September NPD: we can live with bronze

Normally, we'd be unhappy with third place in the NPD sales round-up, but just look at the sales last month! It seems like everyone bought something, so we really can't complain. We can afford to be magnanimous about it; after all, we'll be back on top soon enough.

All jokes aside, it is interesting to note that sales of the Nintendo systems didn't really drop -- rather, Xbox 360 sales simply increased, thanks to the incredible power of Halo 3. No matter what happens with the rest of the industry, Nintendo is looking more and more like a rock in the volatile market.
  • Microsoft Xbox 360: 527,800
  • Nintendo Wii: 501,000
  • Nintendo DS: 495,800
  • Sony PlayStation 2: 215,000
  • Sony PSP: 284,500
  • Sony PlayStation 3: 119,400
Which two DS games slid into the top ten last month? Hit the break to find out.

1. Halo 3 (all three SKUs - Xbox 360) – 3.3 million
2. Wii Play w/ remote (Wii) – 282K
3. Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass (DS) – 224K
4. Madden NFL 08 (PS2) – 205K
5. Skate (Xbox 360) – 175K
6. Madden NFL 08 (Xbox 360) – 173K
7. Metroid Prime 3: Corruption (Wii) – 167K
8. BioShock (Xbox 360) – 150K
9. Brain Age 2: More Training in Minutes a Day (DS) – 141K
10. Heavenly Sword (PS3) – 139K

That's humiliating.

Everyone expected the 360 to take the lead with Halo 3, so no surprise there, but I am a bit surprised by how close it was. The 360 only outsold the Wii by 26 thousands units, the only smaller gap between places being the one between the Wii and the DS itself.

Also good to see Phantom Hourglass had a pretty nice month. Hopefully its sales remain steady, a fine game it tis!

It annoys me when people take sales ratings so seriously. The system I play the most lately is my PlayStation 3, which is the lowest in sales currently. Does that harm my enjoyment of the system? Hell no. The only thing that should matter is what is number one in your heart.

Linebeginstoblur,

No one seems to be taking it overly seriously, but it is video game news, and as gamers, we are bound to comment, no?

Its great that you don't let sales bother you; you shouldn't. It would be pathetic for people to be playing their PSPs, Gamecubes, PS3's etc saying "I would be LOVING this if it only sold more".

Never-the-less news is news, and as gamers, we find it interesting. Halo 3 sales, Metroid Corruption, Phantom Hourglass, its fun to compare how these games have sold, and how their accompanying consoles have.

What is REALLY entertaining is how much PS3 is sucking it big time! It will be even more humiliating when the new 40gb sku doesn't sell...
