While the latest Pokemon release causes massive amounts of excitement in fans, it has also been known to cause severe depression, brought on by the fact that Gold and Silver, along with Ruby and Sapphire, just did not allow you to transfer your pokemon. Well, with the impending release of Diamond and Pearl, Nintendo will finally correct the issue. The transfer will be achieved by placing one of the GBA games into the GBA slot of your DS, with either Diamond or Pearl resting comfortably in its respective place Upon start up, you want to go into Diamond/Pearl and make sure you meet the requirements needed in whichever GBA game you're using to trade pokemon. Also, it is important to know that in Diamond/Pearl you must achieve a certain in-game task before you are able to utilize the transfer system, which should not be confused with trading at the Pokemon Center. Finally, all of your pokemon in Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed or LeafGreen will live on and be saved from the cold, dark cartridge you left them in so long ago.

Knowing Nintendo, this ingame task will be all the way at the end of the game like in Leaf Green/Fire Red...

Gold and Silver did allow you to transfer... you just had to beat like 3 gym leaders so the guy could finish building his time machine.

With the Metal Generation (Gold/Silver/Crystal), it was easy to transfer Pokémon from the Color Generation (Red/Green/Blue/Yellow) as Game Boy Color was basically a souped-up Game Boy (they both used a Z80 processor, but GBC's was more powerful).
But with the Advance Generation (Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald/FireRed/LeafGreen), it wasn't possible, as GBA was completely new hardware (using an ARM7 processor), and wasn't designed with backwards link-up with GB/GBC games (and the only reason GBA/GBASP could play legacy games was because it had a Z80 processor built-in as well; GBM/DS/DSL lack the Z80).
But with the Dual Generation (Diamond/Pearl), the DS was designed to use GBA data while playing DS games (as already shown in Pokémon Dash, WarioWare Touched!, Feel the Magic: XY♥XX, etc.). So, transferring Pokémon between Advance and Dual will be a snap.
(Hey, that made me think of something: they should totally do a Pokémon Snap DS!)
Oh, and it was known since the Dual Generation was first announced that it would be able to communicate with the Advance Generation. :)

I'm confused.
When you transfer the Pokemon from your GBA game, is it permanently erased from the game when being transferred to the DS?
That would suck cuz I'd still want to play the GBA game without having to restart. (although, to be fair, I bought Emerald solely for this transfer feature. Look out people, my team is ONLINE!)

I'm quite glad Nintendo makes it so you can't just instantly transfer your old Pokemon to the new game.
I for one would be far too tempted to simply transfer one powerhouse Pokemon to the new title, and then blaze through the game far too fast, taking a lot of fun away in the process.
I always enjoy raising my new Pokemon crew with each title I pick up, usually trying to change it up a bit so I get to enjoy all the different creatures offered. In the end I'm just glad Nintendo is there to save me from myself.

Marc, it probably works like the Metal Generation's Time Machine. You still have to trade for the Pokémon, so you need something (like a lowly Rattata) to send back to the Advance Generation game.

It is said that you can only send 6 over per day, and it looks like it is a permanant transfer, not a trade.

Sounds good. I hope they require that both the DS and the GBA games have been beaten and I like the limit of six Pokémon per day. It keeps things from getting too crazy online and keeps the DS games fresh.

Anyone know any way to maybe transfer Pokemon from Gold/Silver/Crystal to Ruby/Sapphire/Leaf Green/Fire Red? If so, we could circumvent this problem of transferring and get the old Pokemans to the DS. Maybe? Help!
