DS Daily: Buttons

Who knew they were even there?
One hears so much hubbub regarding the various input capturing systems of the DS (touch-screen, microphone) that one forgets the damn thing has buttons. Eight plus a D-pad, to be precise. The DS is, in fact, Nintendo's first handheld to feature more than two standard face buttons at all, a la the SNES.

Are you happy with the buttons? Are there too many, too few? Are they hard to reach, and are they too clicky? We like the clicks. (Our parents communicated to us exclusively in Morse Code.) Expound upon thy ministrations!

1. I'm happy with the buttons. The game I've been playing the most lately is Animal Crossing: Wild World, and I tend to use the buttons/d-pad for fishing and moving around, while I use the touch screen more for inventory management and entering text.

2. I always press the right button every time i turn my DS on/off. I find that a bit annoying. But then again.. I've only had my DS for 3 days.. I might acquire the skill later..?

and by the way.. Im going to tokyo next week, is there any especially cool item/game/foo for my DS I should look for over there? Thankful for all the tips I can get..

3. well I like the buttons. A lot of times, I prefer using buttons over the touch screen. In certain games, the touch screen feels gimmicky. But the touch screen is pretty cool when done right.

4. I think that the buttons on the ds lite are flimsy and weak.

5. Let's put it this way: it'd be mighty hard to play Castlevania* without the dpad, ABXY and triggers. It'd also be hard to play Trauma Center with the buttons. They've each got their purposes

6. Thanks for using my picture with no credit given. ;)

I think the buttons are just ducky. I wouldn't complain if they were a tad bit bigger, but not a huge deal.

7. I like the buttons, but every time I take L1L2 only handling the DS ... its not good ...

8. I love buttons.

9. The buttons are good but the clicky start button annoys me on starting up FFTA.

10. Ergonomically speaking, the Gamecube had the best controller for most games (most games should only have 1 or 2 dominant buttons).
Although the Gamecube has the worst controller for games that rely on equal use of all buttons (fighting games for example) and those aren't abundant on the DS.

So I think they should change the layout for the next iteration.

Like this for example:

11. I like the resistance and everything on the DS Lite. Really the only complaint I have is that the Start and Select buttons are a bit too small and are placed in a sub par area.

12. The buttons are adequate if a little small, but the dpad is painfully small. My thumb hurts after about a half hour.

13. I like the SNES style buttons, since I've always loved the diamond-shaped four button design (SNES, PS1 and PS2, Xbox controller S...). It's the best design I've ever used, and seems to work well for my lefty freind.

My biggest complaint is the D-pad, actually - it just doesn't feel as solid as the GBA SP one. That, and the palm-killing corners on the Lite. If they were copying the SNES buttons, couldn't they at least copy that wonderful slightly curved desing too?

14. I think the button configuration is great, and the buttons on the Lite are a lot better than the ultra-clicky ones on the original DS -- they could stand to be a little bigger, but I'm used to them, no big deal. I'm also perfectly happy with the SNES configuration, I'm glad we got two more face buttons, using L and R to cycle through commands worked okay for GBA games but it was a pain.

15. I have a DS Lite so all my opinions regard that model:

The four main face buttons are fine, I have no problem with them whatsoever.

Start and Select are far too small but they're hardly used so I can overlook them.

L and R feel great but they tend to be too easy to hit accidentally (which turns into a minor problem with a portable system).

The D-pad is where I have the most trouble. Trying to move diagonally is a real pain. There are times when it nearly feels impossible. Plus, my thumb seems to slip too easily on it.

Of course, all of this is a moot point since my favorite games primarily use touchscreen controls.

16. The start/select buttons are too clicky and the shoulder buttons are a little weak. My L button is kinda falling off.
