Limited Edition lust: A visual journey

Here in the U.S., we're finally seeing a few more colors, though nothing to compare with the rest of the world. That's not the only area in which the DS is lacking, either; we've missed out on some truly spectacular limited edition systems. While we get the somewhat lackluster Guitar Hero DS, Japanese DS owners are rolling around with eye-searing yellow Pikachu Lites, plain-Jane Final Fantasy Lites, the gorgeous silver Lite for It's a Wonderful World, and even a Bathing Ape DS.

If you happen to be sitting on a mountain of cash, you might have one of these, or another example of a fantastic Japan-exclusive. It's more likely, however, that you're like us when one of these babies debuts; you sit at your desk, tears slipping down your cheeks, as you press one forlorn hand against the screen. Since it's Monday, let's get all this week's wallowing and depression out of the way right now with a little journey through some of the special editions the world has seen -- from the ones you could get to the ones that were a little out of reach.

Prepare to drool.

Nintendo Japan sent out GIRATINA DS LITE! DS Fanboy fainted!

Members of Japan's Pokémon Daisuki Club will soon be able to (enter a raffle to potentially) buy a Giratina edition Nintendo DS Lite bundle, consisting of Pokémon Platinum and a swoon-worthy Lite that has been subtly branded with the Platinum cover star.

Like many limited edition DSes, supply is expected to be short, so hopeful owners will have to submit an entry form to enter the draw, where they could win the right to give Nintendo money -- ¥21,600 ($203), to be precise. The raffle ends on July 14th (and is for Japanese residents only), and 1,000 of the names drawn will be eligible for an even rarer metallic Giratina figurine. Remind us again, please: why are we still living in not-Japan?

Go past the break for a closer look.

Guitar Hero DS bundle is almost perfect

We love our two-tone DSes around these parts, and the model that will ship as part of the Guitar Hero: On Tour bundle is especially delicious. Frankly, silver and black will always be a winning combination. It's a color scheme that cannot fail to look classy and sleek.

Alas, whoever designed this model didn't stop at just silver and black, but also decided to slap that ugly transfer onto the DS's upper lid. We appreciate some Guitar Hero branding was probably required for this, but couldn't it have been a little ... subtler? For those of you who are fans, Toys "R" Us currently has this down for a June 29th release on its site, one week after the game itself hits shelves.

Someone that isn't us has this limited edition system

Whenever anyone announces one of these limited edition DS Lite systems in Japan, we try to push them out of our memories immediately after reporting them here, afraid that if we dwell on these designer handhelds too long, we'll only make ourselves even more depressed than we already are. Just when we think we've put these fantasies of owning rare portables behind us, however, someone always has to remind us that they exist.

DS Fanboy reader Supa_s, for example, sent in photos of her Honeyee x Fragment Design DS Lite, a slick, duotone system from seminal streetwear designer Hiroshi Fujiwara. Though she's hesitant to reveal where she obtained the remarkable handheld, she admits that it wasn't cheap -- approximately $400. Yeah, totally banoodles.

Buying the accompanying Honeyee x Fragment Design case would have cost her an additional $100, so she skipped that extra purchase, using a Club Nintendo case instead to carry the system. Her impressions on the system? "I love it, but I worry about the L & R buttons getting yellowish. I like the way it feels -- it's kind of like the bottom part of the Cobalt DS, but much smoother." Hit the gallery below for more photos of the Honeyee x Fragment Design DS Lite.

If you need us, we'll be staring at our plain, ordinary DS Lite from across the room, crying over dreams deferred, haunted by the ghosts of what should have been.

Another (slim) chance to own THAT Pikachu DS Lite

Many of you will no doubt recall the gorgeous and very, very yellow limited edition Pikachu DS that remains painfully unattainable to us. With no official release planned for the hardware, we began to give up hope on ever owning one, but it looks like Nintendo could be offering another two Pikachu Lites to winners of a new contest being held to promote Pokémon Mystery Dungeon twosome Explorers of Darkness and Explorers of Time.

You can enter once a day between now and May 21st, when a couple of lucky winners will clinch themselves a treasure chest containing the most beautiful DS Lite known to man, a Wii, a HDTV, and more Pokémon goodies than they can shake a stick at. Head here to learn more.

DS Daily: That special stylus

From swords to ... uh, more swords, we've seen quite a few special styli in our day. Some are colorful and some are extendable, but the stylus gift is pretty common with DS games. Do you own any special edition styli? Do you wish you did? If so, which ones? And we're not talking about just any random stylus here, though there are plenty of awesome DS accessories, but those specifically designed for (or that come with) certain games.

Well, not all of it. This is more about the highlights, the big news of the year. The kind of stuff that we should look back to and highlight as being memorable in 2007. Yummy new DS bundles not coming to Europe

Qu'une surprise! It turns out that Europe won't be getting those rather ace new DS bundles that we originally covered on Monday. Eurogamer got on the dog and bone to Nintendo's European arm to inquire about whether the Zelda and Nintendogs-themed handhelds would see the light of day here, and promptly got a big fat "No"/"Non"/"Nein"/"Nyet" for their troubles.

In fact, yours truly was tempted to use this news as a platform for a wild-eyed rant about how Nintendo hates Europe (and how that's actually quite strange, all things considered) but heck, that particular horse has been firmly flogged into a fine pulp by now.

Less pretty Phantom Hourglass special edition bundle appears

While it's not the gorgeous, golden special edition DS Lite of various rumors, what we have above is still a special edition Lite, and that makes it better than nothing. The emblazoned edition popped up on Nindie.com with no price and a placeholder release date of December 31. Could there be two editions this year, or could this one be specific to Europe? We can't wait to see how this plays out -- but if any game deserves numerous special editions, it's Phantom Hourglass.

Show and Tell: Straight outta Japan

With all the news from TGS this week, we thought it might be the perfect time to tie in with a little Show and Tell session featuring the limited edition DS Lites those of us outside Japan so often sigh over. Reader Eoghan sent in the picture available after the break, and now we just want to track down the location of these goodies and rob them. And then we thought ... if PAX is a veritable DS mecca, what must the crowd at TGS look like? These things could be everywhere. Oh well. Since we're not there to ogle the array of Lites, we'll just have to make due with Eoghan's very pretty picture.

Got something you want to show off? Crafts, cakes, collections from modest to extreme, t-shirts ... whatever you've got, if it has a little Nintendo flavor, we want to see it. Just take some pictures (or copy your web album links) and send them to showmeit [at] dsfanboy [dot] com. We'll take care of the rest.
