Tales of Innocence just got a little more interesting. New screens on Famitsu reveal that Tales has a feature found commonly in western RPGs, but rarely in Japanese RPGs: character creation. In addition to designing a character's appearance, you can also mess with their AI rules for combat-- Tales of Innocence automates helper character actions, meaning that your input in combat comes from the rules you set for the characters (and the movements you make as the playable lead character). You can also assign different weapons with elemental and status effects to these new characters. You'll have to go find the materials to make these weapons, of course.

Hmm I was reading the article, I think there was a misinterpretation..
The article wrote that players can customize the characters in the story to the styles they like (those that can be seen in the article are Advance (probably offence-oriented), Wisdom and Guardian). However I can't find any mentioning of totally custom characters...
AI-wise, the article wrote that you can assign 5 levels of AI to the characters that you're not controlling, much like FFXII's Gambit system. Basically the the move in Rank 1 will take priority over the moves in Ranks 2 to 5.
As for equipment, it's pretty much like an upgraded version of Tales of the Tempest's. You get a basic weapon, take it to a smithy, and customize it by adding up to two 'Special Effects' and one 'Ability'.
