Promotional Consideration: Advertising with Power, revisited

If you recall, back in November, we put up a short piece on the increasing number of ads in Nintendo Power after the magazine was handed over to Future US, the same publisher behind the official Xbox and PlayStation magazines.

Chris Slate, Nintendo Power's new editor in chief, explained the ad-bloated issues: "Love or hate the ads, their number should go down significantly over the next couple of issues as we move away from the busy holiday selling season. We saw a huge upswing in ad pages last month because more games than ever are being released right now for the red-hot Wii and DS. However, new titles will slow down midway through December, and the ads will follow suit."

So, now that we've put a few months in between us and December, has the magazine kept its promise, scaling back the number of ads in favor of delivering more news, reviews, and previews? Jump past the post break for the breakdown.

Advertise the Game Boy to yourself every day

While the prospect of advertising the Game Boy to ourselves every day sounds pretty good, we're going to have to pass on this auction for one of the sweetest things you could put on your wall. As has always been our luck, we're sadly stuck in the unfortunate position of having no monies to spend on anything right now, so it's not like our opinion regarding this lenticular display matters. Oh well ...

What do you all think? Would you find hanging this sign up on your wall is as badass as we imagine it to be, or could you care less?

GDC08: Professor Layton watching over GDC

Nintendo's absolutely relentless promoting of Professor Layton and the Curious Village has shown no signs of letting up at the ongoing Game Developers Conference.

Siliconera's Spencer Yip spotted this giant rotating projector advert for the game looming over the North Hall of the Moscone Center (the GDC venue), and also reports that nearby bus stops are sporting their fair share of Layton ads. It's great to see Nintendo's American arm being so supportive of the game -- here's hoping all of this hard work reflects in the sales figures!

DS Daily: Advertising and you

Last night we commemorated (a pretty good amount of) a year of the excellent Promotional Consideration column, which deals with game advertising. There's no doubt that game advertising has the power to entertain, but can it also, you know, sell games?

Take the Let's Tarot campaign, for example. Did anyone see popular actress Kanako Yanagihara in the ads and think, "I believe I will purchase this product. The reason is that I am a fan of Ms. Yanagihara's work, and she has accepted money in exchange for the association of her likeness with the item in question."? Or Jam Sessions's bizarre New Zealand ad campaign, which associates receiving the product with becoming an awful person.

Is being memorable all it takes to be successful as an ad? Have you ever been swayed by game advertising, or reminded sufficiently of something you were interested in to go get it?

DS Daily: Ad power

Every week, we take a look at interesting, rare, or international Nintendo ads, but today, we want to talk about the more mundane, every day variety -- specifically, the ones you see. Where do you see them? We ask because, in our experience, Wii advertising is much more widespread, but it could be just where we happen to be looking. Where do you see DS commercials or print ads? Do you think they're effective?
