GameStop importing a pair of DS games

Looks like GameStop is getting into the importing business, slowly placing their toes into the water and testing the temperature with two different DS titles. These titles, which are great choices, are Jump Superstars and Naruto: Saikyo Ninja Daikesshu 4. News of this comes from GameSpot UK, so we're assuming this is only going to be available to UK consumers for the time being, with a possible test run in the US coming later, as well.

With importing being more of a diehard fan practice, could GameStop realistically expect this to take off with the average consumer? Will the language barrier be too much to overcome with shoppers? Besides, with several different online retailers, why would anyone even want to go to GameStop for imports?

Metareview: Star Fox Command

One of the highest-profile Wi-Fi titles of the year has finally released and the critics were quick to offer up their opinions. Generally, the game has seen a fair amount of praise, however critics have mentioned that the title's multiplayer is not exactly on par with the game's single-player experience.

The scores are as follows:

  • IGN - 80%: "It's at the very least a great start to the franchise. Bump up the difficulty, add some variety to the missions, bring back the forced-scrolling on-rails levels and the wingman-in-danger elements in a sequel and you'll have yourself the ultimate Star Fox adventure."
  • Gamespot - 75%: "Star Fox Command has great controls and introduces a strategic layer that's fairly interesting. However, the random feel of the story battles and the frantic multiplayer mode don't make the most of this game's solid foundation, which might cause nostalgic fans to long for the series' good old days."
  • 1UP - 70%: " None of the strategy elements that comprised the core of the single-player game are in multiplayer -- how cool would it have been to battle for strategic positions and race to key items on the overhead map against friends? How loudly does this game scream for a custom map editor? Should Command see a sequel, competitive strategic multiplayer ought to be a big part of it."
We've heard from the critics, now how about the readers?

DS Lite engineers comment on their design

Gamespot condenses an interview run in the April edition of Nintendo's Japanese online magazine in which Kazuo Yoneyama and Tomoyuki Sakiyama comment on their choices that came to be the DS Lite we know today. Kazuo, a seasoned vet with the company, got his beginnings designing Donkey Kong arcade machines with Shigeru Miyamoto. Tomoyuki, who hasn't been with the company long, has contributions in the GBA Micro and original DS.

The interview sheds some light on the design decisions that combined to create the DS Lite, with each explaining the reasoning behind weight and the new screens. The two speak of how the DS Lite's top screen needed to be sturdier, yet fit in the overal smaller package the team was aiming for and when no pre-existing piece of hardware met their criteria, they partnered with a LCD manufacturer and went into test mode, putting several variations of the top screen through a rigorous testing regimen. The final outcome, which some of you already know, is one brilliant piece of technology.
