Yume Neko DS parades the cute kitties around in latest ad

If you have severe heart problems, then we suggest you watch the video above. Why? Well, the power of cute pets is known the world over and we've never underestimated the worth of something that makes you go "awww." And with everything we've seen on Yume Neko DS so far, we're convinced that this is going to be the most purest concentration of cute found outside of searching for kittens on YouTube or a certain website called Cute Overload.

Gamestop preorder bonus for Harvest Moon DS Cute is cute

Gamestop can be so cruel to our wallets. We try to resist their silly preorder bonuses that come with games, but at times it's too hard to ignore the temptation.

The most recent battle of wills comes with Gamestop's bonus for Harvest Moon DS Cute. If you couldn't tell from the picture above, it's a plush cat! That may not seem like a big deal for many of you -- after all, what's another cheap stuffed animal? -- but here at DS Fanboy, we love cats (especially the "lol" kind). Maybe not as much as we love pugs, but we digress.

We like the Harvest Moon series anyway, so normally preordering this game wouldn't be an issue. Yet, since two Harvest Moon games are coming out pretty close to each other, we were hoping to spend our money on Island of Happiness instead. Cute is essentially the same game as Harvest Moon DS, except that the main character is a girl rather than a boy (plus, a few other minor additions). Island of Happiness, on the other hand, is a completely new game with a Lost in Blue meets Harvest Moon concept.

We probably won't waver in our decision to stick with Island of Happiness, but if you're a fan of the franchise and haven't played Harvest Moon DS yet, this preorder bonus might make the purchase a worthwhile one.

Friday Video: Black Cat vs Master Hand

Much like the final battles in the Super Smash Bros. games, this week's video has a scrappy young kitten fighting for his life against a mysterious giant hand, its owner off-camera. How does this relate to the Nintendo DS, you ask? Well, if you watch the background closely, you'll see someone completely oblivious to the ensuing brawl, too captivated by his DS.

We pride ourselves in our ability to find any excuse to post cats.

Australia-based Paper Plane Products is selling the cutest DS Lite pouches we've ever seen, their flaps fashioned after fattened cats and bunnies. Just look at those button eyes! And that pink nose! In addition to the cute mug, each case has a convenient handle, three cart pockets, and a button snap to keep everything secure. You can check out more photos past the break.

You'll pay a premium for this handmade look -- $49.99 per case. Shipping from Australia will also eat into your wallet, but the online shop has a lot of other adorable accessories that you can load your order with, like Lamb Lamb skins and card holders. Herding cats with Chat Noir DS

Chat Noir DS is not, as we initially assumed, a dark, brutal drama about an A/S/L gone wrong. No, it's a homebrew puzzle game in which you must keep a black cat from escaping the screen by blocking his avenues of escape.

The premise and presentation are simple, but outsmarting the restless kitten turns out to be a fun diversion, especially if you attach a ridiculous back story as to why you can't let him (or her) get away. Here are some of the possible plots we came up with for Chat Noir DS:
  • Trap the scrappy kitten before he dashes out of the bathroom (he ran right between your legs!) and eats your pizza
  • Corner the feline so you can dress him up in a top hat and bowtie
  • You really, really want to pet the little guy, but he just wants to run around and mess up your house
  • He's the only one who can beat the Ouendan 2 stage you're stuck on
  • If the kitty makes it out the door, he'll never come back home :'o(
You can stick Chat Noir DS on a flashcart or play it in an emulator, whichever is more convenient for you. if you're going to play it on your computer, though, you might as well just load up the original flash game in your browser.

Cheap stylus gifts that aren't really styli

Gaming sites are inundated with holiday gift guides at the end of the year, listing the best and most popular games that everyone pretty much already has (or knows about). Well, we're not going in for that this year. Our gift guide will help you find the best gifts in categories the other sites won't cover -- because we just made them up.

My secret addiction -- the one that has me wearing only long-sleeved shirts and brushing my teeth before coming home, all to hide its telling signs -- is stylus collecting. I can't get enough of these pen-shaped bits of plastic; I'm cuckoo for them, you could say. Every time I make a Play Asia purchase or collect a preorder bonus, I feel like I've lost another part of me, another vital fragment I'll never have again. I don't know what it feels like to be alive anymore.

I've long moved on from conventional styli, using anything I can get my anxious, shaking hands on, the crazier the better. How else do you think I managed to put together this gift guide for alternative styli? Thumb styli, extendable styli, styli with colorful mascots on them -- you name it, I've tried every single one of them, and they don't do a damn thing for me anymore. Forget about those nonsense accessories and read on for my NSFW roundup of styli presents that will change your life ... for the worse. Joys be thine, suckas.

Nintendo fails to announce Nintencats, SEGA steps in

We know what you're thinking, and yes, the mere fact that this post is related in some way to our feline friends is a good enough reason to break out the lolcats.

But we digress. Ever since the delightful Nintendogs launched and sold around a gazillion copies, we've been patiently waiting for a feline-based sequel, a follow-up that would undoubtedly attract the cat-loving half of the civilized world to Nintendo's handheld. Alas, "Nintencats" has (bafflingly) failed to emerge, so SEGA has dutifully decided to offer us Yume Neko DS, a game that allows players to pet, poke, and play with their cat in much the same way as we mucked around with our mutts in Nintendogs. It's hitting Japan next spring, though there's no news yet on a western localization.

Past the break, we've embedded a pair of trailers, one a demo of the game in action (worth a look, as the cats themselves are nicely animated), and the other a Japanese TV spot for the extremely sinister-looking "Yume Neko Smile," a cuddly toy spin-off from the game that probably comes to life at night to embark on bloodthirsty rampages, leaving nothing in its horrifying wake alive.

Adopt Petz Catz 2 for ten bucks

For today only, Amazon has Petz Catz 2 on sale at a discount price of $9.99. Ubisoft actually put together some adorable commercials for Catz 2 and other games in the Petz series. Nom nom nom past the post break for those short videos.

Sonic the Horrific Mutant Cat

We didn't think it possible to design a more reviling clone of Sonic the Hedgehog than Shadow, but as you can see above, someone actually managed to do it, and much to our surprise, it isn't Sega's fault (this time). The grotesque beast was sighted in the shoe section of a department store in China, chasing down children and frightening them into buying new sneakers. He holds his prey down with his giant left hand, forcing them to look straight into his menacing, pitch black eyes until they acquiesce.

Show and Tell: The namesake

You guys have a lot of Zelda stuff. Seriously, we posted your Zelda gear all last week and we're still hip deep in it. But there's no complaints -- we love to see what you have to show off, especially when it's an adorable kitty. We're big fans of felines around here, both with and without captions.

This particular kitty is named Zelda, and from the number of photos owner Seraph_X3 sent in, she is somewhat less elusive than her namesake. Also, more huggable. Check out a couple of full-sized pics after the post break.

So what do you have lying around your house? If it's gaming gear, we want to see it. From food to pets, from clothes to art, we're interested in everything you have with even the slightest touch of Nintendo flair. Snap some pics and send 'em to showmeit [at] dsfanboy [dot] com.

Love Cat Life shows love for dogs, too

Specifically, Nintendogs. And more specifically, the cash generated by Nintendogs. Forgive us for being cynical, but Love Cat Life does look exceedingly familiar. But for our (hypothetical) pet simulator money, Love Cat Life wins over Nintendo's masterpiece, for mostly hilarious reasons:
  • Simulated litterboxes
  • Riding a little cat-sized truck over a ramp
  • Meowing music game!
We started off being sarcastic, but we just convinced ourselves. It was the music game that did it.

And I think to myself, what a wonderful preorder bonus

Fans anticipating the release of It's a Wonderful World won't have just a limited edition DS Lite bundle to look forward to; Square Enix announced today that preordering the Shibuya-district RPG in advance of its July 27th release will also net gamers a miniature kitten to hitch onto your handheld.

The feline charm mimics Pochi, a stuffed cat that plays into Shiki Misaki's (IAWW's female lead) special attacks, and also doubles as a wipe to keep your DS screens free of dust and kitty litter. Pounce past the post break for some in-game screenshots of Pochi.

Dream a little Dream of Neko

Have you ever idly wanted to be a cat? Well, perhaps the felines dream about being you, as well -- at least, that's the story behind Dream of Neko, a new game headed to the DS. Neko, a kitten (how's that for an original name) who dreams of the freedom of humans, awakens one day to find that he's become one ... but it must not be all it's cracked up to be (we'll vouch for that), because Neko sets off on an epic quest to regain kittenhood. Hey, we're all about the good things in human life, like video games and steak, but sometimes, we'd just like to relax with a ball of string and a pillow as well. We can relate.

Dream of Neko
has a tentative third quarter release for Europe so far, and little else is known at this time.

More from the DS cat

Remember the cute, yet scary DS kitty? That little Lite-playing furball has been turning up all over, and the site where the picture originated features several other examples of adorable kitty antics. Unfortunately, it looks like this is the only Nintendo-themed set, but we have high hopes that kitty will someday again be tempted by the DS ... or that the owner will decide to encourage more pictures.
