DS Daily: Did you ever doubt the DS?

When Nintendo first unveiled our portable friend back in the uncertain days of January 2004, the internet reaction bordered on hysterical -- flabbers everywhere were well and truly gasted. Two screens, one a touchscreen? On a handheld? Had Nintendo finally gone ever so slightly mad?

Well, no, they hadn't. Turns out, we needn't have worried. Yesterday, we learned that the twenty millionth DS had just sold in Japan, while it continues to mercilessly stomp all over the competition everywhere else. But that happy news got us thinking, back to that first announcement. We'll I'll be honest (it wouldn't be fair to suggest the entire team feels the same way) -- I had my doubts. I thought Nintendo had gambled a little too much. I was proven delightfully wrong.

But what about you? Honestly now: did you ever think Nintendo had dreamt up a great big, steaming pile of fail when it unveiled the DS? You can tell us. We're all friends here.

DS Daily: About a box

When shopping for games, how much do you depend on the boxart? We're sure you also read reviews and check out a synopsis or two, but we have to admit that sometimes, a crappy box can turn us off a game if we weren't fully invested in the first place. Sure, maybe it seems a little superficial -- maybe it is a little superficial -- but the box is, after all, among our first physical interactions with many games. It does make an impression.

We've included the Brain Buster Puzzle Pack here as an example, as it's quite pixelated and rough up close, but as far as puzzles go, it's so worth it. Sometimes, it's rewarding to take a chance!

Ten reasons to upgrade to a Lite

Are you still waffling over whether or not you should hug your big ol' original DS goodbye and pick up a DS Lite? We know some of you are still clinging to the old ways, but never fear -- we're here to help! This week, we're going to look at ten reasons to make the switch ... and ten reasons to stick with what you've got. Oh, we never said we'd make the decision easy.

Of course, the minute we convince you, Nintendo's apt to completely redesign the hardware all over again! But don't worry -- you'll be armed with a list of reasons to wait on anything new ... at least, until we decide to start convincing you to upgrade again. It's the circle of Nintenfandom; you know you're used to it by now.

GDC '07: Square Enix demos game-development game [Update 1]

[Update: Gamasutra reports that the presenter was Ichiro Otobe, and that Tadashi Tsushima is leading the project. Also, and this is the best part, rather than designing it from the outset as an internal-only project, SE has yet to decide whether or not to release this to the public when it's finished. So there's a chance!]

One of our loyal readers is at the GDC Serious Games Summit, where he sat in on a Square Enix presentation about their "serious game" for the DS, called Project GB, used to teach game design. The game was developed by a small team, and allows "players" to first mod a Space Invaders-type shooter, then develop their own simple games that can then be shared with other players over the internet. Presenter Tadashi Tsushima Ichiro Otobe indicated that this had a negative effect on productivity.

We all need to get jobs at Square Enix so we can play this thing. It sounds absolutely amazing. Famitsu has some washed-out pictures of the game. Check the link if you'd like to go squint at them.

[Thanks, Jason!]
