I've never played Pokemon before, how does Platinum relate to Pearl and Diamond? Does it introduce new monsters (in the same story world) or does it combine all the monsters you find in Pearl & Diamond? Thanks!

Yeah, it basically takes the 5 pokemon you can't get in 1 game or the other and puts them together. Also, I presume it'll let you get both Dialga and Palkia (Legendary pokemon). You're welcome.

3rd version brings improvements, extends existing features and slightly changes story.
For example In Pokemon Ruby&Sapphire Team Magma tries to awaken Groudon and Aqua. On Ruby Aqua succeeds and you have to use Groudon to defeat Aqua. On Sapphire Magma succeeds and you use Kyorge to stop them. Finally on third version (like platinum) they both succeed and you Use Rayquazza to stop them both.

Well, Pokemon Platinum will be like
RUBY/SAPHIRE ---------Emerald
Ruby - Groudon and rayquasa
Saphire- Kyogre and rayquasa
You can only get rayquasa after pokeleauge on this...
Emerald --- Rayquasa MAIN ONE and you can get Kyogre and Groudon
Now substitute Ruby Saphire Diamond Pearl
And Ground Kyogre Dialga Palkia
And Giratina for Rayquasa
That makes really envious!
