DS Daily: GameStart

Whatever we think about GameStop's latest initiative to bring people (specifically, women) into the store, we can at least say with certainty that it's fairly interesting. We aren't sure how well it will work, but it's interesting.

Most game enthusiasts end up in a GameStop now and again even if they don't care for the chain, either because they want to pick up new releases without waiting or paying for shipping, or they want something that isn't available new anymore -- or because there's one nearby and they're bored.

What is your opinion of the in-store atmosphere? What could be done to make it friendlier and/or more inviting? Besides just giving us some free games, that is. That would work pretty well. If any GameStop execs are reading, you can go ahead and write that one down and present it as your own at the next big meeting. We don't need credit or anything.

GameStop's new 'Me Time Anytime' program targeted at women

Let's get the obvious joke out of the way: The original name for the new GameStop initiative was "Let's Try to Get a Woman Into GameStop Maybe."

GameStop has announced a new program called "Me Time, Anytime" in which customers are encouraged to come into one of 1,500 US GameStop locations and try out the DS and its games. From 11a.m. to 2p.m. on October 18 (otherwise known as "not anytime,") this special demo station, called the "Me Time Test Drive" will be available, and employees will, of course, be on hand to answer questions.

In addition, seven GameStops in major cities (see the press release for locations) will host Marquee events from 10a.m. to 6p.m. which will include "refreshments and music" as well as prizes. Nintendo representatives will be present to "help with your Nintendo DS needs." According to the press release, GameStop stores have already started handing out "designer carrying cases" with purchases of a DS console and a new game.

We don't think transparently desperate promotions and free refreshments are going to do anything to bring more people into GameStop. For future events, we'd suggest "We Won't Make a Big Deal Out of It When a Woman Comes In" day and "You Probably Don't Want a Preorder, a Warranty, or a Discount Card, So We Just Won't Bother You About It" day.

GameStop can't take all the blame for this futile, vaguely exploitive promotion. The presence of Nintendo reps at the larger events, as well as the way the "Me Time" name ties so nicely in with Nintendo's own "I Play for Me" campaign suggests that it is a coordinated effort between the retailer and Nintendo.

'New' Palkia/Dialga DS Lite appears at GameStop

Talk about a blast from the past -- this Palkia/Dialga-branded Pokémon DS Lite appeared in Japan almost two years ago, to coincide with the release of Pearl and Diamond. But it will soon be making a comeback, and at a GameStop near you, North Americans -- Go Nintendo reader Spindash snapped this promotional display at his local store. We've no date yet, but further shots reveal a price tag of $129.99, with the final package including a matching case, a 22-minute Pokémon Dungeon DVD, a Grovyle poster, and a T-shirt. Noice!

Just one question, Nintendo: why no Giratina Lite?

Super Dodgeball Bargain

We were dismayed (but not surprised) when Aksys Games' Super Dodgeball Brawlers failed to ignite the sales chartz. In a DS Fanboy-run world, any new Kunio game would be the subject of massive in-store promotions, print, TV, and online advertising, and magazine covers galore. But in the inferior real world, it's just a cute DS game that reminds people of that one NES game they played on an emulator in college.

In case you are among the group interested in Brawlers, but didn't have the cash together to pick it up, Gamestop has dropped the price to $20. This game for $20 is the best post-E3 news yet!

$10 Orcs and Elves on Gamestop shelves

This tempting deal applies to brick and mortar stores only, but some eagle-eyed Cheap Ass Gamers noticed that Orcs and Elves is available at Gamestop for $9.99. The game may be a cell phone port, but $10 for John Carmack's fantastical dungeon-crawler is a more-than-fair price.

Ten bucks appears to be the going rate at all Gamestops, but we'll throw in a "your mileage may vary" warning just in case. Unfortunately, you won't be able to snag the sweet-looking wand stylus with this purchase, but cheap gamers like us just have to cut corners sometimes.

You may not be able to buy the game online, but by clicking on the picture or the "Source" link below, you can see if it's available at a Gamestop near you.

Price Drop: Shiren the Bargainer

If our constant championing of the genre has you ready and willing to try out a roguelike as soon as a cheap one comes along, then here's that discount dungeon crawl you've been waiting for!

In what looks to be a permanent price drop, retailers such as Amazon and GameStop have marked down their copies of Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer to $19.99, in-store and and online. Now you don't have to feel guilty about spending money on such a throwback game (with throwback graphics to match).

If you won't buy it for the fun of the game, buy it so that Sega will bring its sequel to the states!

GameStop handing out Deoxyses this month [update]

[Update: fixed dates!]

Deoxi? Deoxes? However you want to pluralize it, Gamestop is offering downloads of that Pokémon in stores from the 20th to the 22nd and again from the 27th to the 29th. Deoxys is a Psychic-type Pokémon who has four different forms. If you're still playing Pokémon Diamond and/or Pearl, or if you have an overwhelming obsession with the catching of them all, bring your DS and game down to the store and be prepared to be hassled about preorders of games you don't want.

A few years back, NASA used Deoxys to help teach related science concepts like DNA to youngsters. And now GameStop's using Deoxys to help get youngsters inside GameStop!

More retail confirmation of Elebits 2, Docomodake

A few weeks ago, Elebits 2: Adventures of Kai & Zero for the DS showed up on Gamefly's "coming soon" list. That listing has now been joined by one on Gamestop, with a similar title (minus the number) and an even closer date (August 1). Konami still has yet to make any announcements about a DS sequel to Elebits -- we were sure it would come out at their Gamers Day event, the same time Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia (itself the subject of protracted rumors) was revealed.

Another noteworthy new addition to Gamestop's list of upcoming games: Ignition Entertainment's release of the cell-phone mascot platformer Docomodake. We knew from an ESRB rating that it was coming, but not when -- Gamestop says next February. The new English title? Docomodake BOING!

Awkward fights over Mario and Sonic incoming: GameStop deals next week

GameStop's annual "Gamedays" sale starts next week, and the list of sale items has been posted on CAG. We've excised the more choice options here, and there are some tempting games indeed. For 10 bucks, Worms is almost irresistible, especially if you happen to know any communities that frequently gather for online DS games.

Apparently, games marked down for Gamedays are also being shipped out to stores. At least, this is true in the case of the PS2 Katamari Damacy (which you should already own, but buy it now for $10 if you don't). That means you have a shot at buying some of these, maybe! And don't forget to bring the 10% off coupon that was helpfully scanned and posted by a CAG member.
  • Dementium: $14.99
  • Digimon World: Dawn/Dusk: $19.99
  • Diner Dash: $14.99
  • Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games: $14.99
  • Nervous Brickdown: $14.99
  • Sega Superstars Tennis: $14.99
  • Worms: Open Warfare 2: $9.99

Rumor: Harvest Moon: Delay of Frustration

Once mooted for a June 8th release, Harvest Moon: Island of Happiness now looks like being held up for almost two months, after Gamestop listed a revised release date of July 29th.

Oh, sure, that's not the same as official confirmation from Natsume by any means, but we won't lie to you: we're all worried sick. Our cow, Clover (far right), is so concerned she's barely yielding any milk, the sheep are bleating more than usual, while mealtimes at the old farmhouse are now conducted in deathly silence. Even the chickens look sort of anxious.

Geometry Wars: Galaxies price's volume decreases by a third

We've gone over why Geometry Wars: Galaxies was worth its full $30 price several times already despite its cheaper Xbox Live Arcade predecessor -- portability, a robust campaign, a cooperative mode, touchscreen support, drones, etc.

Now that the game has seen a universal price drop, bringing its retail price to $19.99, right in that budget-title range, you'll have a tougher time arguing that the added features aren't worth the price. Basically, if you're a fan of multi-directional shooters and if you have twenty bucks just laying around, pick this up!

Rumor: Metallic Rose DS Lite inbound

Go Nintendo is reporting a rumor that those of us here in the United States could be getting a new DS Lite model soon, in the form of the beauty you see above. Keen observers will notice that this is the same color that came in the Nintendogs bundle that released alongside the Phantom Hourglass bundle, only without the paw print.

This rumor comes from "a few GameStop insiders," so we're not sure we entirely believe this model is releasing. Until we get official confirmation, we aren't going to hold our breath.

Free headphones with Guitar Hero On Tour at Gamestop

Headphones are an absolute must for handheld music games, unless you're a) alone or b) a jerk. You're almost required to have the sound on, unlike other portable games, and it would be quite rude to subject the other bus passengers (or other neighbors) to your racket. Guitar Hero: On Tour also puts your neighbors in danger of a serious jostling should your fake solos get too energetic, but there's not really an accessory that could help with that, aside from elbow pads.

GameStop has taken the extremely sensible step of bundling a pair of On Tour-branded headphones with copies of the game. If you're going to be buying the thing anyway, might as well get extra free stuff with it!

In other On Tour accessories news, the "Ruby Red" accessory pack is now pictured on GameStop's website.

Prices dropping like flies: Insecticide markdown

Insecticide never seemed like a title destined to set the sales charts on fire, so we're not surprised to see retailers already marking down the noir title. Less than two months after Insecticide's release, Amazon, GameStop, and other shops have chopped the half-adventure, half-platforming game down to $19.99, a two-thirds its original price.

And if that's still too much for you, you could buy Nirvana's Incesticide for only $7.97, less than half of Insecticide's price. What's the difference between the two, you ask? Well, it just so happens that we've put together a lovely comparison guide that should help you with that question.

Spend 2 1/2 $10-dollar bills on Touch Detective, Sega Superstars Tennis

You'll have to forgive our convoluted title -- really, it couldn't be helped. If it's not immediately clear, and we very much doubt that it is, GameStop has two great DS online and in-store deals this week:
Which both add up to $25 (provided that you round up)! See what we did there? Two-and-a-half $10 bills? $25? Come on!
