Nintendo DS and the GBA successor

Nintendo DSNintendo has ushered in the new craze in handheld gaming with the Nintendo DS. Great games, solid battery life, and lots of third-party support. As the Gameboy Advance is nearing what seems to be the end of its life, it will be interesting to see how a two handheld strategy might work for Nintendo.

Though nothing is official, Nintendo has said that the DS is not a Game Boy replacement, rather, it is an expansion of the portable market. A Game Boy successor is expected by many within 1-2 years, and a preview unveiling of the system possibly by year's end.

So what say ye DS Fanboys? How would you like the Nintendo DS to interact, play, or get along with what may or may not be a future Game Boy?

1. I don't want my DS to interact with any Gameboy, present or future. I want my quirky touch-screen, microphone, dual-screened weirdness on the DS and I want my normal platformers, shooters, RPGs and what have you on the Gameboy, and I don't see any reason why the two would need to interact.

As for the next Gameboy, I'd be happy with something like the Gameboy Micro with perhaps some more power. There's still plenty of GBA games available that I've not got around to playing so I'm not bothered about when the next update comes along.

2. wtf!!

i don think they should introduce a new hanheld in the coming years. i mean the ds is doing fine and i wouldnt want to purchase another handheld.

3. Why do we need a new Game Boy? I think it's been proven that we've reached a great place with DS. Two screens and touch have taken us new and exciting places. PSP feels difficult to control without touch screen and GBA is reaching its limits as far as game variety goes. I can't imagine Nintendo would go and ruin all they've been working at for the past year by releasing their PSP when it's been shown that the way to get great games is to innovate.

4. I much prefer my GBA SP over the Micro. My SP fits in my purse just fine, and it's got built-in screen protection. While the backlight in the Micro may be brighter, the front-lit SP is just fine for 99% of the time. I already have to worry about protecting the screens on my cellphone and iPod... why worry about a Micro too?

5. I can't see Nintendo releasing a "GBA 2" for at least a couple of years, probably more. It just makes no sense to segregate the market like that. The DS is just now getting a good momentum going with a lot of good games because they've sold so many that developers are taking it seriously.

6. Actually i liked GBA (not SP) cos it's so comfortable to hold! And i find the size just nice (better than micro)! IMHO, better than the rest of the other handhelds of Nintendo. I just wish that the (new) GBA has a bright backlit screen and probably lose some weight. True, there's a micro out there alrdy..

7. Seeing how everyone wants small handhels nowadays, I can see why nintendo might make a very small "GBA 2" that had N64-esque graphics and port a bunch of N64 games on it.

However, I would rather play GoldenEye on a DS.

Besides, they could put the "GBA 2" games on the same type of cartridge and enable DS owners to play them, right?

...Check the ds and n64 specs the ds has better graphics then the n64.

but your ds/gba2 compatible software idea was pretty cool

9. Hows about in another year or two release an updated DS with the capability to play GameCube games as well as DS carts? The dimesions of the discs certainly lend themselves to portability. Leave the DS cartridge slot where it is and cram in a slot-loading CD drive in the upper portion of the DS....Voila, you've got a completely new device with a ginormous launch library and other features which cause all kinds of moistness in ur pants....

11. For the next game boy I want to see it really small (think Micro size or slightly bigger), then knowing Nintendo they'll add some nice features, mainly motion sensor, detecting tilt and so forth. Couple that with better graphics (not neccesary but would be nice) and you got a killer system.

12. replacing a system selling as hotly as the DS within 2 years, especially considering it's graphical, touch, mic, and other interface hardware are perfectly serviceable, would be completely retarded of Nintendo. I've read in multiple places that people would like another 2D machine like the gba... umm, the DS does SPLENDID 2D (Super Princess Peach or Castlevania anyone?). With the DS Nintendo has learned that innovation can lead a path to massive success (and monetary returns!) so I wouldn't expect another "traditional" system from them anytime in the near future.

Nintendo also said that the DS was not a gameboy replacement before a lot of the major system sellin games came out....

13. I don't believe that the GBA will have an exact successor.

My prediction:

The official announcement will happen at E3 in 2008 or 2009 with release for the holidays. Instead of an announcement for just a new gameboy or a new DS, I expect them to announce replacements for both at the same time. The new GBX will have a bigger screen (think something 16x9, almost to rival the PSP) and the new DS+ will have the same screen as it's top screen. The new DS+ will have the same bottom screen as the current. They'll both have the same CPU at the same speed, and they'll share a cartridge format. Games will come in two flavors, DS+ only (think nintendogs or kirby's canvas curse) and GBX (think Mario Kart DS or Dawn of Sorrow but you loose the map screen on the GBX). I think both will include many features and enhancements. Tilt control, rumble, analog sticks, and microphone will be standard across both units. The DS+ will have the second bottom screen with the touch control.

14. I seriously doubt a new Game Boy will be out in the next two years considering the huge success of the DS, but i do expect a new version of the DS out in the next year or so.

I expect the Micro and SP will continue to be the main Game Boy choices until 2009-2010 at the earliest.

The only other option I could see is a blending of the Game boy and DS lines and the next gameboy being a 2 screen machine

15. the gameboy and ds are 2 different things, all new ds's will have the same innovaative and weird 2 screen/ touch screen features but new gba's will just be the same but with better graphics to appeal to other people.

I believe the new gba will have gamecubeish grafix and will play mini discz, smaller then psp UMD's but for now no new handhelds are needed. I mean come on, Ds has hit around 13 million worldwide and psp 7 million. Every i kno sed ds wuld do crap but it smashed psp. i fink next years E3 shuld be the unveiling of a new handhaled

16. i don't think Nintendo will ever do a disc based handheld, I don't think they would ever make a portable that played GC mini DVDs either. They hate load times.

I wouldn't mind seeing a new GBA based on the ARM9 (the DS's faster processor) using the DS carts. A nice little firmware update to the DS( maybe some PDA features too) and you now have GBX support. That's the only thing I think that wouldn't be oversaturation. I think it needs to be DS compatible to make sense. It's too early for another new Nintendo system. They will focus 100% on the Revolution as their market reputation depends on it. The GBA and DS already outperform the PSP and they need to build the momentum they have with those systems.
