Dual-screen key feature to DS popularity

The Joplin Globe claims the dual-screen is the key feature to the DS's mass popularity and high sales volume. From the article: "The system's biggest draw, however, is undoubtedly the dual screens. As you may know, the DS flips open to reveal top and bottom screens, the bottom of which is a touch screen. The system comes with a small stylus to aid you, but your fingers work just fine for most things."

We think it's the games that directly affect the popularity. But what, in addition to the dual-screen, make an indirect impact on the system's appeal?

1. I actually just piked up my DS yesterday and have to say that price and game quality were big pluses. Not to mention battery life.

2. The price to games ratio is pretty good on the DS. Sure it could use refinements but all in all the system is great! The dual screens definately help the games by simplifying certain aspects of game play however I don't think it is THE KEY reason for its popularity.

The only competion in the games department the DS has is the GBA. Sure the GBA has a lot of great games but most all of them work on the DS. So with a DS you can't loose!

3. i got a ds because of the possibilities. With the touch screen, the mic, and the GBA expansion slot which could hold gyro sensors or other nifty addons, there is so much to be done with the DS.

4. So many things... Battery life, choice of games, price, features, price of games, etc. But I think above all, I love the touch screen most. It makes old games all the more enjoyable.

Dual screens make many games better even if it's just for a map or something mainly because it totally unclutters the main screen which I love the most. I've always hated having portable games with icons for this and that all over the place. Sometimes, the icons are too small to be useful or either they're so large they distract from gaming. But now, I can choose to look at them or not.

5. I've actually found the dual-screens to be the least cool feature about the DS. I've scarcely seen it used for anything but a minimap. The touch screen, on the other hand, is amazing. It can emulate a mouse, a keyboard, an analog stick, and more.

6. Dual screens are a big selling point, maybe more-so than the touch capabilities. Things like Mario Kart DS use both screens very well; I sometimes use the bottom one more than the top because I can see more and it helps a great deal. That stuff is appealing to people.

Still, battery life, the GBA slot, and the wireless are probably three of the bigger selling points of the system. That, or most consumers still are calling this the next Game Boy.

7. I got it because of what I saw at e3. I was totally impressed with the amount of awesome titles I was able to play. Because of that I was sold. My girlfriend likes the stylus and the two screens. Of course if there weren't any good games on it she would never play hers.

8. Actually, the bottom screen map is a big plus. In the console game X-Men Legends, you either get a teeny tiny map to the side or a giant map obscuring your view. With the DS, you could have a map on the bottom screen, as well as a secondary hud.

I love the prices and, of course, the choice of games.

9. To Nintendo's credit, the so called 'gimmick' as they were called prior to its release ended up becoming a good insight. Fair play to them.

Personally games were the biggest pull alongside touchscreen. I too started off sceptical as my first reaction to the 'touchscreen' was negative, but after some time and thought it became apparent to me how much possibility it opened up.

At the age of 28 I'm relatively bored of most games, on PC and consoles. I haven't seen much change in a decade. Then I heard about DS and it excited me. It was boring while games didn't keep up, but lately the games have been fantastic. I wouldn't be the one to sit and play for hours, but for on-and-off casual entertainment DS is my best console to date.

I may not be an average teenage gamer in love with GTA, but I do like games when they let me like them. And when I find one that's where my money is going. Quite happy to see Nintendo get my money while they keep it up.

10. It's funny, grey, how you say you are a casual gamer, and you have a DS. Awesome. Same here. Although GTA is B-a-n-a-n-a-s.

I love the new way to play, I have lots of puzzle games so the touch screen was so charming and inviting. It's a hybrid system really. I can play Nintendo, in the vaguest form, or I can relax. (So getting Brain Training) There are so many, compared to say, the micro, features on the DS that are so different, that it just naturally appeals to niche gamers; The fanboys, the rationalists, the cheapskates, the frugal, the wise, to the ones that realize the games are original new and exciting, to the ones that grasp for the edge of whats next.
