We've had a few discussions about homebrew in the course of our daily topics, but there's something we haven't asked that we're curious about. What do you go for? Are you interested in homebrew games? We're not talking pirated games here, but original material created by armchair developers. Or are you more about using homebrew to expand your DS beyond the limits of gaming? We suspect that more of you are into the latter, but we've been wrong before!

(Page 1)2. DS Homebrew is crippled compared to what the PSP can do. Don't get me wrong, I don't even like the PSP but I acknowledge it's superirority for homebrew devs. Ah well...

3. ssuk - I'm curious as to how the DS homebrew is crippled in comparison to PSP homebrew as you say. Can you give specific examples? I don't doubt you, but this information might help me decide which system to start developing for.

4. Emulation is big one for me. I play NES and original Gameboy games on my DS.

5. haha, I'd rather develop games on it. I'm still studying right now. Cool thing is that my school is planning on getting a DS dev kit n stuff. As for using homebrew, there's some really cool apps that I've found and want to try... but I have no money to get me a homebrew kit... T_T

6. I just use ScummVM. Oh, and I would use NetHack if I could get the blasted thing to work! I just get a nice garbled screen when it starts

7. My favorite sites for DS homebrew news & downloads are:
http://dev-scene.com/
http://drunkencoders.com/ (get it? homebrew? as in home-brewed alcohol? thus the coders are drunken? ha ha)

8. While the power of the PSP would, in theory, provide for some more developed/capable homebrew apps, I think the ease with which you can make your DS homebrew-ready (e.g., using a cart vs. hacking the firmware ) and the touchscreen make the DS a really viable homebrew platform. In addition, the clamshell design and especially the DS Lite form-factor make it much better, in my opinion, for doubling as a PIM or some other productive use. That being said, I bought my DS to play games, and would probably play homebrew games more than I would use the DS for non-gaming stuff.

9. I mainly use my DS to listen to music, watch movies, and you a picture viewer to look at my city map for directions. Well, its mostly music, if you checkout homebrew like moonshell it lets you play music, watch movies, and view text/pics. Also, I occasionally use DSorganize in that its PDA setup allows me to write down work for the week and what not. Also, there are tons of homebrew out there that does many things like MSN messenger or see what the weather is...
A good place to go for the best flash cart would be here:
http://gbatemp.net/index.php?act=home
They do reviews on the best flashcart and gives you news on the latest homebrew, there is even a topic on there on how to run import gamecube games on the Wii! Plus the DS is much cheaper and easier to develop for than the PSP...

10. @ #9 stinky,
I'd reccomend the m3 ds simply as its the most easy to use out of all flashcards. You just drag and drop roms without patching and since it uses removable storage, it works with the mac.

11. I usually have Tetris Attack DS (the older version with the ripped graphics and sounds), Lemmings DS, AmplituDS (Amplitude for DS with chiptunes), and World of Sand (a beta DS version of the popular Falling Sand game).

Thanks for the suggestion. As I understand it then with the m3 ds simply, I can just drag and drop a ROM image onto the m3 "disk" and they will just work? As for how I will get the ROM images, I don't know; I'd guess there's no Mac software to make them from my games, so I will most likely try to borrow a Windows-using friend's computer - I will only have to do this once. The ROM images made by such software are all I need? (1. Use ROM image making software that comes with m3 on someone's Windows computer to make images of my games, 2. Copy ROM image to my Mac, 3. drag and drop image to m3 "disk."......) Am I on the right track? Thanks and sorry to be such an idiot

13. I'm interested in homebrew games and apps, and I'm interested in compiling all of my game ROMs onto one flash cartridge for convenience. I've read a lot of info on this and I'll it's done for me is confuse me (I'm a newbie to all of this). Can someone suggest a specific flash cartridge that I should get? I should mention that I use Mac OSX and don't have access to windows. Thanks for any help.

15. @#1 (I'm slow to respond today) - it's coming! But first, we're bringing in another new thing.

16. I'm looking into getting an M3 Simply/R4 cart to play my NDS games I already own as well as some of the free homebrew games. DSMidiWifi also looks very interesting to me.
Are there any good graphical web browsers available for homebrew or are they all just text based? I'm in the US and I'm not getting my hopes up on Opera being released.

1. I'm still waiting for DSFanboy's Guide to Homebrew articles which were proposed a month or two ago. I'm more interested in playing homebrew than making homebrew, though both are intriguing topics.
Either way, I won't invest a dime until I know what I'm getting myself into.
