At a recent screening for the third Pirates of the Caribbean film, one critic was denied entry with his DS. Turns out, security made him take it back to his car because they mistook it for a recording device. Yup, the dual-screened handheld (unconfirmed if it was a Lite or not) was not allowed into the screening for fear that it was some sort of video capture device. Of course, a simple boot up of the machine clearly reveals it to be for video games (most people know to associate the name Nintendo with video games, wouldn't you say?), but security still wasn't having it.It's weird because cell phones lacking a camera attachment were allowed to enter the screening, so in hindsight the author says he should've just said it was one of those.

The security is ignorant, but I can't say I'm sad about the situation, why would a person need a DS in a theatre? So that if the movie is boring he can turn it on and ruin the other people's view behind him? I hate when people in front of my have their cellphone open, that small rectangular light is hard to ignore, so imagine 2 big square lights staring back at you

I went to a sneak preview of Grindhouse, and when they were letting people in they announced we weren't allowed to have any game handhelds or phones with cameras. I didn't want to walk all the back to my car, so I hid them in my sweatshirt and got in fine.

I hate Boingboing. They are always pushing this OMFG-we-have-no-more-rights-OMFG-we-live-in-a-fascist-police -state-first-they-come-for-the-technologists-then-they-gas-the-jews!!!one(tm)!1! meme.
I'm surprised cory didn't somehow attempt to link this to DRM and claim George W personally signed the DS barring orders himself.
The fact is, this was for a special screening for the media of an unreleased movie. Its reasonable to assume that higher security measures would be in place. I highly doubt they would take such measures for the normal unwashed movie-going DS-toting public. I'm sure the security guy simply had no idea if the DS is capable of recording a movie, and probably didn't have the time/inclination to find out.

I wonder why the critic had the thing at the screening anyway. Was he planning on playing it while he was supposed to be watching the movie? He sure had his priorities straight.

Maybe he wanted to play it during the numerous advertisements and previews before the movie. I usually bring mine in for that very purpose.

If you people would actually read the article, you'd find the following line: "I absolutely need that sucker [the DS] as the minutes tick down before the movie starts, to pass the inevitable delays as the P.R. folks try to scramble to get people in seats before they let the projector roll."

I can't imagine being so hard up to see a movie that I can't wait 3 more days. Especially Pirates 3; Pirates 2 didn't exactly thrill me.
