Why post with the tards at IGN???

The votes are already in, and the DS wins in a landslide. More people own a DS in Japan than a PS2. The PSP didn't even begin to sell in Japan until the release of Final Fantasy Crisis Core in late 2007.

ALL the PSP games can be played BETTER on a console (PS3, Xbox 360, etc.). All PSP games are essentially ports of console games. Meh.

The best DS games can NOT be played on a console (with the possible exception of the Wii). Elite Beat Agents (and Ouendan 1 & 2), Cooking Mama 1 & 2, Kirby Canvas Curse, The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, Trama Center, etc. are uniques games that can only be played on the DS (okay, I know there is a Wii version of Cooking Mama & Trama Center, but the Wii is an exception to the rule). These games are NOT ports of console games, which is why DS games pwn PSP games.

The DS rules, and the PSP ... well if I wanted to play a PSP game, why wouldn't I just play a console game instead???

Though I'd generally agree with the conclusions.. seems like the list of games they are considering is generally lacking. Take the psp and rpg's, there's been a LOT of rpgs for the psp and a handful of good ones especially if they consider ports (castlevania dracula x, disgaea, final fantasy tactics).

The DS port of Rayman 2 is not the best comparison. It was a terrible port of a marvelous game.

I'm kind of surprised that Yoshi's Island was neglected from the platformer list. I think that game completely outshines NSMB.

Why weren't CoD4 and Contra 4 on there? Hmmm... IGN really screwed that list up on some other categories too. But yeah, the PSP is just a port system pretty much, while dS games are individual and unique, and (for the most part aside from the Wii) can only be played on the DS. Plus, Yoshi's Island did own a while ago, but unlike NSMB, it isn't that much fun to pick up again after you've beaten it. Still, definitely shoulda been on the list. Pkus, Nintendo is the king of platformers. IGN is retarded to declare the platformer genre a tie just because of the mediocre Daxter and the pretty good Size Matters.

I like both my systems, but I do grab for my DS more often, and it's the only one that I bring along if I have to drive somewhere. While I do love my PSP, I usually find that I have a better game on a console with less loading time and better controls that I could just as easily be playing. It must be the uniqueness and exclusivity of the DS games that draws me to them.

I actually thought it was a fairly decent analysis. The biggest thing I take exception to though is the strategy category, which the DS wins hands down in my opinion, and is only getting stronger. Sorry, but having Final Fantasy tactics doesn't automatically even the score.

I can appreciate the effort, IGN seems to have tried using games which are likely to reach the biggest audiences in the US. However, with the extent of both system's libraries, determining which games or systems are best is entirely subjective. Breaking the list into game genres won't give any applicable insight to somebody with different tastes to the mainstream.

I couldn't get into Phantom Hourglass or Pokemon Pearl at all and I don't play Mario games because the genre is unappealing to me. I instead adored Hotel Dusk and Etrian Odyssey which are unlikely to be seen as the best representatives of their respective American genres for the DS. I happen to dislike shooters (I love shmups but those are different) but as I love strategy games and RPGs I instantly went for Disgaea, Riviera, and Jeanne d'Arc upon their respective releases. Riviera was first released in US on the GBA but that doesn't detract from its charm. I also have DJ Max 2 for the PSP and Ontamarama for the DS, both games are of the same genre but play differently (and most importantly, both are fun). I wouldn't consider Hotel Dusk to be better or worse than Air, or Izuna better or worse than Valkyrie Profile because they're all different games with their own attractive aspects.

I think IGN's list is good for showing the general strengths of each console and what each one offers, especially for those who are unfamiliar with either or both of them. However, it won't serve as an accurate measure for most gamers looking to pick up only one of the systems as tastes can vary dramatically. Nobody would have a PSP if everyone preferred the DS counterparts to PSP games, or vice versa. I'm pleased with both my DS and PSP purchases (even though, ironically, my launch day DS has recently developed a dead pixel (I don't know if the wording for that is right) whereas my PSP is in perfect condition).

Please ignore the plethora of mentioned Atlus titles. The only publisher I own more games from than Atlus is Nintendo which should help evidence my gravitation towards less mainstream titles. XP

BlackDS: "More people own a DS in Japan than a PS2." is true in Japan but is not at all an accurate statement when comparing global sales. I also think it's worth at least looking into what games the PSP libary has to offer because it doesn't comprise only of lackluster PS1 and PS2 ports just as the DS library obviously doesn't comprise only of rushed puzzle and petz/babyz training games.

Jacob: The PSP does have Jeanne d'Arc and Disgaea (even though FF Tactics and Disgaea are ports, The DS's original flagship Super Mario 64 DS was a port). I wouldn't count out the PSP in the Strategy RPG department until Fire Emblem 11 comes out. :)

I'm surprised that Phoenix Wright is just placed under the miscellaneous category, but then I'm not sure the PSP has any adventure games up for competition. Although the DS has lots of adventure games like Hotel Dusk, Trace Memory, and Lifesigns Surgical Unit.
I understand the omission of the Jump games, as they are imports.

I don't even get how ppl can compare the two. It's really based on preference.

I prefer the PSP, but heck for sure I own and love my DS. I even own two DSLites. Also, the port reasoning is the stupidest reasoning to use when pretty much majority of the DS games are from either N64 or on the Wii; even on the addictinggames.com. Most of these DS games are simple Macro Flash games. But why buy the DS or PSP, oh yeah, it's PORTABLE FOR TRAVEL!

Why do I prefer the PSP? Well I like the variety of features and functions; also the games are to my taste, MY taste. Just like why I carry a Blackberry now and not a cellphone, the features and functions. This reasoning is why Opera internet and the Seg1 TV was made for the DS b/c ppl love features and useless functions. You think I use the internet browser for the PSP, HELL NO it sucks, but it's awesome to know I have it on there. Skype? HAHA I do not even know anyone that uses Skype, but guess what, hell YEAH I have it! Even with Nintendogs, I have a dog at home, but not at work I don't. Do I play with it? NO, but I'm glad I have it. HAHAHA

Also, like earlier posters have said, who the hell visits IGN?

IMO its a pretty nice list .... Im sad to see that so many of you guys cant give any love for the PSP , while I can say that having both is by far the best way to go ... the PSP has some awesome game , but the DS has them to , so IMO both handhelds are equel in quality ...

Seems to me that this just confirms how subjective this comparison really is. Simply put, I would rather play just one of the DS games worth mentioning over the whole batch of PSP games in certain categories (FPS field, for example). I think that what is often neglected is that video games are more than just graphics and gameplay. They're also an immersive experience that creates a world that the player can revel in. That being said, more often than not, the worlds I enjoy are those created by Nintendo or for Nintendo. Furthermore, consideration of how the system feels in your hands and looks to your eyes is also important and for that reason as well, I would side with the DS.

Different strokes for different folks. I just don't know if I could really say that PSP wins simply because games with large fan-bases were counted up and in certain genres, there were more games with large fan bases for one system than for another.

The DS is slowly becoming one of my favorite consoles, its in my top 3 already. Contra 4 should be on the list and I also feel metroid is the best portable fps ever. As far as strategy. That def goes to the DS hands down, and the soon to be legendary advance wars days of ruin will make it a no win situation for the psp. The DS's sleep feature as well as its long battery life make NYC subway rides almost bearable. I alsop appreciate the smart industrial design of the ds. I think the DS needs help with its multiplayer wifi functionality.

But I feel I'm the only older nyc gamer on the subways. Most older gamers I see have a psp.
