So, apparently the game isn't getting a visual overhaul in the slightest, as, should our memory serve us correct, the images in the scan to the right look exactly like the original SNES title. Hey, we're not complaining! Who has any right to complain about
Chrono Trigger getting re-released for the DS? Nobody, that's who!
Seriously, we're so stoked for this game, we doubt any other happening could ever rival it. Actually, if Abraham Lincoln and George Washington rose out of their graves to take part in a zombie steel-cage match, it would probably rival
Chrono Trigger. But,
Chrono would still win.
See how crazy this game is making us?

It's okay. It's making me crazy too. Yesterday's news was by far the most amazing gaming news I've heard thus far this year.

Man, last year all I could hope for was Dragon Quest IX. Since then, they have released FFT:A2, announced remakes for Final Fantasy IV, DQ IV, V, and VI, and now Chrono Cross... *sigh*. I'm still waiting for DQ IX, but man, this is a lot of RPGs...

I'm sure I'm the minority here, but I'd kind of enjoy some graphics updates... I mean a straight port is no better than a ROM. An added dungeon is cool, but some graphics updates would make me really excited. Just my $.02.

I agree, zero. With everyone falling all over themselves proclaiming this as the second coming, you'd think it'd be more than the original plus a dungeon.
Really goes to show you how people bandwagon on things.
Now, if they were to port Xenogears....

If memory serves, CT had some of the best pixel art of the 16 bit generation. It's not that I wouldn't also appreciate a 3d overhaul, it's just that I doubt they would be able to do it justice without pouring a ton of resources into it.
Which brings me to point #2: if it only receives minor updates, it better not cost more than $30.

See, now, I think it really goes to show you how much people love Chrono Trigger. Even without a graphical update, gamers are clamoring for this port. A testament to the quality of the game.

Hmm... Interesting idea there. "Zombie Presidential Steel-caged Death Match DS". Almost sounds as good as "Little Red Riding Hood's Zombie BBQ"

These images are from a Japanese magazine that carried yesterday's announcement, but I can't find any confirmation that they're from the remake. It could be that the magazine just tossed in some screen shots of the original game since no official screens of the remake are out yet.

Too bad this wasn't done a couple years ago for the GBA. That would be more appropriate and wouldn't require these tacked-on touchscreen features to make it seem worthy of a DS port. And are they not even improving the quality of the audio?
I hope Square doesn't try to charge $40 for this lazy port like they do for their FF games.

I just wonder if it'll include the cutscenes from the PS1 version. Tacked on touchscreen support can be nice for RPGs, if its kept to only being used to operate inventory and battle menus. A new dungeon will be nice, wonder where they'll put it. However, I've read in the past that the original Japanese version had much more dialog which would fill in some things better. I doubt they'll do it, but the feature of a new translation (only if it was an option, not mandatory) would be nice. A 3D mode would be interesting only if they kept the original 2D stuff as well, but they won't do that, we know this is only a port, so I'd be perfectly happy with the original 2D sprites.

Reissuing classics is never a bad thing. If you've got a game widely considered by many to be one of the best ever made, why mess with it by altering some fundamental gameplay or graphical functionality?
No one's forcing you to buy it. I'm looking forward to what will be my first playthrough. It's exciting just that it's going to be commercially available again. The chief difference between this and a ROM is that this is legitimate.

Ok, with that out of the way, you think they would be more then happy to give this series a face lift.....

Awsome , i think that a direct port would look better than a 3d remake anyway . FF3 looked like crap . Yea it was 3d , but that doesn't mean it looked better . FF4 is looking better , but i think for a super awsome game like this , sticking with the original look would be better than a messed up looking 3d look . Maybe they'll give it a bit of upscale , and smooth some things out while they wait for HQ to choose a release date , I can't imagine it taking more than say a month to port a game from the SNES to the DS . I'm not sure what's wrong with just a direct port , it's one of the best games ever , whatelse do you want , it's great that they are re-releasing it for younger generations who couldn't play the original .
IMO this is worth buying .
If they manage to release this within this month or early next month , I'll be buying it and taking it with me on my camping trip . ( 8 hour roadtrip to get there , it's a family traditoin so I have to go . )
Since my post is so long anyway , What is a DC charger , is it the same as a car charger ?(I'm buying one soon to keep my DS charged up for the trip.)

It's pretty simple really. Either is good.
I don't think you can really "improve" the graphics of the original. They're part of the style and feel of the game. Equally an updated version might be nice for a new experience. Both possibilities have their merits.

Not that I'm complaining, but I think if their gonna release this, they should at least update the graphics with new sprites (love me some 2d), backgrounds, effects, and the sound quality. Either way, I'm still buying.

Mhnn... I'm not that excited about a port if all there's new is an additional dungeon. If they'd do a new translation without cutting things out, that would make it a little more worth buying, but I really do think graphical improvement would have been awesome.
Does anyone remember how some guys wanted to make a 3D fanremake of the game? Until they got sued by Squeenix of course. :/ Search for "Chrono Resurrection" and you'll see some of the amazing stuff they did. So yeah, a direct port does not really make me excited.

Seriously, if theres no new dungeons what's so great for the long time fan? Play it on the move? Been doing that for months with my PSP.
If theres no new dungeosn or dialouge or ANYTHING new, what's the point in playing this for the umpteenth time?

I'm not dissapointed that the game looks like the snes version but I find it funny that Chrono Trigger even on the PS1 used the snes visuals and audio. I know they added video clips but the game remained the same. This time we get a new area to explore like with the GBA Final Fantasy remakes, which is cool. This game is a gem and maybe thats why they're avoiding changing too much but it would have been cool if they touched up the visuals but didn't use the NDS Final antasy III engine so it would remain 2d. Oh well, Chrono Trigger on the DS is something I've wanted for a long time so thanks S-E! Next...Final Fantasy VI please since IV is coming soon!
