Okamoto: Second 'Atari crash' possible for DS

In a Gamasutra interview, Game Republic's Yoshiki Okamoto issued a warning to Nintendo (and the game industry as a whole) regarding the amount of DS software that is flooding Japan: "People are talking about how the second "Atari crash" is around the corner. And Nintendo is the one that has to figure out a way to stop it."

Here, Okamoto is referring to the 1983 video game crash, brought about largely by a rush of third-party developers releasing junk games on the super-popular Atari 2600 system. He sees a parallel in the explosion of training titles being put together for Japan. Okamoto should recognize imitators when he sees them -- he is the creator of one of the most-imitated games of all time. We hope that the Japanese market can survive or even flourish from a glut of software, because we like the video game industry.

Age of Hella Cheap Games

Always looking our for our wallets' best interests, CheapyD of Cheap Ass Gamer fame scrounged up a selection of Nintendo DS games that're currently on sale for $14.99 at Amazon. Some of the titles, like Superman Returns and Crash Boom Bang, probably should've been pitched into the trash dumpster out back instead of into the bargain bin, but we understand that there are a number of laws and regulations against disposing hazardous waste like that.

If you haven't picked them up yet, Age of Empires: The Age of Kings and Sonic Rush are included in the sale, both of them being games we've lauded time and time again. Age of Kings, in particular, will always hold a special place in our hearts with its turn-based-strategy adaptation of the popular PC series. Presumably, that place would be right in between our love for Fruit Roll-Ups and our infatuation with all things zombie related. 'Crash' of the Titans headed to Nintendo systems

We weren't too impressed with Crash Boom Bang!, Crash Bandicoot's minigame-filled debut on the Nintendo DS. Crash Tag Team Racing DS couldn't even manage to drive itself out of the studio before the project was scrapped. Third time's the charm, maybe?

Crash of the Titans brings the series to not only the DS, but the GBA and Wii. Screenshots of the Wii title indicate that the blue-jeaned marsupial will be thrown back into his natural, platforming/adventure-gaming habitat, freeing him from the wacky genres that've watered down the franchise. Players will be able to unlock extra elements in the Wii version with a DS copy of the game.

We're much too cautious to let another Crash Bandicoot title get our hopes up, but we wish Radical Entertainment all the best with its development. Though the Spanish magazine that unveiled Crash of the Titans mentioned an October release, the game isn't guaranteed to arrive in the US at the same date.
