Bargain Quests and a Cheaper Fantasy

Looking for a DS RPG, but Square-Enix's sky-high prices have you eying those Volume 9 DS Games carts from across the pond? Bat away those temptations to take to the seas and don an eye patch; consider these Amazon deals instead!

Up until tonight, Amazon is offering copies of Final Fantasy III for almost half the game's usual price, marking down the 3D remake to $16.99. If Dragon Quest spin-offs are more your thing, DQM: Joker and Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime are also featured with sub-$20 sales, and those markdowns should stay up while stocks last. Those games should keep you busy for weeks, and you didn't even have to spend £6,000!

Dragon Quest IV and others playable at TGS

It's nice to see that even though Nintendo won't have a booth at the Tokyo Game Show this year, our favorite handheld will still be properly represented at the convention by companies like Square Enix (Sanuk Software, too!).

Square Enix has announced its sequels, remakes, spin-offs, and casual titles the company plans to present at the event, most notable on the list -- at least for us -- being a playable Dragon Quest IV. Dragon Quest IX, recently pushed back for a 2008 release, will only show up in video form. Check past the post break for Square Enix's full list of DS RPGs and Style Games for TGS.

Comparing Square Enix's Japanese and US boxart

In a recent interview with 1UP, Square Enix's marketing communications manager gave us some insight on the process behind adapting Chocobo Tales' packaging for the US. We happen to prefer the Japanese version's modest artwork over North America's chaotic cover, but we understand that the company had a younger audience to appeal to and a different message it needed to convey.

We've collected DS covers from Square Enix's Japanese and US releases after the post break for you to compare and decide which one you like best. To its credit, the company hasn't completely mangled its DS boxarts so far (The same can't be said about Nintendo's bastardization of Hotel Dusk's cover). How do you feel about Children of Mana's simplified design? Does Final Fantasy 3's stripped packaging appeal to your western tastes? And do you agree with 1UP that publishers have been doing a better job with dressing their products?

IGN's got their hands on Slime

Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime doesn't have a very usual protagonist. In fact, we can't think of a game that features a blue blob of Jello as the hero. This might be the first.

IGN got to the chance to play the final version of the game and their impressions are rather positive. While we think not having stylus control in the game is rather weak for a system designed to do just that, being able to fight with humongous tank-things in game or with friends is pretty cool. While there aren't any signs of Wi-Fi, the idea of having an entire slime army back you in battle is appealing.

Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime is set to release September 19 and it will be interesting to see how it measures up to all the other fall releases.

Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime Preview

Square-Enix knows how to make money and they do it very well. With Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest (among many others) they dominate the RPG world.

Their latest venture? Spin-offs. Any type of spin-off they can make based off their popular empire they do and loyal fans buy it all... us included.

Square now realizes that they have already abused the hell out of Final Fantasy and they need more spin-off character games and they need them now!

Why not make a game about that cute little slime from Dragon Quest? Sure! We have already seen screens and trailers for DQH:RS and GameSpy has delighted us with another preview for it.

What's unique about this preview is that it starts off with one of the toughest questions of all time -- "Who would win between the Millennium Falcon and the starship Enterprise?" It's a doozy. Better take your time.

We debate the hot topics!
