS titles available that you might want to pick up with this buggy bargain. We can't guarantee that your order will stick once Circuit City's management catches wind of this bug, nor can we say whether or not exploiting this slip-up makes you a horrible person, but here you go:
  • Brain Age 2: More Training in Minutes a Day
  • Flash Focus: Vision Training in Minutes a Day
  • Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney: Justice For All
  • Sonic Rush
  • Spectrobes
While there are also a few GBA (as well as PS2 and PSP) titles eligible for this "deal," keep in mind that this glitch works best with two games from the same console.
  • Pokemon Leaf Green
  • Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis
  • Super Mario Advance

Reminder: End of the Year Blowout (day eight)

Each day, between now and the 26th, we're going to look at a different piece of the DS Fanswag End of the Year giveaway as a reminder of exactly why you need to hightail it over there and enter -- and there's not much we have to say about today's featured titles. Why? Because they're Pokémon. That's right, folks: the Grand Prize winner picks up Pokémon Diamond, and it's Pearl for the First Prize, with a matching stylus for each. Want 'em? Go enter the contest! Remember, you can enter once per day. And if you're having any trouble with the comments, check here for a handy walkthrough.

Readers' Choice: The best of 2007

It was a good year for games with titles beginning with the letter "P" -- at least, according to you guys. When asked, you didn't hesitate to rattle off some of your favorite titles of the year, from Phantom Hourglass to Puzzle Quest, and now the time has come to crown the winner. Just to make things interesting, we're allowing you to choose more than one game -- and to vote more than once (though only once per day). So get in there and duke it out, DS fans. There's a title at stake.

Tomorrow, we'll take a look at some of the year's other great games, those selections that didn't receive quite as much attention when we asked you to name your favorites, but all the same, games that are deserving of a little extra time in the spotlight.

What's your pick for the best game of 2007?
Bleach: Blade of Fate
Contra 4
Etrian Odyssey
Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings
The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass
Picross
Pokemon Diamond/Pearl
Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords

Five gifts that PAL gamers should import this Christmas

Gaming sites are inundated with holiday gift guides at the end of the year, listing the best and most popular games that everyone pretty much already has (or knows about). Well, we're not going in for that this year. Our gift guide will help you find the best gifts in categories the other sites won't cover -- because we just made them up.

Nintendo's indifference towards PAL regions is infamous, but there's arguably less room for complaining when it comes to the DS. See, the DS is (and we do not use this phrase lightly) an importer's dream. It doesn't faff around with region-specific software, there's a huge library of diverse and interesting NTSC-only titles, and the games themselves are cheap. As in, cheaper than they'll be when they arrive in the UK/Europe/Australia six months from now. Frankly, we can't think of a good reason for you not to import.

Which brings us to our latest anti-guide, featuring the five DS-related gifts that PAL regions won't be seeing until 2008 at the earliest -- if ever. All deserve to be imported without hesitation, so read on fellow PAL folk, and prep that credit card!

Pair of Pokemon Lites pop up on eBay

eBay seller viper640_0 (who hails from POWER SELLER VILLAGE, apparently, which is near A+++ town), has posted two custom DS Lite paint jobs featuring those wily Pokémon. Rather than going on at length about these hot little numbers, we'll let viper640_0 tell you all about them:

Dont pay 350.00 or more for Pokémon Diamond & Pearl DS-Lite when you can have this one and save 100.00 or more. (Well, tell us more!)

Note: there are some small imperfections in the clear coat. but this is still an awsome work of art!!!
(Hmm, the number of exclamation points raise suspicion.)

I took a Crimson Red & Black ds -lite and made it 200% better (
Well, it's certainly de-seniored, at least.)

This DS-Lite is awsome in every way.
(But will it wash the car? That would be pretty awesome.)

There's another custom job up for auction as well -- another retooled Crimson and Black Lite -- that is Poké-free. At least, we think so. It's hard to tell exactly what that is. We are, however, sure that it would be just perfect for that "birthday Girl or Boy."

My Christmas decorations: let me show you them

Spencer over at Siliconera grabbed this picture of some festive holiday lighting for sale in Shibuya, fashioned into some familiar shapes. They look just like Pikachu and the Diamond and Pearl starting Pokémon, if those Pokémon had been made out of mesh and LEDs! Which they may be -- we've never examined one up close.

We'd be afraid to put these out in the yard out of fear that some local Ash wannabes would capture them. They sure are nice, though. You know who would like this? Lots of people outside of Japan.

It's officially the Christmas season now, which means we will start having excuses to link to the Fruity Pebbles Christmas commercial. We'll have to carefully ration out the links over the holiday season, so we don't overdo it! Oh, who are we kidding? It is impossible to overdo that commercial.

Get the Pikachu DS Lite, plus some games or something

Finally, American gamers have a shot at the yellowest DS Lite ever, thanks to the Pokémon Center. Unfortunately, if you're enough of a Pokémaniac to want one of these, you probably already have Diamond and/or Pearl, both of which come bundled with the unit. Also included: a Pokémon Diamond/Pearl "scenario guide" and a Pokédex book, also known as "bundle bloat."

All that extra stuff, plus the usual rarity tax, means that you'll be $345.95 in the hole for choosing this DS Lite. But that's about what you'd pay for just the unit on eBay, without having to buy it from some dude who is probably ripping you off in a unique way.

Half-time band makes sweet game music

The combination of half-time shows, videogame medleys and marching nerds is nothing new, but this could be the best example we've seen yet. The footage above was shot at the UC Berkeley versus Washington State game earlier this month, and sees a rigorously drilled band belting out a string of songs from a glut of Nintendo favorites, including Zelda, Mario, and Pokemon. We only hope some of the crowd can appreciate the brilliance that's unfolding before them.

It's the formations that really make it for us, though. That bit with the flag at the end is an absolute win in our book.

Eau de Pikachu

Not content with appearing on everything from headphones to lunch boxes to aeroplanes to lil' kites, Pikachu has now joined the likes of Christina Aguilera and Sean 'Diddy' Combs in fronting a perfume line. This Pokémon perfume is manufactured by Air Val International, and is made entirely from water and the finely ground bones of captured Pokémon surprisingly affordable -- Shop.com has it on offer at a tempting $15.

Anybody out there actually picked this up? Because if so, we need to know what Pokémon smell of.

Pokemon teaches more than just kidnapping

Seriously, when you think about Pokemon, in a lot of ways, it teaches you how to be a competent kidnapper. You find your target, physically beat the snot out of them until they can barely move and are on the verge of death, then you capture them in a ball and force them to fight for your amusement. Of course, that won't stop us from collecting them all, because we always finish what we start. Our parents just raised us that way.

All joking aside, turns out some folk at Nintendo, The National Institute of Aerospace (NIA) and Nortel LearniT think that there's more to these Pokemon than meets the eye (someone should get on combining Transformers and Pokemon). They think that Pokemon can teach kids about science. At www.masterthescience.org, several lesson plans explaining how those that inhabit Pokemon Diamond & Pearl can teach science can be found.

If only they had cool lesson plans like these back when we went to school, we might be doctors right now, instead of being chained to a laptop.

Obscure Pokemon gets its own limited-edition items

Octillery, a Gold/Silver-era Pokémon who we had to look up just now (because we've never seen or heard of it) is the focus of a new promotion at Japan's Pokémon Centers. Between November 23 and December 9th, Diamond/Pearl players can bring in their level 65+ Octilleries (called "Okutan" in Japan) and receive a special Octillery sticker, seen above. It's a pretty nice promotion and a nice piece of art for this octopus-thing, we think.

This isn't the first limited-edition Octillery item. The Tokyo store gave away Octillery headbands to high-level Octillery owners in July. Is this a popular Pokémon or something? Is it the jaunty headband?

Nintendo's new marketing exec gets the profile treatment

When word hit that Perrin and George (and Beth) were hitting the road, Nintendo quickly found a few good bodies to take their place. Taking over the role of chief marketing officer is Cammie Dunaway, who spent some time with Yahoo! and Frito-Lay. Seeing as how this is her first foray into the gaming industry, we all don't know much about her.

Well, thanks to MediaPost, we're given a bit more information about her. Like how her young son is in love with Pokemon, as she states "I've seen the excitement on my nine-year-old son's (Davis) face when he's playing a Pokemon game on his DS and spots someone else at the airport playing, too. They become instant friends." A marketer through-and-through, eh? Dunaway will be leaving her position at Yahoo! and starting at Nintendo come Monday.

Halloween is serious business at the Pokemon Center

Halloween in Japan is apparently pretty cool, at least in terms of the corporate response. Brian Ashcraft from Kotaku showed off this trick-or-treat bag from the Pokémon Center in Osaka. Of course, it's quite a nice bag, with full-color, completely original Pokémon art covering every surface.

But what's really cool is that the bag is filled with Pokémon-branded candy and treats! We find that kind of dedication impressive. It's also just plain nice of the Pokémon Center to hand this stuff out, even if it is a tactic to bring people in. We imagine that most places would give out a plastic bag or a single piece of candy at most.
