It's becoming more and more common for games to require or expect you to play every day; quite a few of the big sellers on the DS encourage daily gameplay, in fact. Frankly, we're hesitant to say that we really like that. Expected every day is one thing, but Animal Crossing and Nintendogs seem to take it pretty far. In the former, you often find yourself gently scolded by the other inhabitants, and in the latter ... by not playing, you are starving puppies and are therefore a bad person. That's just harsh. But if you really enjoy a game, then perhaps the every day requirement isn't quite so onerous. We've seen a few towns in AC:WW that were lovingly crafted and maintained, day after day, for impressive lengths of time. And while we admire that sort of dedication, we just may not have it, and no one wants to be thought of as the person who starves puppies. So Nintendogs? Not for us, not in the long run. When it comes to these daily games, what's your take?

If there's enough new gameplay for me each day, then I'm all for it, but when a game gets repetitive, and you finish your daily tasks in about 10 minutes...its just not the same.
So far with AC/WW, I'm enjoying it; but I can see the time soon when I just leave it for a week and come back to see that my neighbours have turned to cannibalism in my absence..

"Daily" games like that annoy me, as I travel a lot. How about a 'weekly' game? Depending on how much you play, it adjusts itself to go slower... Animals taking one day to decide to pack up and leave in AC is evil. I miss one day, and my villager... GONE.

My wife and I share Animal Crossing, so that doubles our chances that at least someone will play. Though we don't play everyday, we've just gotten use to the fact that people will come and go, and our town will never look more than it is. Nintendogs pisses me off because I like the concept, but I'm not going to play everyday, and that game is VERY unrewarding when you miss a day.

I've been playing AC:WW since december and I still enjoy it but I do wish people wouldn't pack up and leave so fast. There are times when I just go on, make sure noboby is leaving and leave.

I don't like feeling forced to play a game every day. I play when I can and don't need to be 'scolded' when I've been busy in the real world. When I jump into a game, I'm trying to get away from all the negativity out there.

I really love AC:WW, but I get insanely busy with work, and forget about it half the time. Well, I did, back when I was still playing it. I'd love it if there was a vacation option or something, so you could just leave it for a week and come back. Buuuuut, I guess that would defeat the purpose.

Yeah, I played ACWW for well, pretty much every day for over a year. In the end it became less of a game, and more of a flower watering chore i could do while waking up / having my morning turd (because you all really wanted to know that. Lets not talk about the pavlovian reaction my bowels developed to the game music).
What really irked me is that missing one day meant pretty much all your flowers went brown and had to be watered...
A few days ago i realised "dude... wtf am i doing?" and just couldnt be bothered playing anymore. No doubt all my flowers are dead by now.

I sold AC:WW along with my DS Phat..to help pay for a Wii. Then I started missing the DS and had to get the pink DS Lite, so now I'm missing AC:WW...kinda. I really loved this game, but I found myself feeling guilty every time I missed a visit to my house from one of the characters, or was too busy to participate in a fishing tournament. Maybe I'll hold out for MySims, but maybe not. As for Nintendogs, it sounded like a dream come true for me coz i always wanted a puppy, but I only played for a month or so. At least with AC:WW if you were busy you could just stop in for 5 minutes, but Nintendogs just laid too much of a guilt trip on me.

I just don't have time for this. Brain Age and Picross have also this kind of daily routine, but it is more rewarding and less demanding. If you don't play one day, you won't have data for that day. No problem there.

That vacation idea for AC is a great idea!!! i don't feel guilty about missing trips or anything it's just i dont want certain people in my town so sometimes i just go on for 10 minutes. My gf plays probably every other day and is ok bc it takes 2 days for somebody to move.

I don't want to HAVE to pick up my DS.
I'm going to admit that it's been months and I'm still not done FF III yet, but then again I'm an adult of 40 and I have other concerns and interests.
That, and I like to have the TIME to roll with FF for a while, which I can't count on anymore.
If I had a Nintendog the ASPCSA (2nd S for simulated) would have taken the cart away and I'd still be paying fines.
I tend to want a quick game of Backgammon or Solitaire too, like when I'm waiting for my wife at the doc's office.
My age probably skews your data a bit, but what the heck, there it is.

I was just thinking about this lately and I decided that I really hate games that have this dynamic. I really wanted to like AnimalCrossing or even Harvest Moon but the constant up-keep and daily chores just make the games annoying for me to play. I am really against any game or online system that requires the player to log-in daily, it just becomes another hassle and doesn't seem fun imo.

It's a terrible idea to FORCE you to play. I hate the concept. The idea of continuous real-time gameplay, like in AC, is great. But demanding that a person play every day is ridiculous. I don't own a DS yet (yea, I know, I'm on DS Fanboy, but I'm getting one soon, so I figured I should read up, just like on Wii Fanboy...) but I have a question: Does the DS have an internal clock that can be saved? i.e. could the DS have the ability of saving the last time it was turned on or off? That way, it could penalize you if you've played recently, but haven't played a specific game for a long time.
For example, if your Animal Crossing game hasn't been played in a week, but you played another game on the DS yesterday, it could do something, but if you haven't had your DS on SINCE playing Animal Crossing, it would not affect your gameplay.
Granted, this will still annoy some people, but it's better than the way it seems to be now...

OH, I agree. Sometimes, I'll have only enough time to do the maintenance (feed/water dog, pick weeds/water flowers) before my gaming window is up. I never get past that to the fun stuff. When I think back on the time I spent, I don't remember anything but doing digital chores. Yuck.
