Just find a review site you tend to agree with and see what they say.
My drug of choice is RPG Fan. And they seemed to love it, so it is fairly likely that I will enjoy it.
And the rule is anything at 60 or better on MetaCritic is worth checking out. And Sonic Chronicles is at....78 I think. So that's promising.

Here's a quick review of Sonic, it's crap. Feels like a budget title, really, some of the sloppiest programming I've seen on the DS to date. Bad transitions, framerate problems, horrible sound effects in battles, sloppy and inconsistent graphic work (especially the 2d stuff for the menus and "tutorials"). It could turn out to be a decent game, but I won't be able to bring myself to find out.

Just picked up Sonic Chronicles today. I got a hold of all three special styli too. They aren't that great, and don't look like they'll fit in the DS' stylus holder, but still.
I have to beat WarioWare: Touched! and Metroid Prime: Hunters before I start playing Sonic though. Just on of my habits: beat the games I haven't beaten before starting a new one.
