Amazon places Guitar Hero: On Tour into the Gold Box

Amazon is running another Gold Box promotion, as it is want to do, and featured right now is Guitar Hero: On Tour. The entire bundle is being sold for the low price of $29.99, which is around $20 less than the MSRP. If you've been waiting to test out the portable Guitar Hero waters, this just might be your chance.

You can see the sale for yourself by clicking right here.

July NPD: Post-E3 mellow

Here's our theory for the overall drop in US sales in July versus June: just reading E3 coverage in the middle of the month was enough gaming excitement for a significant portion of the audience. Too crazy? Here's another one: people decided to reduce their spending now in anticipation of stuff coming later. And, for fun, one more: it was just too hot outside for video games. Who needs logic when you've got imagination?

It's easy enough to explain the DS's drop (which, we must point out, takes it from number one to number one): June saw the release of a huge new game and hardware bundle, sales of which were largest at launch. The rest: who knows? The top ten games are after the break.
  • DS: 608K175K (-22.35%)
  • Wii: 555K111K (-16.7%)
  • PS3: 224.9K 180.1K (-44.5%)
  • PSP: 221.7K 115.3K (-34.21%)
  • Xbox 360: 204.8K 15.2K (-6.91%)
  • PS2: 155.5K 33K (-17.6%)

The DS Life: Light the Way

Despite the title, this post has nothing to do with Prism: Light the Way, one of the DS's most interesting but overlooked puzzlers. Circuit City has the game on sale for $9.99 this week, though, so you should totally look into picking it up anyway!

For this week's edition of The DS Life, we'll look at several images taken from photographer Patrick Brosset's collection of light painting shots, long-exposure photos taken with streaks of light drawn over the scene. What does this creative technique have to do with the Nintendo DS or gaming? Join us past the break to find out!

Wal-Mart does 2 for $25 deal

The last time the retail giant did one of these deals, there wasn't much in the way of worthwhile titles in order to get some of you off the fence and spending. Perhaps the same can be said of the stock participating in this most recent deal, but we'd beg to differ. If you still haven't picked up Sonic Rush, then we suggest you nab that and one of these other included titles:
There are other games, such as some board game compilations, so we suggest you head over and check out the sale for yourself.

[Thanks, Feba!]

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sales

Not all of us are up to the challenge of a brutal roguelike, and that's okay. In fact, that's what roguelike-lights such as Pokémon Mystery Dungeon are for. Just because said games don't beat your spirit to a pulp, though, doesn't mean they're not enjoyable, especially for Pokémaniacs.

Today's a good time to become an explorer of time or darkness, as both Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Explorers of Darkness are being offered as Amazon's deal of the day. Each one is currently on sale for $22.99, and will be until 12:00am PDT. Yet, if you're not familiar with the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series, you might want to check out our review of the game (well, games) first.

Promotional Consideration: Circuit City savings with Cecil

This week's installment of Promotional Consideration comes with an excellent bonus -- a Circuit City deal for the Final Fantasy IV remake, which ships to stores next week. The electronics retailer is offering a $10 gift card with any purchase of the 3D RPG, on- and offline. Factor in free-shipping for orders totaling over $24, and this makes up for "the Square Enix tax," that extra $10 the publisher often adds to its DS games.

Now that we've done our part to sell the game to you, let's look at how Square Enix has been pushing Final Fantasy IV.

June NPD: Solid Snake farts in our general direction

June was the month of Sony, Sony, Sony ... and DS. With the PlayStation brand achieving positive results across the board (MGS4 undoubtedly being the reason for doubling May's PS3 figures), Microsoft picked up a small increase in sales for the Xbox 360. The DS performed spectacularly as always, and gained a massive jump in sales thanks to Guitar Hero: On Tour.

The only console on a downslide for the month was the Wii, yet it still trounced all non-Nintendo competition. It's like those guys at school who barely even tried and still got top marks, while everyone else studied their butts off to scrape by. Ah, the mysteries of life.
  • DS: 783K 368.2K (+ 88.7%)
  • Wii: 666.7K 47.5K (- 6.6%)
  • PS3: 405.5K 218.4K (+ 116.7%)
  • PSP: 337.4K 144.7K (+ 75%)
  • X360: 219.8K 31.8K (+ 16.9%)
  • PS2: 188.8K 64.4K (+ 51.7%)
Software sales are waiting for you after the break! YA RLY!

The Sale Ends with You [update 2]

E3 news is still trickling in, but we wouldn't be the DS Fanboy you know and love if we neglected to tell you how to buy cheap games.

The latest hot sale is something we've seen before -- The World Ends with You at Amazon for $29.99. Yet, that offer quickly went out of stock way back when, and many of you poor, unfortunate souls didn't get a chance to nab it at the time. In fact, from what we understand, the game is still hard to find at certain locations.

You can still get the title minus the "Square Enix tax," though, thanks to Amazon's revisiting of its previous sale price. This is a game that's actually worth all $40, too, so $30 is definitely a bargain.

[Update: Well that lasted a good ... half hour. Those of you who are set on the sale, it might be worth it to keep checking in at Amazon throughout the day. As of this moment, though, it seems that the price has gone back to $39.99.]

[Update 2: Well, what do you know, the price has gone back down to $29.99 again. That's one small step for man, and one giant "woot" from mankind. Once again tipped by supa_s -- we think he must have the magic touch.]

Play-Asia's Summer Sale makes importing cheap ... well, cheaper

Our wallets sighed in relief after finding out about a Play-Asia sale, and then ran away screaming once they realized that we were now tempted to import the entire store. If you import games as well, now's an opportune time at the online retailer, and if you don't, there's no better time to start. Play-Asia is currently having its annual Summer Sale, which started today and ends on July 20th. This means that every in-stock item is 25% off -- beautiful.

Even after just one day of sales, many coveted items have already gone out of stock. There's still a lot to be had, though, so make sure not to put your importing off for too long.

Transformers: The Movie: The Game: The Sale

The Transformers DS games got good-to-great reviews, which is unusual for a licensed game. In fact, Activision's DS games could be considered better than the movie, because they actually have Transformers in them, unlike Michael Bay's awkward teenage comedy with occasional background robots.

In case you missed Amazon's Gold Box deal back in April, the retailer has put Transformers: Autobots back on sale for $10. After today, the listing will instantly transform back into a full-priced game, but for now it's in the shape of a pretty good deal!

Archaic Sale Heat: SRPG import for $11

Now might not be the best time to order a Japanese copy of Archaic Sealed Heat, what with E3 right around the corner and a U.S. localization likely, but Play Asia is doing its best to convince us otherwise! The import online shop is selling copies of the gorgeous Mistwalker-developed title for only $11.90 (plus s/h). The deal lasts until next Monday, too, so they're giving us a lot of time to talk ourselves into it.

As far as SRPGs go, you really can't find anything cheaper! Well, unless you pick up Square Enix's iPod-exclusive Song Summoner for $4.99.

Atlus lovers, head to Amazon

We've already established that having the Atlus name on the front of a box is usually A Very Good Thing, and look! Somebody at Amazon must clearly have been listening to us, as the uber-retailer has the following Atlus-published titles up for sale:
  • Rondo of Swords -- $19.99
  • Draglade -- $13.39
  • Ontamarama -- $10.04
  • Contact -- $23.44
  • Touch Detective 2 1/2 -- $9.99
That's not all -- while we were scrounging though Amazon's bargain basement section, we found a couple of other potentially worthy additions to your DS library:
  • Children of Mana -- $20.09
  • Viewtiful Joe: Double Trouble -- $10.04
You can also get Ping Pals for $4.29. But like that deserves a functioning link.

Being a Wordmaster won't cost much

It's not often that a game goes on sale before it's even released, not that we're complaining. If you enjoy word games, then, you might want to consider picking up Wordmaster at Amazon. Although the MSRP is $19.99, Amazon is currently offering the game for $13.99, which is as budget as it gets for a new release.

The title doesn't even come out until July 15th, but you can preorder now if you want to secure the game for cheap. As for what Wordmaster is? Well, think Lingo or Jotto, only on the DS.

On a side note, you can also pick up Petz: Hamsterz 2 as Amazon's "Deal of the Day" for $11.99. Um, woot?

Amazon: $20 Advance Wars, $20 return on DS Lite

Amazon is currently stuffed full of great stuff for DS fans. Advance Wars: Days of Ruin is the latest Deal of the Day, though we're guessing that, with a $19.99 price tag, that one's gonna go fast. Or, if you happen to be in the market for a DS Lite, or a copy of Guitar Hero: On Tour, Advance Wars could be free. How? Amazon is currently offering a $20 gift card with the purchase of Guitar Hero or select Lite models. Not a bad deal for a couple of games and a peripheral, or a spankin' new DS Lite.

[Update: Reading comprehension suffers in the middle of the night. As a reader pointed out, the gift card deal is Guitar Hero: On Tour, plus a DS Lite, not one or the other. Less great deal, unless you were already looking for that combination! Thanks, Wiiboy!]

Amazon casts a Magical Starsale

By now, you've likely forgotten all about Brownie Brown's Magical Starsign, one of the first Nintendo DS RPGs to make it stateside. Its rudimentary plot -- rescue your classmates after your magic school's fleet of space ships crash on a group of planets -- won't set anyone's heart on fire, but, from what we've heard, it's still an enjoyable game.

Amazon has Magical Starsign on sale for $8.99, the lowest we've ever seen for the game! If you're looking for a decent (and cheap) RPG to pass the summer with, or if you're just looking to fill out your DS library, pick it up before the day and the sale ends.
