Over the past few months, we've all grown used to digesting statistics and factoids that sum up the DS's dominance in Japan. That's not to say we've grown tired of them, however, so here's another pretty sweet stat: over the holiday period, the DS whooshed effortlessly past the lifetime sales of Sony's PlayStation 2.
That's according to Japanese sales tracker Media Create, which got its abacus out to calculate that the DS has now shifted 20,954,157 units, compared to 20,901,468 PS2s. What's even more impressive is how quickly Nintendo's handheld has pulled off the feat -- let's not forget that Sony's console has been on the Japanese market for an extra four and a half years. A hearty "Congrats!" to you, Nintendo.

Wait, isn't the PS2's total lifetime sales like 100 million? So 4 times as many PS2s sold outside of japan as in it? And Japan's still the primary market?

I think you answered your own question. If a country the size of california sells 1/4th of the aggregate..

There is a simple reason why Rockstar and others don't develop games for the DS: it just isn't powerful enough. That's not to say it's not good... it's just aimed at a different demographic, and it works well with 2d games, which is something Rockstar doesn't really do anymore.

It was only a matter of time until the Game Boy killer was created. Who knew it would be Nintendo's?

DS isn't powerful enough to do the same thing as a more powerful system, but its plenty powerful to make beautiful and immersive worlds. Those devs are the ones creating the image that the DS is for a 'certain demographic' by refusing to release their types of material on it. Does anybody remember a DS game that came out on Halloween that erases the notion that the DS targets a certain demographic?

You can't compare a hand held to a console. The PS2 was $299 when it first came out and stayed at that price for a while. The DS on the other hand debuted at $129 which is a way more affordable price point for many than $299 is.

I agree entirely. This is an apples and oranges comparison. Sure, it is still impressive, but show me a non-handheld console over take the PS2's lifetime sales and then that is when it'll be truly impressive. Something tells me that'll never happen.
