DS Fanboy Review: Spitfire Heroes: Tales of the Royal Air Force

Big John Games' Spitfire Heroes: Tales of the Royal Air Force is a simple game -- and I mean that in a good way. I'm not saying it's an easy game (far from it) or that there isn't enough to do. Spitfire Heroes is simple in the way that arcade games are: the controls are intuitive and easy to pick up quickly, and the objectives are clear. Despite its appearance as a flight sim (one of the most complex genres of all), Spitfire Heroes is an action game through and through, more After Burner than Microsoft Flight Simulator.

Unfortunately, some fairly major issues prevent Spitfire Heroes from an unqualified recommendation. Right up front: the game is too hard, which may prevent you from seeing the majority of the content. While it's easy to understand how to play, it is remarkably difficult to play.

Spitfire Heroes aims high, embodies other airplane cliches

We haven't covered Destineer's Spitfire Heroes: Tales of the Royal Air Force much, except to note that it came out last week. The game is kind of a surprise to us now, because this trailer actually looks pretty neat. The environments are a bit spare, but that's pretty much what happens when a game takes place almost entirely above the ocean.

In terms of gameplay, Heroes looks like a fast-paced, arcade airplane game like the vaunted After Burner -- with a little throttle control on the touchscreen, which is fun. We can only tolerate flying games when they're arcadey like this -- we don't want to take a class to play a flight simulator.

Pokemon defeats fear of flying, gains 20 EXP

Today's Pokémon content is a sweet story of how GayGamer's Pirate Prince came to understand the appeal of the series while in desperate need of a distraction. During a long flight, he decided to play some Pearl, despite not having been much of a fan previously.

It turns out that the game was an excellent distraction. In a situation where he was forced to choose between catching them all and paying attention to his claustrophobia and fear of flight, he was able to delve into the game and discover its merit.

We aren't especially scared of flying, which is a surprise considering all of the things we are afraid of, we also took a plane ride this weekend, also accompanied by our Pokemans. It really is nice to have collecting and leveling to obsess about instead of the stress of being on an airplane and the stress of travel in general.

A most excellent adventure through time

Konami's Time Ace is a 3D reimagining of their fossilized arcade game Time Pilot, in which players thwart a time-traveling madman who wants to enslave the past with futuristic weapons. The method used to accomplish this goal? Flying around in airplanes and shooting everything, obviously. Something doesn't seem right about going into the past and shooting up the landscape to prevent the changing of world events, but what do we know? We aren't time travologists.

There are 19 levels of time-travely, rail-shooty action, and a bunch of different planes from past, present and future. And speaking of flight in the past, this game doesn't use the touch screen for flight controls. That's an interesting decision.

Jet Impulse redeems DS flight sims

The selection of flight simulation games available for the Nintendo DS so far has not only been slim, but shameful. F-24: Stealth Fighter took the fun out of flying, Freedom Wings forced its autopilot mode on players, and Top Gun DS failed to even take off with fans of the original NES game.

Nintendo hoped to right the wrongs of these half-hearted, third-party attempts by releasing their own entry into the air combat genre: Jet Impulse (unfortunately titled DS Air in the US). Siliconera previewed the Japanese release and had nothing but praise for the import. The arcade-like flight sim manages to get the formula right with solid d-pad controls, addictive gameplay, and a number of small touches that add to the dogfighting atmosphere. Also, the anime cutscenes and downloadable content really separate Jet Impulse from its low-budget competition.

Provided that Jet Impulse doesn't require us to manually land on an aircraft carrier at the end of every mission, we'll definitely be looking out for the game's US release later this year.

Delta debuts airport download stations

In one of the best ideas we've seen in a while, Delta Airlines is partnering with Nintendo to bring DS download stations to the airport. What better time to test out a new title than a four hour flight? The new program is currently in place at the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, though we expect it will expand if successful. If your holiday flights include a stopover in Atlanta, try to patronize one of the stations at a Delta terminal -- this is one test program we want to support!

Currently, demos of Elite Beat Agents, Brain Age, and Clubhouse Games are available at the terminals in Atlanta.

Japanese enjoy in-flight DS action

Japan International Flights (JAL) recently announced a promotion where in-flight-modified DS Lites would be available for use to passengers who choose to fly with the company during the period of June 1st - August 31st of this year. Only 4 games are available at the moment, such as Mario Kart DS and DS Golf.

Now, I'm no scientist, but I'm pretty sure that us Americans fly more than anyone else. So why not introduce this kind of promotion over here in the states? Imagine Business Class travelers being handed a DS Lite with Brain Age upon taking their seat! Isn't that the type of person that Nintendo is trying to get the DS into the hands of?
