Bust ghosts and wish upon stars with Band Brothers DX

As we've previously noted, there's a lot more to Band Brothers DX than J-pop. Nintendo just updated the list of the game's downloadable content, and there are several tracks (most of which tick the "shamelessly camp" and "80s" boxes) that will be recognizable to western eyes. These include cheesy power rock anthem "The Final Countdown," "Last Christmas," "Y.M.C.A.," and ... the Ghostbusters theme?! Man, you better believe that we're just one Thundercats theme away from getting our import on right this second, Nintendo! Here's what being offered up, complete with YouTube linkage:
  • "Ghostbusters"
  • "Last Christmas"
  • "Daydream Believer"
  • "Stand by Me"
  • "The Loco-Motion"
  • "Saturday Night"
  • "The Final Countdown"
  • "When You Wish Upon A Star"
  • "Gonna Fly Now"
  • "Highway Star"
  • "ABC"
  • "Y.M.C.A."
As if choosing what to download wasn't already difficult enough! Hit the gallery for a dozen fresh shots of the title.

What you gonna port?

This is kind of hilarious. Not long after the details of the new Ghostbusters DS game were revealed, describing a game that sounds extremely similar to the old Ghostbusters game, a French homebrewer calling himself sephiroth_FF7 released an alpha of a DS port based on the Sega Master System game.

In essence, he's beaten Sierra to the punch. This isn't some quick port, either. The game is based on elements of different versions of the game according to sephiroth_FF7's own preference, while the graphics hew closely to the Master System version.

Of course, this raises the question of why someone would go to that much trouble to remake this game. But more importantly, why is Sierra going to even more trouble to do so commercially?

Ghostbusters DS inspired by ghosts of Ghostbusters games

We never thought for a second that the Ghostbusters DS game would play like any of the console versions. Rather than swinging a proton pack around and fighting ghosts and all that annoying stuff, the DS version focuses on the most compelling part of the movies' universe: running a business. As a Ghostbusters franchisee, you'll be in charge of managing your franchise, busting ghosts to earn money so you can buy better equipment.

This sounds exactly like the old 8-bit Ghostbusters game, the "best" version of which can be found on the Sega Master System. That game involved driving and action sequences during ghostbusting missions. We don't know yet how much action will be involved in the new version, whether it will be a remake of this game or an expanded strategy/tycoon-type game.

The timeline is different, occuring after Ghostbusters II rather than during the first movie (which means no Keymaster and Gatekeeper wandering the streets). We hope the gameplay is different in some significant way from the original game, at least in the "being profoundly terrible" department.
