DS Fanswag: End of the Year Blowout!

It's been a good year, but sadly, like all those other years, it must come to an end. Before we roll out the red carpet for 2008, however, we wanted to give 2007 the send-off it deserves -- and what better way to do that than by offering up huge prize packs for our loyal readers? All you have to do is leave a comment on this very post telling us which DS model(s) you own, between now and December 26. The giveaway closes that night at 11:59 p.m. EST, and we'll announce the winners, chosen in a random drawing, on December 27. You may only enter once per day, and as usual, entries are limited to legal U.S. residents age 18 and older. Please check the official rules for any other questions.

But enough of the details -- let's get to the prize packages!

Five games to buy for people you hate

Gaming sites are inundated with holiday gift guides at the end of the year, listing the best and most popular games that everyone pretty much already has (or knows about). Well, we're not going in for that this year. Our gift guide will help you find the best gifts in categories the other sites won't cover -- because we just made them up.

Do you just love handing out the most horrific holiday gifts? If you're the kind of person who actually tucks sticks and coal into the stocking of a loved one on Christmas Eve, then this list is for you. It's all about the worst of the worst, the bottom of the barrel -- the games you would shudder to find on your own shelf, or worse, tainting your DS.

Before you ask -- yes, we do love to see you cringe and suffer at the horrors we spring on you. Aren't we sweet?

DS Fanboy Review: Hannah Montana: Music Jam

I've never tried to review a game that was as obviously, emphatically Not for Me as Hannah Montana: Music Jam. The game is pretty clearly targeted at fans of the Disney Channel series, a category to which I, sadly, do not belong. More broadly, the game is targeted at little girls, a larger group that still does not include me. Disney Channel games are a completely different world of gaming with which most of us have no experience. They are a mystery that, for the most part, we don't care to solve.

But Hannah Montana: Music Jam showed signs of quality that shocked us in initial screenshots. As moony as we were over Ubisoft's Jam Sessions, here was a game that seemed to do all that Jam Sessions could do and more, buried under a poisonous license. In the end, Music Jam doesn't hold up to that excellent product, but, provided you are in the target audience, it isn't as exploitively, lazily terrible as we imagine most licensed children's games to be. Parts of it are pretty good. But in the end, there are so many great kid-friendly games on the DS that lack the license but are just better.

DS releases for the week of October 15th

We're not ashamed to admit that we're somewhat excited about Hannah Montana: Music Jam. Oh, not because of Hannah herself or anything, but because this very random little title just looks like it could put Jam Sessions to shame. You thinking of at least renting it? It's okay to admit it. We won't tell. If not, there's plenty more to choose from this week:
  • Avatar: The Last Airbender -- The Burning Earth
  • The Bee Game
  • Disney Princess: Magical Jewels
  • Fish Tycoon
  • Flash Focus: Vision Training in Minutes a Day
  • Fullmetal Alchemist: Trading Card Game
  • Hannah Montana: Music Jam
  • Power Rangers: Super Legends
  • Prism: Light the Way
  • Sea Monsters: A Prehistoric Adventure
  • Tony Hawk's Proving Ground
And for the GBA:
  • Avatar: The Last Airbender -- The Burning Earth
Check out the rest of the world's major markets after the jump.
