Akira Toriyama wrote a letter on DQIX

Akira Toriyama, the lead character designer for Dragon Quest, as well as the creator of Dragon Ball, recently sent out a letter commenting on the announcement that Dragon Quest IX would be on the DS. The letter (pictured after the jump), tells of Toriyama's surprise at the announcement, as well as his new-found enthusiasm to get cracking on the franchise again, which he had become bored with recently.

Translation, provided by the awesome folks posting over at NeoGAF, as well as a picture of the letter is available after the jump.

Congratulations on the announcement of Dragon Quest IX!

So the next Dragon Quest is coming to the DS! That was a surprise to me. Surprised you too, right?

But this is really good news to me. I had gradually been losing my enthusiasm, but this makes me feel as if we'll be able to make a bit of a return to the good old days. "Wow!" I thought, "Horii's the man! He's really done it!"

This may just be the nostalgic ramblings of an old man, but back then I really enjoyed making concept art for games. I feel I can proudly say "now those were games!" This time I want to absolutely give it my all to produce fun, simple and impactful new designs.

I'm getting on in my years, but for just a little bit longer, I'm going to give it my best!

Expect big things!

1. Akira Toriyama's the man.

Personally, I love the idea of Dragon Quest IX coming to the DS. RPGs anywhere? I'm sold.

2. hmm, apparently Square Enix is really warming up to Nintendo (or at least the Enix side, the Square side seems fairly noncommittal, to anyone)

Now just put Dragon Quest IX on the Wii, and it will conquer Japan

Come on Square Enix, you can do it!

3. I think putting DQIX would make a whole lot more sense on the Wii than on the DS.

That being said, I'm still buying it for DS.
