The latest and greatest from FFXII: Revenant Wings

Game Trailers recently put up not one, but two fresh new gameplay trailers for FFXII: Revenant Wings, and if you're interested in this game, you don't want to miss them. If you're not interested in this game ... well, we don't like to talk about real tragedies like that.

Which one has you more excited: Revenant Wings or Ring of Fates? While you ponder that, check out the pair of trailers after the jump.

Fresh hot Revenant Wings trailer hits Japanese site

The Japanese website for Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings has unleashed a new trailer and, as you all know, we're huge Final Fantasy junkies here at The Fanboy. To access the trailer, you'll want to enter the site and head through the downloads section and click the third trailer. Upon it opening, you'll be greeted with footage that demonstrated the Active Force Battle in the game, showing you sprites duke it out in real time. The battle system looks amazing and only strengthens our desire for this game.

What about you?

Shiva makes Revenant Wings a family affair

Jeux France is reporting a juicy rumor about espers in FFXII: Revenant Wings. Not only is Shiva rumored to be included, but the super hot (cold?) ice goddess is bringing along a few members of her family. Apparently, there will be others, like a male version (Shiva's husband), and a young female child Shiva. We're not sure what role these might play, but it definitely makes for an interesting rumor. Jeux France expects confirmation (or negation) soon.

If this is true, we just hope that Little Shiva finds a few more scraps of clothing, or it may change the game just a little, and we'll be facing another one of these situations.

Another limited edition DS: FFXII

Looks like someone decided that they needed to move a few more DS Lites in Japan, since sales have been flagging. The poor handheld has really struggled to gain a foothold. Sigh. Maybe this spankin' new limited edition DS Lite will do the trick. We do hear that this Final Fantasy series is a little on the popular side.

Seriously, this new FFXII: Revenant Wings DS Lite (aka the Sky Pirates edition) is pretty slick, though a little understated, as you can see after the jump. Who wants to start betting on whether or not this will beat those crazy early sales for Final Fantasy III?

Revenant Wings site updates

The official Japanese website for Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings has been live for a bit on the series of tubes that make up the internet. Now, through this wondrous website, one may access a nice little trailer on the main page, as well as some cool downloads.

The downloads include desktop wallpapers and a promotional video from Jump Festa 2007. Other things, such as the game's prologue and character descriptions, are in Japanese and able to stand up to our most deadly translation bots.

Revenant Wings media explosion

All sorts of assets in the form of screens and concept art have popped up over at IT Media for the highly-anticipated Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings. With several shots taken from in-game, as well as the concept art, we find ourselves honestly frightened. Not frightened at the prospect of where the game is going, mind you, but scared that this is the new cactuar design. It very well could not be, since Google translation isn't always accurate, however it's enough to cause us concern.

Check out the rest of what you're looking for here.

FFXII: Revenant Wings action shots

While we've seen some gameplay screens before from FFXII: Revenant Wings, some of these are at least bigger, if not better. High quality shots seem to be hard to come by, but Japanese print magazines have been the biggest resource thus far on this game. Once you accept a little graininess, however, these look pretty great. Check 'em out after the jump!

Hot off the press: FFXII: Revenant Wings scans

A pair of pages featuring Final Fantasy XII from Famitsu magazine have been scanned and shot through the vast series of tubes that comprise the internet, eventually arriving on our digital doorstep. We now present said scans to you in an act of surrender kindness we hope will be valued. You're good people and deserve good scans. We'd include the scans past the post break, but they're fairly huge and would break the site's tables. Also, we'd translate the info, but our inability to translate Japanese script makes that impossible.

Anyone want to take a stab at it?

Treasure trove of Revenant Wings images

German site GameFront has apparently been pillaging all the Revenant Wings images they could get their hands on, for they've collected a veritable trove of shots, from gameplay screens to mind-blowing concept art. We've hidden a few behind the jump, but definitely check out the source, too -- there's so many images, it'll bring a tear to your eye.

And with the screens come the new details. We've already heard that the battle system for FFXII: Revenant Wings will be a simplified version of that in FFXII proper, with specialized stylus functionality -- now we see it in (still) action. Now we also know there is no battle screen -- all fights take place in real time, and the player uses the stylus to position characters for battle. Sounds like a lot for the DS to handle, and we can't wait to see it in action.

Check out a few more shots from Vaan and Penelo's upcoming adventure after the jump.

Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings updates

Just in time for the US release of Final Fantasy XII, updates for the spin-off have surfaced. Co-producer Eisuke Yokoyama and scenario writer/director Motomu Toriyama talked a bit with Dengeki DS Style magazine about the battle system, characters, summons and the world of Ivalice. Here are a few snippets from the IGN article:

  • Asked if the game would use FFXII's ADB system, Yokoyama said that the battle system is mostly new. However, in order to keep FFXII players from getting confused, there will be a number of shared elements. The Gambit system will be a part of this title, although it will be simplified in order to accommodate beginner players. Also, the battle system will be fully playable with the stylus.
  • Dengeki asked a question about the number of party members capable of joining your group. To this, Yokoyama responded that Fran and Balthier will definitely join in as party members (they were shown in the Tokyo Game Show trailer, after all). Due to the new game systems, Yokoyama expects there to be more party members than in FFXII.
  • Summon beasts will apparently play a big role in the game. Toriyama expects Revenant Wings to have the most summon beasts of any Final Fantasy game ever. The summon beasts will be the key to battles, said Toriyama, and their use will be different from that of previous titles.

As more and more details appear, the eager question of Wi-Fi support sticks in our mind. There hasn't been any word involving Wi-Fi and Revenant Wings but we hope to hear some in the future. With the game taking advantage of every other aspect the Nintendo DS has to offer it would be a shame to see a key element get left out in the cold.

FFXII Revenant Wings updates

Final Fantasy XII is inches away from its US release and the news about the DS spin off is everywhere. Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings was recently announced and fans of the series can't get enough. What started as a rumor has spread like wildfire, capturing every RPG lover's attention.

Here is what we know about the game so far:

  • Takes place years after the events of Final Fantasy XII
  • Stars two main characters Vaan and his lady friend Penelo
  • Vaan has achieved his dream of being a sky pirate (who will never beat ninjas) and has his own ship which Penelo operates
  • The pair are on a quest to reach the island in the sky, Poolbama (temp title), to grasp the treasure of Grevados

How the game will play is still up in the air but we hope to see a ton of air combat. If you are still in the dark about FFXII Revenant Wings, check out the trailer. We hope to hear more about this game soon and as always, we'll keep you updated.

FFIII creators talk other remakes on DS

During the pandemonium that was the Tokyo Game Show, Games Radar managed to get an interview with two head honchos on the Final Fantasy III project. In speaking with Hiromichi Tanaka, Senior Vice President of Software Development and Tomoya Asano, Producer, it's revealed that due to the already insane success from the game's launch in Japan, Square-Enix is looking to adopt a strategy of just outright remaking classic Final Fantasy titles, as opposed to just porting them as they did with Final Fantasy IV, V, and VI.

So with ports to the GBA, remakes hitting the DS, as well as brand-new spin-off games, Square-Enix is staking a mighty large claim on the DS. We couldn't be happier, to tell the truth.

FFXII Revenant Wings site open

We knew that the Force was with us today when we randomly did a search on "Square-Enix Japan." Not only did the search remind us that we lack the correct language skills to read what was going on, we found that the Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings site is up and running.

For a second we stared in awe at the opening animation then hurriedly tried to understand what was being said and shown. Once again, our attempts were thwarted.

We really need to start those Japanese classes ....
