WRUP: custom robo edition

Sure, DS owners should be happy this week with the release of a handful of new titles, but most of us in the U.S. have been looking forward to Custom Robo Arena. That's how we plan to spend our weekend, but how do you plan on spending yours? What are you playing? Will you, like us, seek to customize mechs for battle, or do you perhaps have something a little more strategic in mind? Perhaps you seek to run a theme park?

Let us know in the comments!

Metareview: Custom Robo Arena

With a fresh Wi-Fi Connect compatible game hitting the market today, many might be looking to Custom Robo Arena to spice things up and offer a new experience for Wi-Fi play. Not only that, the promise of customizable robots is sure to be enough to entice any gamer, be they an enthusiast of the DS or any other system.

So how did the game fair with the critics? Read on and find out:
  • GameSpy (80/100) thinks the game was developed for the young'ns: "Simple and sublime, Custom Robo Arena was quite clearly developed with the little tykes in mind, but that didn't stop me from enjoying it."
  • GameSpot (79/100) gets our hopes up as they laud the multiplayer: "Exciting action and great multiplayer make Custom Robo Arena a game well worth playing."
  • 1UP (75/100) doesn't have great things to say: "It's too bad, then, that Custom Robo Arena's RPG elements are so mundane, a connect-the-dots of talk to this character, trigger this event."
  • IGN (70/100) says the game could've been better: "The Nintendo DS version of Custom Robo won't raise the franchise up to a "must have" status in the Nintendo library of first-party titles, but apart from the boring RPG story it's not such a bad diversion."
  • GameDaily (70/100) finds the game easily forgotten: "A likable (if not quite memorable) game for the Nintendo DS. The presentation could've use a little sprucing up and some parts of the story stretch on for way too long (such as the school segments)."
Have any of you picked this up yet?

DS releases for the week of March 19th

It seems like we only just found out about Theme Park DS and here it is, shipping to stores everywhere this week. We're willing to bet that a few of you will be bending the stylus in the pursuit of your dream park by the weekend. But hey, if parks aren't your thing, there's a ton of games out this week. Helps to make up for some of the recent lackluster weeks, eh?

Custom Robo Arena keychain screwdriver

Nintendo has made it a point to package the games it sends out for review with a creative gift. Several gaming publications received their copies of Custom Robo Arena today, and were pleased to find their parcels padded with a relevant bonus: a branded keychain that transforms into a set of screwdrivers.

Custom Robo Arena
lets you customize futuristic robot frames and send them out to holographic arenas for tournament battles. You will be able to upgrade and combine parts for your robot gladiators just like in the original GameCube game. That's where the handy screwdriver comes in!

Custom Robo Arena
hits stores early next week, so expect to see reviews for the game soon.

Custom Robo Arena goes gold

Nintendo sent us a press release today, informing that Custom Robo Arena has gone gold and is on track to meet its expected release date of March 19th in the United States. Nintendo is quick to point out that in this future of theirs, all disputes are settled via robots fighting on holographic battlefields, reminding us that we have a long ways to go before achieving this Utopian society of theirs. Not only that, but the Wi-Fi Connect possibilities make us anxious to get our hands on this game for some Game Night action.

Custom Robo Arena website launches

The official website for Custom Robo Arena has gone live, featuring screenshots, video and some downloadable wallpapers. Other than that, there isn't really much else to the site. The video, however, is fairly long and depicts a lot of the combat and customization promised by the Wi-Fi Connect compatible title. Personally, we can't wait for the game as it's almost sure to be added to our Game Night games roster.
