Promotional Consideration: Tactical advertisements

Did you forget that Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift ships in North America this week? We wouldn't be surprised if you did, as, aside from two magazine advertisements, Square Enix hasn't done much to promote the SRPG sequel.

In fact, unless we've missed something, the only two handheld game commercials Square Enix has aired in the U.S. since the GBA were for the Final Fantasy III remake and Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker -- Mario Hoops 3-on-3 doesn't count. That's a shame considering how creative the original Final Fantasy Tactics Advance commercial was!

Bring your mages, ninjas, and gunners past the break for the GBA clip and the two FFTA2 magazine pieces we mentioned above!

Doctor argues benefits of Brain Training, probably has a brain age of 63

Nicole Kidman's endorsement of Nintendo's software for the DS has one doctor in particular crying "humbug." Dr. Jason Braithwaite, a cognitive neuroscientist (maybe after playing enough Brain Age, we'll figure out what that is exactly), seems to be of the mind that using the non-game exhibits "no conclusive evidence showing that the continued use of these devices is linked to any measurable and general improvements in cognition." This all stems from him seeing one of Kidman's adverts, where she states "I have quickly found that training my brain [with Nintendo's Dr Kawashima's Brain Training computer game] is a great way to keep my mind feeling young"

"Practice at any task should lead to some form of improvement for that specific task," he adds. But, we wonder if that applies here. Sure, individual tasks in repetition will undoubtedly cause one to improve at completing them, but the exercises in Nintendo's title are varied and the whole goal of the game isn't to sit there for hours on end, practicing individual exercises. The daily training, along with the sudoku, and other items that make up the whole package come together to bring forth the improvement felt by the user. These are small sections of the user's day devoted to the working the brain, when the time could otherwise be used to waste brain power by watching TV or, if it were us and we were afforded spare time in our day, sleep.

DS Daily: Nintendo Advertising System

In honor of our weekly Promotional Consideration column, which you should be reading, we thought we'd ask about your favorite game-related commercials. We grew up bombarded by Nintendo commercials, including Zelda raps, Devo-esque cereal jingles, and ... okay, we don't remember seeing an ad for Mendel Palace. Seriously, that's a big budget for advertising Mendel Palace.

And that's just Nintendo. We can't forget the years we spent being yelled at by Sega. What about you? What is still burned into your brain?

Promotional Consideration: Come As You Are

Promotional Consideration is a weekly feature about the Nintendo DS advertisements you usually flip past, change the channel on, or just tune out.

If you missed our spotlight on Leo Burnett's "Communion Day" ad last Sunday, make sure to give it a glance. Even if you've already skimmed through our words on the award-winning piece, we've updated our summation with some insight from art director Rosemary Collini Bosso.

This weekend's installment of Promotional Consideration takes a critical eye to an unconvincing ad that might actually drive away consumers. Read on for more details.

What's better than a free DS from Comcast?

The even freer commercial they made for it! To promote their new offer of a free DS with subscription to a whole bunch of stuff, Comcast hired John Kricfalusi to make a promotional animation. It's quite a bit better than pretty much any cable company commercial we've ever seen, and definitely a lot better than any Flash ad we've seen on a website. Animation this brilliantly weird should not be buried in Comcast's website.

Kricfalusi is best known as the creator and occasional voice of Ren & Stimpy and the founder of Spümcø International. You can see some sketches for the ad on his blog, as well as lots and lots of animation nerdery.

Oh, and also, if you need phone, internet, and cable TV, you should think about signing up with Comcast right now and getting a free DS Lite out of it.

Promotional Consideration: Communion Day

Promotional Consideration is a new weekly feature about the Nintendo DS advertisements you usually flip past, change the channel on, or just tune out. Our christening post takes a look at an Italian ad for the handheld that won Epica's silver award for Press last year. Check past the post break for the full image.

Nicole Kidman enjoys Nintendo products*

Academy Award winner Nicole Kidman has joined the ranks of the brain-trained. The star of Practical Magic, Batman Forever, and Days of Thunder has agreed to become the official face of More Brain Training (well, the other official face) in a series of print and television advertisements to be shown across Europe.

"I love the concept that Nintendo is reaching out to new audiences with their self improvement products like Brain Training," Kidman said. "Most importantly, I've quickly found that training my brain is a great way to keep my mind young." Maybe now Nintendo and Brain Age will finally be able to achieve some success.
