Recycle your junk into a DS accessory

One of the more fun, crafty trends that has come up in DS fan culture is the homemade DS case. Clever fans are always looking for unusual materials from which they can make cute DS Lite cases. The results are often eye-catching and whimsical, and, on occasion, turn out to be useful as well. The crafters save money on materials, and waste less not only by not buying a new DS case (with disposable packaging) but by opting not to throw away something that has outlived its original usefulness.

We're going to look at some of the recycled-material DS cases we've featured in the past, as well as a couple that we haven't. Then, finally, we'll present our own craft project, which is more on the 'silly' end of the DS case spectrum. It totally holds a DS, though!

DS Daily: Pants, re-revisited (and more)

We've seen cases made from a variety of hilarious and useful objects, like duct tape, sushi mats, socks, and, well, pants. Even if you're not the crafty type, have you ever looked at something and thought, now that could make a good case? What would make a funny case? Share your ideas -- and cases you've seen!

Pants, revisited

For some, the current selection of game cases for the DS just doesn't meet their needs. Christina Cary, for example, wanted to pack away her bulky plastic boxes, but wasn't able to find a storage solution with enough slots to hold her carts. Even Penguin Unlimited's pouch, for all its cuteness, only holds 24 games -- a paltry amount for the serious collectors out there.

Christina ended up doing what any creative craftster would do -- make a case of her own with whatever she had lying around the house. She scrounged up fabric from a pair of pants, plastic from an old pencil case, and other materials to create a 36-cart caddy that rolls up like a rug and sticks shut with two squares of velcro.

Save your gil for the Square Enix online shop

If there's one defining characteristic of the Square Enix fanbase, it's that they love buyin' stuff. How else would you explain the myriad re-releases of Final Fantasy games? Square Enix hopes to facilitate these fans' insatiable need to fill their inventories. They've set up a website that will, in the near future, be the home of an official Square Enix shop.

Will they have lots of expensive figurines? No doubt! Will you be able to buy the Potion drink there? Possibly! How about Tidus's pants, as seen above? Why, there's no end to the kinds of pants they could sell!

Not literally. If they never ended, there'd be no holes to put your feet through.

Finally, a use for pants

Craftster user Trip_and_fall has made what must be the most charming DS Lite case ever. Or the creepiest, depending on your perspective. On the one hand, it's made out of some old Frito-Lay pajamas. On the other hand, it's made out of old pants. Does that bother anyone else?

We'd also like to point out the delicious irony involved in making a pocket out of pants so that your DS Lite doesn't get scratched up in your pants pocket. Furthermore, we'd like to point out that Doritos are often even more delicious than irony.

An injeanious DS Lite case (and a very bad pun)

Having decided that a mere pocket wasn't enough to protect his brand new DS Lite and games, inventive blogger John Spain decided to grab a pair of old jeans and thoroughly molest it with a rotary cutter, copious amounts of glue and intricate Origami-style folding techniques. The DS-friendly end result is nothing short of amazing, proving yet again that pants are far better off in the hands of a bored man than on the legs of a busy one.

That sounded a little weird.

[Thanks jps!]
