Brain Training doesn't help old brains after all

For those of us hoping to clutch onto a DS and listen to the sage advice of Brain Age's Dr. Floaty Head (his real name's so hard to remember these days) in order to lessen the rate of our inevitable mental decline, a recent article in the Wall Street Journal's science journal is sure to come as bad news. According to a recent study, constant mental exercise does nothing to slow down the rate of cognitive decline.

Timothy Salthouse of the University of Virginia notes that "there is no convincing empirical evidence that mental activity slows the rate of cognitive decline," a message that stands somewhat opposed to Nintendo's Brain Age campaign. "The research I reviewed is just not consistent with the idea that engaging in mentally stimulating activities as you age prevents or slows cognitive decline." While the rate of mental erosion is labeled as constant by the study, it suggests that the minds that remain sharp are merely dropping from a higher point. The higher you start, the longer it takes you to hit bottom.

The mental usefulness of the innocent crossword puzzle also comes under attack assault fire, with Salthouse concluding that there is no evidence that habitual puzzle players experience "a slower rate of age-related decline in reasoning." What's a five-letter word for bummer?

Still, the article points out (perhaps obviously so) that the greatest benefit of games like Brain Age is that the constant training improves an adult's ability to perform the given task well. One thing's for sure--we'll soon be glorified experts at saying "Blue!"

1. Either way it is still better than watching TV!

2. So what? It's still a cool game.

3. Actually, I really don't care if it helps my brain or not (concidering that i'm in my teens). I just hope that Dr. Kawashima is in the next smash bros. But they shouldn't call his character Dr. Kawashima, they sholud call him, the pocket Asian.

4. The article make it seem like this game is supposedly a cure for Alzheimers. If I remember correctly, all the game was supposed to really do is just (re)sharpen the players motors skills. And regular practice with the game, just like any other skill at any age, will increase quickness (or sharpness) in response to a mathematical question (or other genere in the game).

5. I fully saw this coming. Seriously... Although I never remember Ninty asserting it was a miracle cure for anything. And isnt there some nursing home in Japan using this game to detect the onsite[sic] of Althsheimers [sic]? ?? ?

6. Yes America, stop playing these innovative educational games, go back to watching ad-filled garbage programming on TV.

7. Nice one Will.
To be completely honest it wouldn't suprise me in the slightest to find out this was some ploy by some form of competition to take away some of Brain Age's thunder. I don't see exactly how this professor proved his "theory" about Brain Age. This shouldn't be seen as a blow to Brain Age at all. When two opinions colide, everybody takes sides and we can't prove that one person (the guy who did all his brain age research) or the other (this dude) is write or wrong....

8. Wow big deal, this isn't the first time someone's done a research paper on mental activity and mental decline. I'm sure if I browsed around my school's journal database I could find a number of articles both supporting and countering this guy's work. It's all in who is doing the funding.

9. The thing here is that, once a gain, we have "according to a recent study." Meaning *one* paper came out that reached a certain conclusion, and we're apparently not getting any substantial commentary on the validity of its methodology or how it fits in with other studies in the same field. For some reason the news media loves to pretend that one new study means that the whole world should now move over to a certain way of thinking about the topic.

Besides, Brain Age is fun.

10. There's about a dozen other studies that contradict what this guy says. But in fairness most of the studies were done with musical instruments. According to many, learning a musical instrument slows the deterioration of mental functions which naturally happens with age.

Maybe they should be boasting about Electroplankton's boost to mental agility.

11. I was about to post a comment, but all of you guys who did before me, took all my arguments.
Just forget these haters (the pseudo-science journalists). They're just pissed that we don't read more of their crap, and play SUDOKUs on our cute little portable devices...

12. I've been playing Brain Age right when I wake up, and it does help to wake you up. Instead of the normal haze I'm in for the half-hour after I'm awake, I do some training and play Sudoku and I'm almost instantly alert...
