Band Brothers DX enlists Japanese celebrity for commercial

Nintendo of Japan's DS site has a new commercial up for Band Brothers DX. With the title due for release in Japan on the 26th of this month, Nintendo is putting on its marketing hat and showing a new ad to Japanese gamers.

Nintendo has enlisted the aid of Japanese celeb Thelma Aoyama to help them promote the title. If you're clueless as to who she is, then you probably don't live in Japan and should check out this Wikipedia page.

Sadly, like most Japanese advertisements, this one is way too short and doesn't show enough gameplay.

DS Daily: Marketing the product

You know, we were thinking about the celebrity DS endorsement put on by Nintendo over at "I Play For Me" and we wondered how effective such marketing actually is? Everyone and their grandmother has at least 4 DS Lites and 4 copies of Brain Age and Brain Age 2 to accompany their handhelds, so what could this accomplish? Does the thing even need to be advertised, even on the web?

Then again, we thought that perhaps thinking about advertising is a wasted effort. If you're anything like us, you're too busy playing with one of your DS Lites to watch television. So let's switch gears.

If you were in charge of creating an advertising campaign for the DS, what would it be like? Would you sell out and have a commercial starring Chuck Norris? Would you travel to a small, mid-west town and hand out bundles to all the folk residing within?

Promotional Consideration: Moons, Zombies, Dodgeballs, and Tactics

Aside from its preview page tease and Time Hollow's localization, there wasn't much in the way of exclusive DS news in this month's Nintendo Power, at least compared to what we've seen in recent issues.

Paging through the magazine, however, we spotted at least two advertisements that we wanted to share with you. As we were tearing them out to throw into our scanner, we thought, "Why not post all of the other DS ads (and the cover)?" Join us past the break for the scanned pages!

Pokemon Ranger 2 goodies from Japan

Fans of the Pokemon franchise (see: uh, everyone?) and, more specifically, the Pokemon Ranger franchise, were ecstatic to hear (and see) that a sequel to the touch-screen-intensive game is coming. Well, prepare to become even more excited, as we've got a gallery of images for you to go through below, as well as a link to the Japanese commercial for the game. What else could you ask for?

Oh, right ... an actual copy of the game. Well, you'll have to wait a bit on that one.

Promotional Consideration: Black Hole Advertising

Promotional Consideration is a weekly feature about the Nintendo DS advertisements you usually flip past, change the channel on, or just tune out.

Considering that you've put up with the dozens of posts we've published for Advance Wars: Days of Ruin so far, we're sure you'll forgive us for revisiting War Worlds again so soon with this column. This week, Promotional Consideration examines the print ad Nintendo rolled out in 2003 for Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising. Position your units, end your turn, and peek past the break for more text.

Promotional Consideration: Mario's DIY signs

Giant advertising firms with international clients and extravagant budgets aren't the only people working hard to push their video games on you; small mom-and-pop stores also develop stratagems to attract the casual shoppers who haven't yet decided on what to buy. These sales-generating tactics can be something as simple as putting up a notice about in-demand consoles being in stock, or as annoying as hard-selling you on preorders and magazine subscriptions.

One of our favorite schemes, and the topic for this week's Promotional Consideration installment, relies on setting up homemade signs with creative interpretations of video gaming's most recognizable mascot, Mario. Join us past the post break for some of the interesting Japanese in-store displays that we've come across.

Promotional Consideration: Underground Brain Training

Those of you lucky enough to live in a city with a rapid transit system have likely seen at least one ad for a handheld game during your commutes. After all, what better audience to advertise a portable title to than people who're trapped in a high-speed steel car full of strangers while they wait to be ferried from one spot to another?

In honor of Brain Age 2's release in the states last week, we'll be looking at a few ads we found for Nintendo's educational software that've appeared in transit stations in countries like Canada and France. Join us past the post break for this week's edition of Promotional Consideration.

If you missed our spotlight on Leo Burnett's "Communion Day" ad last Sunday, make sure to give it a glance. Even if you've already skimmed through our words on the award-winning piece, we've updated our summation with some insight from art director Rosemary Collini Bosso.

This weekend's installment of Promotional Consideration takes a critical eye to an unconvincing ad that might actually drive away consumers. Read on for more details.

Harvest Moon Crossing

Harvest Moon DS saw its US release over half a year ago, but the colorful farming sim didn't cross the Atlantic until earlier this month. A TV commercial advertising the game has been airing in the UK, and we were surprise to see how similar its presentation is to Nintendo's commercials for Animal Crossing: Wild World in Japan and Europe.

AC:WW was an indisputable success sales-wise in every territory, so we can see why Nintendo would want to mimic its marketing push with Harvest Moon DS. Compare the video clips yourself after the post break to see what we mean.

Sim City hits the road

These should be in every city -- mobile game advertisements. Especially when it's Sim City DS we're talking about here. This van is scheduled to hit five Japanese cities over the next few weeks: Fukuoka, Osaka, Nagoya, Sapporo and Tokyo. If you happen to be there, or know someone who is, check out the schedule and snag some pics!
