Nintendo plays numbers game, loses

Nintendo's most recent press release exhibits the interesting quality of simultaneously telling us something we already knew and something we didn't. The first part should be fairly obvious if you boast any familiarity with portly Italian plumbers: New Super Mario Bros. for the DS is a huge success in North America -- certainly nothing worthy of a collective gasp. Selling over 500,000 copies since its May release, the shell-smashing, block-bashing retro platforming trip has practically given Nintendo permission to nonchalantly reach into your pocket, feel around for a few seconds and make off with your wallet.

What we weren't aware of, however, is that Nintendo really should have been sticking their hand into your front shirt pocket. That's where your calculator is. Nintendo claims that after "just 35 days on store shelves," the game has had a sell-through rate of "more than 20 every minute since the game went on sale May 15."

O RLY?

Be sure to mock us if our primitive thought processes are incorrect, but let's consider for a moment that there are 24 hours in a day and 60 minutes in an hour. That's 1,440 minutes a day, and so the 35 days that New Super Mario Bros. has been on sale (even though it's been longer than that now) equates to 50,400 minutes. Divide 500,000 by that number and we get ... just under 10 copies sold per minute. Had Nintendo actually sold 20 copies per minute, they would have already hit over a million, and we're pretty sure that would warrant a press release all on its own. Dr. Kawashima is going to be so disappointed.

1. They probably only counted office hours, and ignored Sunday, too. That'd work out at 20.. Still, 10 copies a minute's still an achievement, right!

2. Maybe they meant during business hours, so about 12 hours/day, then you get ~20 copies/minute.

3. But Stephen, you're reading a "maybe" into the press release that isn't there. It says the game has sold 20 a minute "every minute since" it came out. That's all the minutes between May 15 until now. Also, not all stores are open 12 hours a day. Some stay open for much longer than that. Are we to ignore those hours or...

It's a wonky statistic. That's all I'm saying. :)

5. Lets not forget in this day and age that games can be purchased online at any hour.

6. Like other people said, I'm sure they're only counting during business or daylight hours or something like that. If I were a marketing person and I wanted to bolster my numbers, I would do it that way. Not that Nintendo is lying really, it's just that they weren't exactly clear.

7. The game is on sale in Japan too, and I'm sure people buy it there also... Perhaps Nintendo included those sales without specifically stating so.

Let us remember, the US isn't the entire world after all... Well, not yet anyway. ;)

8. Does this matter? NSMB has been the best selling game at Best Buy for a while now. That's all that matters.

9. Well, how 'bout this, if you couple the US stats with the Japanese sales, which currently sits around 1.5 million, than by your math Nintendo's sold almost 40 every minute since it's US launch.

Ownge.

10. I don't really see the need to scrutinize the numbers and press statements. What's the point of all these at the end of the day? We're all gamers. Not mathematicians or professors. We enjoy gaming and reading gaming news from respectable gaming blogs. That's all it matters.

11. It does matter when the gaming news you get isn't entirely true. If this was a site that just fed you PR nonsense, I doubt you'd be reading it. The wording of this press release isn't entirely accurate -- sure it's not a huge deal in this case, but when we let them get away with it, it'll just give them further opportunity to hit you with fuzzy numbers and half-truths.
