GDC08: Inchworm: Mario Paint meets Photoshop

It has been almost a year since we heard anything new about Fatbits Pocket Painter, and we were beginning to worry that the project had been abandoned. While homebrewers already have Colors! to satisfy their DS-digital-painting needs, we really wanted to see what Bob Sabiston, the programmer behind Waking Life and A Scanner Darkly's Rotoshop software, had come up with.

Dismissing concerns of its halted development, the painting and animation application has appeared at GDC, this time under the name Inchworm. Along with its reintroduction comes a new site packed with tutorial videos and user-uploaded samples/flipbooks. Artists can easily create and share their work online, all with a robust selection of drawing and editing tools.

One unique feature we spotted in Inchworm is the ability to draw under a painting without having to create and move around new layers. Very useful for animation, we hear!

We're not sure if Inchworm has found a publisher yet, but we hope someone helps this program hit the mainstream market. Bob Sabiston definitely sees potential in the software: "If people can make money selling math and brain teasers to kids, imagine how popular a program that lets you draw and make cartoons [would be]!"

DIY DS Lite, minus some functionality

... Just boring stuff like playing games and existing in three dimensions. Other than that, this tutorial from reader Jillian S will show you how to make your very own DS Lite. Picture. In Photoshop.

Jillian's instructions are clear and logical, with example images throughout. You'll probably end up learning a bit about Photoshop as you go along, and, if you do well, you'll end up with an image that looks like you spent seconds searching the Internet for product images. You'll know, however, that this particular product image held a price in blood, sweat, and tears repetitive stress injuries.

We love the kinds of exceedingly detailed tutorials that people online put together for various random tasks, for no reason at all other than maybe boredom and a genuine desire to share ... that one task. Without this compulsion, there would be no GameFAQs, for one thing.

We also love the above in-progress picture of a DS with no screens and no interface. It could get a lot of use for mocking up fake DS successors.

The hows and whys of the fake Golden Sun screens

Many of you were heartbroken to discover that the Golden Sun III news floating around last week just might be less-than-real. Well, we hate to break it to you, but the creator has 'fessed up to fanning the flames of fan hopes everywhere. Vooks snagged an interview with the fellow behind the fake and asked the question we were all interested in as well: why? Was it a mean-spirited ploy to dash the hopes of Golden Sun fans? Not at all, says creator Opium. Instead, he hoped to foster discussion about the Golden Sun franchise and get people showing support for the property in the hopes that Camelot might take notice of just how desperate folks are for a new game. He also timed the fake's release carefully, hoping that with the E3 crush, it would get caught up as just another piece of news without people looking too far into whether or not the screens were real -- and it certainly seemed to work, as we saw Golden Sun III cropping up all over the place.

As for the how of the thing, Opium cooked up the shots using images from Golden Sun: The Lost Age in Photoshop, and with the aid of a friend, used ninja homebrew skills to get the images to display on his DS. The result was fairly convincing ... and if it happens to help prod developer Camelot into getting to work, then we'll have to be wary around trade shows, as other uber fans might just have to follow in Opium's Photoshopping footsteps.

DS Daily: The best Nintendo-inspired photo manips

Nintendo's iconic characters and systems make excellent fodder for the funniest of the funny that this series of tubes can offer. O rly, you ask? Ya rly, we reply, let us show you them. From the head of Dr. Kawashima to the DS and its inherent money-printing abilities, Nintendo is a big part of the image macro canon. Even the execs don't escape unscathed. In this world, Iwata is a pimp, Reggie will beat you down, and Miyamoto? Well, he's just the man. Did you get your ass kicked and your name taken when a bom zal droppen? Not our problem.

And then there are the Pokemans -- the personal power animals (after cats) of all Photoshop users, leading them all on a spiritual journey into lolz. Your favorites: show us them.

Fatbits Pocket Painter, Mario Paint for the DS

Having created Rotoshop, the software behind uniquely-animated films like Waking Life and A Scanner Darkly, Bob Sabiston is no stranger to new ways of manipulating media. His latest project, Fatbits Pocket Painter, takes advantage of the Nintendo DS' hardware features to create both pixel-based and vector-based illustrations.
The DS' top screen shows the entire canvas while the touchscreen displays a close-up view for editing.

Fatbits won't replace your copy of Adobe Photoshop, but with features like color palette mixing, variable thickness paintbrushes, and opacity sliders, the program is a lot more sophisticated than MS Paint. The application even supports an animation mode and playback for recorded sound effects (via DS mic) just like Mario Paint. Users will be able to share their complete creations or works-in-progress by uploading them to a web server with the DS' WiFi feature.

While Nintendo is aware of the project, there are no cemented plans for a commercial release. Sabistan admits that he might eventually cast the program loose for the homebrew community to play with if he is not able to find a publisher. For now, a brief user manual and a gallery of images created with Fatbits are available.
