DS Daily: WiFi woes

We've spent a little time talking about the state of the DS online, but only as it relates to interfacing with people you know. What about the rest? Every Tuesday during Game Night, it seems someone can't get a good signal or can't maintain a stable connection. So of course we wondered, just how is the DS WiFi working out for you? Are you lucky enough to have a pretty stable connection for your DS? Have you had trouble with any games?

1. btw, where can I get that shirt?

2. I haven't had too much trouble connecting. but when I try to hook up with other friendcode people there are hiccups.

Posted at 12:12PM on Feb 10th 2007 by Uno

3. At home my WiFi is stable but as far as friend codes and stuff, I don't really know enough people to make good use of it. Overall I find the system pretty flawed and geared towards scared parents. You should have one username accross Nintendo WiFi so friends can easily find you on DS and Wii. This whole id number friend code crap sucks.

4. I agree with James, except on the stable WiFi.

I have yet to be able to connect to more than 3 people, even on gamenights. I bought a Router that the NWFC page gave 5 stars and I have yet to overcome he dreaded 86420 error. (Yes, I memorized the damned error code).

I set all ports forwarded to the DS, I even DMZ'ed it, and still, no luck.

5. My biggest complaint personally is that I wish the range was a little big bigger. My man-person enjoys networking all the things in the house together (he's like an intertube katamari), and everything else we have that's wireless laughs at the range on the DS. I practically have to sit in a bed of hidden wires in the corner of the living room if I want to play online. Game Nights are pretty funny here. I'm perched on the arm of the sofa balancing my laptop and my DS.

6. no problems here. using a belkin wireless g plus mimo router and has never disconnected.

Posted at 2:14PM on Feb 10th 2007 by f82black51

7. No problems with lag, except for minor collision detection, never had any problems with connecting with friends (but I only have one, although i have a bunch of Metroid Prime Hunters Rivals)

All the problems i've had have been on MY end of the spectrum. My Original Westell Modem/Router (that came with the Verizon DSL) refused to hand out an IP to my DS, so i had to use a static IP, then the Westell's Wireless kept freezing all the time, so i bought a Linksys wireless router to get better range and better packet %, but that Linksys has the exact same IP as the Westell, so now i live in the dark realm of IP Conflict :(

8. My main problem with DS WiFi is finding games to play on it. Tetris would be the most likely candidate for me, but I haven't been able to pick it up yet.

Posted at 4:24PM on Feb 10th 2007 by JC Fletcher

9. I'm one of the disadvantaged few relegated to the outskirts of civilization and stuck on dial-up, so I got the USB Wifi Adapter (thankfully the "broadband required" warning is bunk). As long as I'm not doing anything else online, there is no lag. Ironically, the only time a game drops is when my friends' routers crap out.

I count my lucky stars.

10. I use the nintendo wifi connector that a friend gave me.(since he´s too busy playing with his Wii..lawl)
The only two things that REALLY need to change:

The Friend Code System. I agree with James S. from comment 3. Usernames > FC.

Hackers. (And the worst part is that these n00bs cant get kills even with infinite deathalt on MPH or finish first on MKDS. U n00bs are a waste of time..and missiles.)

Anybody that still plays MPH without hacks is welcome for a challenge. My FC is: 5111 7979 2339.

11. @ Nushio (#4) & Mr Khan (#7) I have a Linksys WRT54GL (aka WRT54G version 4.0) wireless router and it's been pretty good to me (just a recommendation). It has good range, and it auto-assigns IP's using DHCP. No port forwarding required.

@ FPS Spectre (#10) I would love to play MKDS online with someone I know won't cheat or snake (hopefully). The whole reason I stopped playing was the rampant snaking. I'm gonna try and make a list of my WiFi friend codes on my blog @ http://mcmlxxxiv.blogspot.com/

12. I got myself the USB connector, and despite the somewhat dodgy installation process (certain hardware/software configs can mess it up badly), it's worked well for me.

I tend to have the most troubles getting into a game - once I'm there, disconnects are rare... but to get into a game, e.g. during game night, with lots of players - tricky.

13. I have been unimpressed with DS WiFi play from day one. I'm not bothered by the cheats so much as the simple fact that finding a game is such a chore, even when the rules and players are totally random. Other online games have done this for *years* with no problems at all, yet somehow Nintendo can't make it a smooth and flexible experience.

I'm still glad to have it though, as jacked up as it is.

Posted at 12:32AM on Feb 11th 2007 by Jason

14. Over a year later and I still have never had my DS online. The only place I play is at home and since I'm stuck on dial up with no option for broadband where I live I just can't play. I've hear what Xian is saying that it is possible to get online with dial up but even my dial up is terrible so I have never even tried.

15. The Wi-Fi works great for me I have perfect signal throughout my whole house.

Problems:
1. Other people that lag on Wi-fi terribly, we need to have a way of seeing other people signal power so we can tell who is lagging.

2. Friend Codes: I don't mind the idea, I just hate the fact we have to have a different friend code for each game, why not just have a friend code for the system that we you can also interchange games.

3. I hate how both persons have to have each others friend codes to do anything together; I think we should at least be able to message them or something to ask them to be added to lists.

4. Communication: I really hate not being able to message or chat with people over Wi-Fi, it just adds to strategy over Wi-Fi and makes it more fun.

Posted at 5:10PM on Feb 11th 2007 by T.K.

16. 4. Is a limitation discussed by Nintendo ages ago. It's something that cannot be overcome.

3. Most games you can have random matches or still do stuff like trade or coop without knowing any other people's friend codes.

Note you should always make sure your firewall is comptabile with the usb connector certain free service ones are not. Make sure you have the most update firmware and software for the routers as well as the nintendo wifi usb connector as well.

Certain ISPs do not work with the usb connector although the hack that works with AOL may get around the others.

99% of the time it's on the users end that is the problem with the DS wifi.

Posted at 11:37PM on Feb 11th 2007 by nintendofan

17. I've never had an issue with my Wifi. I have had other people idle out of Mario Kart but nothing juge.

Posted at 9:13PM on Feb 12th 2007 by Qwikstreet

18. Aw....i feel sry for you, beacuse i have exelent contections, i have the new $150 Cisco Systems Router and i can mantain a "Green 3 Bar" when im in my living room which is like 30 feet away, the only problems i have, is when i conect to friend codes to animal crossing or clubhouse games, it takes like 5 min to conect to the WFC server.

Posted at 11:10PM on Feb 13th 2007 by Rockutxz

19. @nintendofan

"99% of the time it's on the users end that is the problem with the DS wifi."

Making a device with weak compatibility is Nintendo's fault, not the users'. Besides, I have zero compatibility problems: my complaints are about the services offered. It's like roullette getting a game going. Will I be playing against 1, 2, or 3 people? Who knows! Even when you're looking for matches among friends there is no way to coordinate exactly who you play with. And forget organized team play! There are too many basic, fundamental things that DS online cannot do.
