Look out, Nintendo -- the N-Gage is coming (again)

Since failing in a spectacular fashion is so much fun that they wanted to do it again, Nokia is gunning hard for their second generation N-Gage, according to UK site Pocket Gamer. If you haven't been following the story, this time Nokia's not attempting to make a dedicated handheld-phone hybrid, but rather a platform for gaming that can be used with their N-series smart phones. Is that a better recipe for success? It will depend on the execution, of course, but apparently Nokia's been meeting with some big developers lately and they have plans to reveal the platform at next month's Game Developers Conference.

They are, obviously, fixing some of last round's mistakes; if there's no dedicated handheld and the service is supported by downloadable games, then gamers will have no reason to complain about having to completely dismantle the device just to change games. On the other hand, we figure it's probably safe to assume that most gamers with smart phones already have a handheld they love and cherish, so at best this may free up a pocket. What do you think, DS gamers? While a download service would certainly be a nice thing to have on our handheld (we're looking at you, Virtual Console), is the new N-Gage platform a threat to our dual-screened beauty?

1. Well if they can emulate to the quality of a N64 as per the DS, add a proper touch screen and proper interruption protocols (when you have to answer a call), maybe even a larger screen that they usually ship with with a higher resolution and WiFi capabilities and easy swappable game cards with some really fun NEW games as well as WiFi link up to the Wii then I don't think Nintendo has to worry in the very slightest.

2. I think Ninteno could make a killing if they got in on phone integration, I bet they could even beat out the iphone by just approaching it as a device with a phone in it, instead of a phone that can act as a bunch of devices.
It;s so close to a pda anyway, if the next gen just had 2 touch screens, a little slimmer, and a phone when it was in clamshell mode. You could have a simple original monochrome game boy screen, touch to dial. Backward compatible ds, empahsising pda software, with a phone.

3. They'll never get it right until they make cell phones with usable control pads and buttons. Are you listening, Nokia? It's so bloody obvious, yet you can't seem to grasp this very basic concept. There's no point in making games for a cell phone if nobody can actually play them.

4. This thing is about as much of a threat to the DS as a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Actually, the PB&J is probably more so as they're pretty good. mmmmmmmm.......peanut butter and jelly....

5. I think a new phone platform for gaming is complimentary to the DS, not competitive. I love my DS, but when I'm being dragged to the mall or on some other errand where I'll be wasting some time, I'm still not stuffing a DS in my pants pocket. I do keep a couple of fresh games I can pick up easily on my phone to pass the few minutes while my girl is in the dressing room. If the new N-Gage platform was gaming friendly, affordable and accessible I would certainly look at it to compliment my handheld gaming options.

6. Oh no! well, this looks like the end. How can the DS lite, which is barely selling as it is, stand up to the sheer might of the N-gage.
