Friday Video: 2D Friday in full effect!

We're taking that whole walking in a straight line and jumping on everything to heart, because, y'know, we're linear like that. We also like our destruction with a heavy dose of bouncing around. And also, guns.

Can you guess what video we might be choosing to celebrate today? If not, we can only guess that you haven't been paying attention to our very particular tastes. That's okay -- we forgive you. Or we will if you head past the post break to check out this week's featured video.

Finally confirmed: SimCity DS to America

Awesome.Proving once and for all that virgin sacrifices to a multitude of shadowy deities does in fact yield results, a rather confused EA finally announced a stateside version of SimCity DS (based off of SimCity 3000), that lovable juego de ciudad from our long-forgotten youths.

Some extra features that you may or may not have known about? It turns out you can put out fires by blowing into the mic of the DS (hardly a substitute for proper fire fighters, we think). You can "sign off" on various deeds and proclaimations with a whip of the stylus, and there will apparently be some form of wireless data exchange. Our guess is that players will able to "neighborize", by which one another's cities will become adjacent in the game's geography.

City-snatching UFOs, here we come!

[Thanks, Tom!]

Save the City mode in Sim City DS revealed

Siliconera was lucky enough to get a copy of EA's SimCity DS recently and spoke about the game mode they've been sinking most of their time into the game's "save the city" mode. This mode takes the player and tosses them into a pre-built city that has just suffered a catastrophe (such as the pictured giant ape attack). The player is then charged with rebuilding the city back up. Other scenarios include UFO attacks and fixing traffic problems.

The more we see and read on this game, the more we must have it. We can't be alone, can we?

New Sim City DS screens, no US announcement yet

Courtesy of NeoGAF, some new screens for the highly-desired Sim City DS, which is releasing in Japan next month, have hit the internet and caused many a DS Fanboy staff member to salivate uncontrollably. A game that is, in essence, just a port of Sim City 3000, we still find ourselves wishing for some city-building action on-the-go.

What we cannot wrap our head around, however, is just why this game hasn't been officially announced for the states yet? Is it something we said, Japan? Perhaps we were too rough on you last night? We promise we'll be more gentle next time! It's just, we love you so much ...

The REAL party is in my DS

We're not based in Kansas City, which isn't so much a bad thing, but it does keep us from receiving certain newspapers on a regular basis. One writer for the Kansas City Star had a few things to say about the DS Lite and a certain game for it known as Super Princess Peach. Stating that she "never thought I'd be one of those people who would choose a video game over a party," Jeneé Osterheldt has first-hand felt the fever we all so frequently fail from: Nintendo fever.

So whether you want to consider her personal experience a downward spiral of self-loathing and disgust akin to how one gets hooked on, and subsequently dies from, drugs or a clever look at the appeal of gaming in the modern world, it's all an interesting read.

New Sim City DS screens

Some new Sim City DS screens have surfaced, and if we weren't dying for this game before, we're certainly in danger of perishing now. The DS just seems like such an incredible medium for this title, and the screens have a familiar, almost nostalgic feel that brings to mind the old SNES game Utopia, particularly in the shot to the right.

Our (Google) translation isn't perfect, but it looks like this build of the game is not a port, but was designed specifically for the DS, so we can tentatively expect some really fantastic functionality. Further, there are changes to the game made specifically for the Japanese version. Once we get more detail on what those are, we'll let you know -- and that makes us very curious if English-language versions will feature similar additions.

Check after the jump for a few more screens.

Wii news and how the DS was affected

Nintendo's US press event recently concluded and while all of your Wii information needs have probably been satisfied, nothing else was discussed about Wii-DS connectivity. We know that Iwata already said that the WiiConnect24 service could be used to download content to the DS, whether it be a demo or something else, and also that the DS could also be used as a controller through the Wii's menu interface, but this was not demonstrated at the event or further discussed there.

So what does this mean? Probably nothing. We should still see Nintendo's handheld play a large role in the Wii's interactivity and extra content. We should still see the DS downloading demos from the WiiConnect24 service. We should still see the DS being used as a controller to navigate menus in the Wii's interface. Just because Nintendo didn't show any of the features you'll be able to access on the Wii through the DS doesn't mean they aren't coming. We should be seeing and hearing more on the two consoles interacting as the launch date for the Wii draws near.

Reminder: Grandparents contest tomorrow

We've already informed you of the contest and like the tough, determined reader you are, you've no doubt abducted your grandparent of choice from their nursing home or other place of residence and put them on a strict gaming regimen much like that of a fictitious boxer. We know you take these things seriously and look forward to winning those 2 DS Lites and 10 games. But, in case you decide you'd rather disappoint us, you could stop by for the 10% discount on all things purchased.

Any of you readers planning on stopping by the event? Take some pictures and send them in. Maybe tell us how the competition went down?

Huge summer Circuit City sale [Update]

[Update: A commentor, and employee of Circuit City in IL, by the name of Hughes has said that his store is putting these sale items out July 3rd. Any more employees want to step forward to confirm this day?]

A poster over at CAG reports of a sale going on over at Circuit City, officially starting July 4th weekend, in which a slew of Nintendo DS titles will be going on sale for $8.96 a piece. While some of the titles are best avoided, getting a copy of Advance Wars for such a small sum is a blessing most divine. The list, unchanged from its forum post, reads:
  • Advance Wars

  • Finding Nemo
  • Goldeneye Rouge Agent
  • Great Juju Challenge
  • Gulty Gears Dust Strike
  • Incredibles Rise Of The Underminer
