Friday Video: Bloodletting and cockroaches

While everyone else in the room was bemoaning the presence of cockroaches in this chilling new trailer for Dementium: The Ward, this blogger was simply stunned by the music. The last thing we expected to hear was Concrete Blonde's "Bloodletting" from the album of the same name, and yet it was strangely fitting despite the lack of singer Johnette Napolitano's amazing vocals. It's quite a slick little trailer; while light on the gameplay footage (which is okay! we've seen it), the video is heavy on mood, and we think it will definitely get you excited about spending time in The Ward.

And we ain't lying when we tell you that it's a pretty creepy trailer -- definitely a step up on the perversity scale for DS games. See for yourself after the break.

1. Just how much of a captious malcontent does someone have to be to find a quarter-second clip of a skittering cockroach off-putting enough to be immediately blinded to the overwhelming amount of awesome material in that trailer?

If there end up being actual cockroaches in the game, I can guarantee here and now that they will be the BEST video game cockroaches since Animal Crossing.

2. Remember the Orkin commercials. They had a roach look like it were crawling on the TV. Some people actually threw their shoe and broke their TVs and sued Orkin. There might be a correlation somewhere there but I'm too bear dog gone tired to bare it.

3. So umm...
Are the non-gameplay parts of this trailer related to the story? In game fmv? I'm confused...

4. The Orkin commercial had a cockroach that was depicted at actual cockroach size--this cockroach takes up a far larger portion of the screen. Watching it on, for instance, a 32 inch television screen would probably yield an insect roughly the size of a small puppy, and if you're still so excitable that you smash the television screen in a fit of terror, your lawsuit isn't going to hold up in court.

I was under the impression that the gaming press corps simply found the addition of cockroaches cliche or cheesy--I have no knowledge of the common conventions of the horror game genre. You're probably right, though.

5. I'm wondering as well, Kefka. Maybe it's backstory? I'll tell you one thing -- I'm really curious now!

6. While I think the music sounds awesome, and I can appreciate the content in the trailer (even though it's not really my cup of tea), I have to admit, the cockroach scene is a bit cliche' and over the top. It's trying to raise the "eww" factor for no real reason, other than to prey on the fact that cock roaches generally lend to feelings of disgust and horror, which is obviously what the game is depicting. Great trailer, nix the roaches, not because they're grosse, but because they're not necessary.
