Guitar Hero DS bundle is almost perfect

We love our two-tone DSes around these parts, and the model that will ship as part of the Guitar Hero: On Tour bundle is especially delicious. Frankly, silver and black will always be a winning combination. It's a color scheme that cannot fail to look classy and sleek.

Alas, whoever designed this model didn't stop at just silver and black, but also decided to slap that ugly transfer onto the DS's upper lid. We appreciate some Guitar Hero branding was probably required for this, but couldn't it have been a little ... subtler? For those of you who are fans, Toys "R" Us currently has this down for a June 29th release on its site, one week after the game itself hits shelves.

Silver DS Lite, now with less ... silver

We often poke fun at custom Lites (usually with good reason, but sometimes, just because), but this one actually looks alright. The new Gloss Silver DS Lites are pretty, but a little plain; the buttons are also silver, so the whole thing is very monochromatic. The original Phat was also silver, but had black buttons to shake things up a little. Maybe we like variety, or maybe we're just nostalgic for the good ol' days of less battery power, but this Lite Redux that turned up on eBay really seems like the best of both worlds. It's got the sleek, slender sophistication of the silver Lite, but the black buttons just scream "old school." The price ($175) may be a little high for our tastes, but hey -- we're on board with the idea.

Nintendo of Europe promotes their product to Brits and jealous bloggers

Before you guys in the U.S. (like us) get too excited, by "here", the ad means "the U.K." Nintendo sent out these e-mail advertisements for the new, shiny Metallic Silver DS Lite, reminding European shiny-stuff fans that their DS has arrived. "Effortlessly stylish," the ad copy reads, "the DS Lite Silver is just one more good reason to join the 14 million other people across Europe who have already got their hands on a Nintendo DS."

Depending on your geographical location, your current DS Lite ownership status, and your color preferences, this email could be a welcome blip in your inbox. But we have to wonder-- who that isn't already enough of a Nintendo fan to possess a DS would be on their mailing list? The ad copy sounds like it's aimed at new DS gamers and not upgraders.

Check after the break for the whole ad image.

Gloss Silver and Metallic Pink DS Lites now available for import

The new DS Lites have been released in Japan and have shown up on import shopping sites. That's right, for only $179 + shipping, you can have a DS Lite in one of the two new Japan-exclusive colors! You have your choice of Like the Regular DS Phat Color but on a Lite, or Like the Pink One but Shinier.

Sure, you pay a premium, but it may be worth it to have a DS that looks somewhat different from other DS's in the immediate area. Depends on how you feel about the new colors! What do you think-- Gloss Silver or Gross Silver? Metallic Pink or Me-tacky Pink?

It's a Wonderful DS Lite

Square Enix's Wonderful World edition DS Lite marks the first of what we're sure will be many Gloss Silver bundles to grace Japan, but will never -- absolutely never -- see an official release in the states. Set for release along with the game this June 27th, the limited edition handheld shows of the "It's a Wonderful World" logo and Tetsuya Nomura's skull badge design. Pricing for the set hasn't been announced yet, but expect to pay a king's ransom if you plan on importing.

Suda surprise: The Silver Case will be localized

Back at GDC, Grasshopper Manufacture's Suda 51 announced that his Playstation text adventure The Silver Case and its cellphone sequel were getting ported to the DS. We tempered our interest in this development with doubt that the games would be released outside of Japan, due to their limited appeal and the large amount of text involved.

Sometimes, we don't mind being wrong. During the Australian G03 event, Suda announced that the game, which was "a minor hit" in Japan, would receive a worldwide release. Now we should all buy it and let him know he made the right decision!

GDC07: Classic Suda 51 weirdness hitting the DS

Suda 51's first games as part of Grasshopper Manufacture are being remade for the DS. The games, called The Silver Case and The Silver Case Ward 25, were originally released for the Playstation and mobile phones, respectively. Suda revealed this fact during his GDC keynote "Punk's Not Dead".

Both are graphical text adventures; Ward 25 uses static art and the original Silver Case uses full-motion video. Unfortunately, because of the amount of text that would have to be translated, Suda isn't sure the remakes will be released outside Japan. Someone tell him that American DS players love graphical text adventures! And tell him that we <3 Grasshopper Manufacture too.
