2 million and counting [Update 1]

It's true.

Heads up, statisticians; we've got another Nintendo milestone for ya. At some undisclosed time on Thursday morning, the two millionth unique user logged into the Nintendo Wi-Fi system. Since Nintendo loves to put big numbers in perspective, their press release points out that this number is more than the population of fifteen of the United States...which, of course, is sort of silly, seeing as how the tally is coming from players worldwide. Still, it's an impressive number, and perhaps this added confidence in online gaming will give Nintendo the shove it needs to back it unconditionally for the upcoming Wii.

Upcoming games utilizing the Nintendo Wi-Fi feature? Some big ones: Final Fantasy III, Star Fox: Command, Yoshi's Island 2, you name it. Nintendo WFC is here to stay.

[Update 1: Mario Hoops, unfortunately, does not feature Wi-Fi play. Our bad.]

1. Why is it silly? They arn' saying that 2 million came from 15 states. They are trying to give the number 2 million a physical appearance so people understand how many that truely is. People and companys do this all the time.

2. umm, I thought dsfanboy posted an article on how Mario Hoops 3-on-3 was not WiFi compatable?

3. So, the graph above is cute and all, but you do realize that if you're counting unique users the plotted data will simply be an increasing curve, not the fluctuating "stock-market-like" curve you have.

Other than the misrepresentation on the graph, this is great news for nintendo!

4. Actually, Nintendo WFC users occasionally remove themselves from the timestream entirely. This explains the fluctuating curve.

5. How about how many people play on it for a regular period of time?

I tried it once on Mario Kart DS and the matchmaking sucked so bad that I never connected again.

If you read the news, its how many people have logged on to the Wifi Connection.

What would be more useful data is how many people are logged on at any time.

#3, for the data reported, you are right, that graph is fake as hell.

You can't un-log on. Once you've connected to NWFC for the first time, a database shows one more unique person has connected.

Unless you can hack into Nintendo's databases, you can't "remove" the tally you left.

8. Wait... what governs a "unique" log-on? If I accidently play Tetris DS in a new system, and have to re-register a friends code, that makes me a new log-in... Like when I had to switch from DS Phat to DS Lite.. or when I had to replace my DS Lite and didn't get a chance to change settings... and the standard player dosen't know how to transfer wifi settings.

10. honestly i think that nintendo is purposely misrepresenting these numbers. It takes forever to find a match on metroid, and when i do it is usually 1 on 1. Im thinking when you log on from a different router its a new user? i dunno.. but claiming nintendo's wifi is a success is misleading...
