We all know how
nutty for the DS Lite Japan has been in the past, it would appear that Nintendo is finally starting to quench consumers' thirst in the region. As the new crimson/black DS Lite
released to Japan last week, it appears that it failed to sell out at retail, a feat accomplished by many of its
predecessors. Of course, this leads us to one question: is Nintendo finally catching up with the Japanese demand or is the crimson/black DS Lite just not appealing to consumers in the region?

I would love to score a new Crimson DS! But my current Polar White DS is still in excellent shape which makes it hard to pony up the cash for a 2nd DS Lite based on color only.

I must be the only person outside of Japan that thinks this thing is hideous and tacky. IT IS.

I bet it's because of appearance. I mean, the crimson/black DS is cool and all, it's just not as appealing as what is available in Japan.

@2: No, I'll agree with you and thereby double the number of non-Japanese who don't like it. I've been turned off to dual-color systems since that hideous Peas & Carrots GBA SP, and this one is almost just as bad.

Back in the Target ad thread, Rooster posted a comment and link about how the screens aren't as good in the crimson black. I was suspicious at first, but I have truly seen, or rather NOT seen the light.
The screens on the crimson black DS Lite are HORRIBLE compared to that of the polar white & onyx ones. (don't know about the pink).
That'd be my guess.

The Crimson and Black ds looks horrible, like some bastard child of a red ds and a black ds.

Well, so many more color options/special editions are available in Japan, so, I'm sure a new color isn't as big of a deal there as it is here.

my friend bought one...I thought it would have been hideous..and its still not (pretty) but it looks alright (black matte & metallic red)
still the PSP remake seems to be a new Hit phenomenon in Japan...at least for the time being...maybe the mass culture moved on to something new? -(not bashing DS, but perhaps they just had too much of it)
-time for crazy conspiracy theories

Doesn't every person and their pets in Japan have at least 2 DS's by now?

The new DSs, including the crimson/black one, have crappy screens. That's enough reason to not buy them.

So, you're saying that the actual screen of the DS lite Crimson/Black isn't good? Cause I was thinking of ordering one online...Also, do you know if all the black versions are the same? Cause I hear the European one(that's where I am) is a fingerprint magnet...

Most of the new DS lites seem to have the off-white (read yellow) bottom screens. Explained by Nintendo as being a side effect of the touch screen (which doesn't make sense when that wasn't an issue with the DS phats.) Now the Crimson and Onyx DS lites have washed out looking screens. Not sure if that also includes the yellow as well on the bottom. Bottom line the DS phats have the best looking screens, yet they're no longer in production.

I see. So basically, all lites have "crappy" screens. Strange that I haven't seen mention of this anywhere else...

Hmm, I bought the Brain Age 2 Bundle, (upgraded from a phat) and the brightness and smaller d-pad was the only thing I didn't get used to. I was very afraid of getting a bad screen, but mine seems just fine. I also wrote a letter to Nintendo asking if the screens were different (not that they'd fess up to me about any wrong doing) but they replied this:
"Hello and thank you for contacting Nintendo,
According to my sources, the Crimson/Onyx DS Lite LCD screens have the
same quality as previous DS Lite systems. For more information about
our products, be sure to check our website at www.nintendo.com.
Sincerely,
Nintendo of America Inc.
Dervin Camden"
So, who knows.

I have the Crimson/black one. Works perfect, just the same as my brothers Onyx DS Lite. I even did screen tests.. looks exactly the same to me. As for the dual color schem.. why exactly does it matter? I, for one, think it looks sexy.

It's not appealing to the Japanese. =/ I live in Japan and I've asked a few people how they like it, and most people replied it's because of the colour. They seem to like the solid colours, and the ones not in America. XD Personally, I hate how the Crimson and Black DS looks, just not an appealing combo to me.

I can see how the colours wouldn't be appealing over there compared to what they have; it just doesn't fit in with the style of the time, which is nowhere near that pointlessly brash. The Japanese, though bold in some aspects of art and fashion, are then *artfully* bold. These colours just look heavy.
I don't know about the screens. I haven't heard of any screen problems, and the DS Lite I got at release has suffered only from the (meaningless) hinge crack. The screens are gorgeous and responsive.

Red is color of good and positive. Black - of evil and negative.
It looks to us nice - but to Asians it is something really weird.
