ELSPA: Not all of us are pirates after all

Apparently the outrageous claim from the ELSPA's Intellectual Property Crime Unit manager, John Hillier, that 90% of North American DS owners are pirates, was outrageous to him as well. A spokesperson for the organization told GamesIndustry.biz that the quote attributed to him in the incendiary Sunday Post article was inaccurate or even fabricated.

According to the spokesperson, "[John] didn't quote The Sunday Post on any figures whatsoever." The spokesperson asserted that the Sunday Post conflated quotes from Hillier about R4 sales in the UK with an article from Singapore about DS piracy in that country (hence the 90% quote, which is still likely to be ridiculous). The specific article isn't named, but we believe it's this one. It's amazing that a quote about the UK plus an article about Singapore somehow generated a statistic about North America. But who cares about facts when you're busy alarming the public?

Ouendan cosplay skit is unashamedly insane, and all the better for it

With its outlandish (yet easily portrayable) cast and one of the most compelling soundtracks in gaming, we're not surprised that cosplayers are so drawn to Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan. In the video above, a highly enthusiastic crowd is treated to a performance by the Singapore-based "Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan Cosplay Group" at the annual EOY '07 Event at Singapore Expo. If only the same amount of effort was ploughed into all cosplay performances.

A warning before you hit play, however: as this is the last song from the second Ouendan game, consider this to be spoileriffic.

Flash card latest: ESA and the Singapore police get their raid on

Bad dudes who pirate, watch out! The ESA just combined forces with the Singapore police force to raid several local stores that were selling DS flash cards, devices that let users download and play pirated games (but also, it should be noted, perfectly legal homebrew applications), and that are illegal under the Singapore Copyright Act. The haul, while not massive (200 devices worth around $5,800 were confiscated), was still big enough for the ESA to submit a press release, in which it warned more raids would take place should the piracy continue.

You may recall how a series of similar raids was carried out in France recently -- looks like the authorities are beginning to really squeeze the pirates where it hurts.

Singapore Airlines passengers get emulated GBC games

While riding the friendly skies with Singapore Airlines, one of the crew over at Siliconera found themselves in for a treat. Well, kind of. See, the airline offers emulated Game Boy Color games for use during your flight, to help you stab that foul beast called boredom directly in its disgusting, black heart. While a nice gesture, it turns out the emulation software has some issues.

First of all, there are only two categories of play: Pokemon and Adventure. Also, the titles under the Adventure category suffer from choppy frame rates and overall sluggish play. As far as the Pokemon games go, there is no save feature, hardly making an effort to actually progress in the game a meaningless one.

Other flights, however, featured different titles. Some flights featured The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages and Wario Land 3. Others even had Picross 2. All in all, seems like a good idea executed somewhat poorly.

Dropcast: The first made-in-Singapore game for the DS

When we last heard from Mikoishi Studio (Phoenix Wright cell phone port), the Singapore-based developer was putting together an unnamed MMO for the DS. We're not sure if those ambitious plans have since been abandoned, but the company has just announced that another of its DS titles will be shipping to Japan by year's end, eventually making its way to North America and Europe early 2008.

Dropcast, a puzzler with a cartoonish/gothic theme from the looks of its artwork so far, will support four-player local competitions with a single card, as well as four-player matches online. Gamers will have three multiplayer battle modes and four single-player modes to choose from. So far, Mikoishi hasn't revealed much about Dropcast's actual mechanics, save two details:
  1. "In the solo mode, Dropcast players have to race to remove squares and shapes before they fill the screen."
  2. "In multiplayer mode, a player taps two or more squares of the same color to 'send' them to flood the screen of his opponent."
Truth be told, we always find ourselves enamored with these quirky titles put together by smaller studios, more so than with most other big-budget releases. Some days, when we're stuck reporting on ridiculously pointless items like Pokemon headphones, these games are the only things keeping us from ending it all.
