Holiday games for homebrew gamers

We love these homebrew contests, as they always bring out a batch of new games and applications for us to try out. Over 20 programmers entered the 2007 Drunken Coders Christmas Game Coding Competition, an event in its third year running. The entries are currently being reviewed by the Drunken Coders judges, and the winners will receive donated cash and hardware prizes.

Though developers were asked to produce only holiday-themed works for the DS and GBA (several of the submissions have ignored this requirement), the wintry games still manage to span a variety of genres, ranging from Christmas Turkey, a retro-ish collect-a-thon platformer, to VirusDS XmaSS Edition, a Christmas-skinned update of the adult puzzler we've featured previously. All 24 titles are available for you to download and play.

The game that will likely immediately stick out to most gamers is Halo NDS Beta, a very basic release that bears little resemblance to Bungie's FPS. Whatever potential the beta shows seems naught, however, as the programmer claims to have "lost the source code" while explaining why he couldn't add any Christmas cheer to the project. You're better off playing Lily and the Lost Angel, the simple-but-fun shmup pictured above, or Snowman Attack, a Geometry Wars-esque shooter.

The DS Life: I Still Know What You Did Last Unwrapping

The DS Life is a weekly feature in which we scour the known world for narrative images of Nintendo's handhelds and handheld gamers. If you have a photo and a story to match it with, send both to thedslife at dsfanboy dot com.

Look at this girl. She is totally freaking out about her new DS. Just totally - freaking - out. We couldn't care less that Christmas is long behind us, as is the entire 2007 year; we felt it our duty to show you this photo of a girl going absolutely banoodles as she unwraps her gift.

You've likely already deduced our intentions from the article image and title -- we're cashing in on last week's wildly popular installment of The DS Life with a hastily-put-together sequel. As is often the case with these repeat productions, we've done away with the charm of the original, replacing it with a bigger budget and an all new video cast!

Friday Video: To the floor with you!

This kid is undeniably excited about receiving a DS and games for Christmas -- you can tell by the frantic gyrations and leaping about -- which is why we can't understand why they are all flung to the floor after a moment of celebration. We can only guess that's what happens when you give a child a "senior edition" DS Lite. Oh well. The mysterious dichotomy of excitement and flinging makes for a fun moment in our weekly video spotlight.

[Update: Aww, the video has been removed. What a way to spoil our fun!]

WRUP: Say goodbye to 2007 edition

Well, this is the last weekend of 2007 and the last WRUP for this year, as well. And, sure enough, there isn't a single new release to discuss for the final WRUP of 2007. So, that means you'll have to resort to your gifts from the holiday to get you through this weekend, that is unless you have already gone through all of them. Knowing our readers and their enthusiasm, that is entirely likely. But, no need to fear, a few of you will be getting a truckload of new games to enjoy soon enough.

So, what will you be playing during the last weekend of 2007?

Purple DS, Purple DS

Seeking to convert his girlfriend, Rachel, into a handheld gamer, DS Fanboy reader Shawn wrapped this custom-painted Nintendo DS and put it under their Christmas tree along with copies of Nintendogs, Cooking Mama, New York Times Crosswords, and My Word Coach.

In order to achieve that smooth shine, the system was disassembled, sanded, primed, spray painted, then finished with a high gloss clear coat. Shawn chose the metallic sparkling purple, the color of royalty, because it's his girlfriend's favorite color. You can follow the project's progress and see more photos of the painted DS on Shawn's Flickr set.

Show and Tell: A little post-Christmas spirit

Christmas may be over, but we're still showing off your goods on a weekly basis, and we want to extend the holiday just a little bit longer. What better way to do so than with these bitchin' ornaments? Reader Michael reports that his brother and the brother's girlfriend got the idea for these ornaments after seeing some 1-up mushrooms a friend made for him. The pair decorated their entire little tree with Mario-themed ornaments! Well, except for one ... can you pick out which in the pictures after the jump?

Remember, if you have something to show off, we want to see it. From crafts to cakes to collections ... whatever you've got, if it has a little Nintendo flavor, we want to see it. Just take some pictures (or copy your web album links) and send them to showmeit [at] dsfanboy [dot] com. We'll take care of the rest.

Provided they were on Santa's "Nice" list, hundreds of thousands of children (and adults, of course) woke up to find a dual-screened handheld under their tree yesterday. We like to imagine that these new DS owners held the system box high over their heads while The Legend of Zelda's "item fanfare" music played. We also like to picture them running to their computers shortly afterwards to load up and bookmark www.DSFanboy.com, as well.

Rather than spend too much time dwelling over what their reactions might have been like, why don't we take a look past the break for photos from ten different post-unwrapping scenes?

A very Mario Christmas

How sad we are to see the holiday come to an end. No more Christmas tunes and hot cocoa just doesn't taste the same to us anymore. If only we had a giant mural like the one above to visit for an instant jolt of that Christmas feeling. It's a HUGE mural, if we may say so, and came out looking fabulous.

Gotta deck the halls

Looking for some cute Christmas music to play in the car during a family trip, Kotaku's Brian Crecente happened upon this horror: Pokémon Christmas Bash, a Pokémon-themed album of Christmas music from 2001. If you're curious, check out the samples on iTunes. If you like what you hear (for some reason), or want to give a last-minute gift of lulz, the album is available both on CD and in MP3 format from Amazon for the low, low price of $6.98.

Featuring sure-fire holiday classics like "I'm Giving Santa a Pikachu This Christmas" and, uh, "Pokémon Christmas Medley," Pokémon Christmas Bash is destined to become part of every family's holiday collection, joining favorites like Ren & Stimpy's Crock O' Christmas.

DS Fanboy poll: Enjoying DS with the family today?

When we were cruising around flickr today, looking at pictures of folks enjoying the holiday, we came across the picture above. We then began to wonder if you were enjoying some DS with your family. And what better way to find out then to toss up a poll? So, let us know how you're doing today and if the DS is making it better.

Are you rocking your DS with the family today?

The Twelve (well, thirteen, actually) Sales of GameFly

Video game rental service GameFly has a pretty big year-end sale going on through January 4th for over 30 of its used DS games. Though the carts are all pre-played, each one will come with a new manual and case, so you need not worry about receiving an incomplete set.

As usual, we've picked the notable titles out of the bunch and listed them for you, except this time, we've done it in Christmas carol form!

No better way to decorate than with wisdom, power and courage

With Christmas approaching at breakneck speeds, many are scrambling to get all of their gifts secured and their task of wrapping them complete. Not to mention that many a home still need decorating in that timeless family tradition of tossing up lights (way too many if you're a Griswold). Or, you can do like these fine chaps did and toss out your star or angel that usually rests atop your tree and replace it with a Triforce. Pretty sweet, if we may say so.

[Thanks, Nick!]

I'm dreaming of a Pac-Man LED Christmas

This "tree" definitely puts the one at Rockefeller Center to shame.

Located at Nuevos Ministerios in downtown Madrid, this animated LED display features everyone's favorite power pellet abuser, Pac-Man himself.

You may notice that the cherries, pretzels, and other guzzle-able items have been replaced by a Christmas tree, holiday bells, ribbons, and stars. Nice touch.

To see a gargantuan picture of the Pac-Man tree (or at least a larger image than the one to your right) and some video action of it, jingle all the way past the break.

Homebrew carts for Motocross Challenge and more

Remember Motocross Challenge, that cancelled Excite Bike GBA clone we raved about last April? Developer DHG Games posted a downloadable ROM for the homebrew community to play with, but for those of you who prefer tangible products, RGCD has a limited run of less than a 100 Motocross Challenge cartridges for sale for £7.00 to UK customers (£8.25/$17.00 for worldwide customers). As we made sure to mention several times in our preview, it's a terrific title, and this physical release even has a limited save function included as a bonus.

Several other GBA homebrew carts are available for purchase at RGCD's shop, the latest of which is a Christmas Double Pack containing Santa's Chimney Challenge, Santa's Skidoo Scarper, and a hidden game. While you can find descriptions and ROMs for the titles at developer Ian Jeffray's site, keep in mind that Santa's Skidoo Scarper is meant to be played with your handheld turned sideways. UK residents can pick up this Christmas Double Pack for as low as £5.50, while the rest of the world will have to fork up £6.75 ($13.91).
