Ah, at last we can check out some of those
Bit-plane shots from
Populous DS without all those pesky watermarks fudging up the corners. There are also some other, newer screens in the mix, all loaded into our gallery below.
Unfortunately, we still haven't seen anything on a release outside of Japan, but considering how popular the game has been over the years, and the fact that it is viewed as
the god game by many, surely we'll hear something. Eventually. Probably. Right?
Here's hoping.

The civilizations you build in
Populous DS can grow in different areas of the
Populous world, developing wildly different cultures.
Famitsu has revealed these cultures and the warriors produced by each.
By far the most interesting area you can build is the Nintendo-themed land of Bitplane, in which buildings are gigantic Nintendo consoles and the inhabitants are made of pixel-like cubes. Basically, it's just like our minds, except that we assume useful work gets done within its confines.
Our other favorite new location is Mars -- not because we
hate liquid water (apparently the denizens are
grateful for tsunamis), but because it is protected by caped superheroes. And also because we're just going to assume that the cities are full of circa-1990 Spike Lees.

The artificially-generated virtual Toy Shop, that is, not one of the thousands of toy shops around the world that already carry the DS. Uh, in a game. In other, clearer words,
Majesco has announced a new DS game called
Toy Shop for an April release, developed by Gameinvest.
The game is a business simulation in which players, as Mel and Mark, inheritors of their grandfather's toy shop, do their best to make sure they don't ruin the family business. The player is in charge of making toys (via minigames), setting prices, monitoring customer satisfaction, and maintaining the appearance and layout of the store. The game will allow the player to choose the level of interaction, from simply making toys all the way up to micromanagement of the store.
We're all about making toys on the DS, but we aren't sure about the whole dealing-with-people aspect. Luckily it sounds like we'll be able to enjoy the toymaking part and ignore the human interactions, just like in real life. We have the first screens of
Toy Shop available in our gallery.

We don't know how many of you are interested in importing this world-builder god sim, but for those considering it, you might find this (non-embeddable) trailer to be worth watching. The game looks like it has plenty of deities and levels to keep sim lovers busy for a while. The short cutscenes are also looking cool, and we think they add a nice touch when it comes to reaping destruction on the land.
The game will be importable soon, as
Populous DS is set to release in Japan on February 21st.

What do tractors, video games, and shoveling up cow poop have in common? If you guessed
John Deere: Harvest in the Heartland, you probably read the title of this review. In case you haven't heard of this brand-licensed game, though, it's essentially a farming simulator that was recently released for the Nintendo "Niche Games Haven" DS.
While the brand might not mean much to gussied up city folk, Deere & Company happens to be the world's leading manufacturer of farming equipment (thanks, Wikipedia!). In fact, the John Deere brand became so popular that it incited a horrible fashion trend a few years ago that led to people who weren't truckers wearing trucker hats. But, what does this all mean for
Harvest in the Heartland? Is it possible that John Deere would not only find success in agriculture and fashion, but in video games as well? Let's find out, shall we?

We don't think we can top the two
hilariously horrible DS game trailers we showed you last week, but this one comes pretty close.
The premise behind the XBLA port
Elements of Destruction is simple enough: you play as a force of nature and destroy a bunch of stuff. It's reminiscent of those times in
Sim City when you'd send a bunch of natural disasters (and Godzilla) to mess up your town (you sick bastard), only this time you actually control the disasters.
Not only does the game look, well,
bad, but the trailer just makes everything worse with its
EXTREME!!! effects. You can't even see anything because flames, lightning, and tornadoes keep interfering with the screen. Maybe the team behind this trailer should have taken notes from the people who did the
Crossfire commercial.
Check after the break to see some
Elements screens, or we'll make sure the next meteor shower hits your mother's town.

Is anyone else interested in some sort of
Spore meets
Harvest Moon hybrid? If you are, the future might very well be a rosy place, indeed, because
Harvest Moon creator Yasuhiro Wada dreams of making a game similar to Will Wright's creation sim. He recently told Gamasutra, "Eventually, I'd like to make something like
Spore, where you create something, and from there, new stuff is going to be created again and again and again ... But you want to be one of the people living in the city, and to be a part of this growing too."
Wada also said that
King's Story (which was his concept) was originally supposed to be more like
Spore than what it turned into. We like how
King's Story is shaping up, so we're not really bothered that it deviated from its original idea, but it still would be nice to see Wada's true vision ultimately realized. Hopefully we'll one day see this
Spore-like game that he wishes to make.

We may have to wait a long time before
Rune Factory 2 gets released outside of Japan, but that doesn't mean we can't be excited. Not only is Japan getting the game in January (those lucky bastards), but certain limited editions will come with this soundtrack disc and art book. We hope these goodies come our way when the game comes out here, although we highly doubt it.
Judging from the cover of the art book, the style of the game is very similar to the first
Rune Factory. Pictured are the main character (whose name is Kyle) and some girl with crazy eyes. We also like the contemplative looking dragon in the background. The soundtrack, meanwhile, includes arranged versions of four songs from the game. Pretty neat bonus, we think. Anyone else as jealous as we are?

Hey, awesome! A
Marble Madness level generator for the DS! ... Oh, wait, no, it's just
Populous DS. That's okay too, we suppose. It's just ... it looks a lot like
Marble Madness, and we like
Marble Madness in general better than strategy-type sim games where you build OH HEY look at that guy! He's pretty impressive!
Does anyone else find it interesting that Japanese publications get the scoops on this game? It's a remake of a very Western game from a very Western developer, published by
EA! But so far, the only release date the game has is the Japanese date of December 31st. It could be that a Japanese EA team is porting it -- or maybe EA wants to give us plenty of time with
EA Playground before announcing another big game.

Almost two months since its game was announced,
Electronic Arts has finally published tangible details and the first screenshots for Populous DS in this week's issue of
Famitsu.
Due next February 21st, this remake of the god game will feature both touchscreen and classic controls, though these isometric sims seem to lend themselves to the former. In addition to four different modes -- Challenge, Free Play, VS (up to four players, and Gallery --
Populous DS will come packed with popular maps from its many, many previous editions on PCs and consoles. Peek past the post break for a camera-phone shot of the
Famitsu page.

Considering the popularity of
Project Runway -- and yes, we admit to being avid fans of the show and Tim Gunn's flair -- we're surprised that more games like
Fashion Designer: Style Icon haven't been announced for the DS.
Scheduled for release this November, the
sim takes young designers through fashion school, offering opportunities for graduates to "start a workshop, accept private design contracts, supply small boutiques, and set up mail order companies." That's a lot more depth than we would've expected from a game with such a
pink-and-purple-dominated palette!
We doubt there'll be any online functionality, but developer Creative Patterns promises to include multiplayer "design-offs" where you can battle your friends on the catwalk. "Carry on" and "make it work" while you check the gallery for three new
Fashion Designer: Style Icon screenshots.

The latest from
MySims DS looks so much like
Animal Crossing that we kept scanning the background for Tom Nook. There's even a fishing interlude. And according to IGN's interview with producer Mitch Ueno, "You can even design your clothes with the DS stylus." The only real difference is in the character designs, so if you
hate animals, but always wanted to play
Animal Crossing, your day is coming.
Despite our disparaging tone, we here at DS Fanboy will probably turn in hundreds of hours on
MySims, especially if you can power off the DS without getting a ten-minute lecture.

This
Jam Sessions video is just too great -- we love the way it's shot, so that it looks like the guy is actually playing a guitar, and then ... oho!
Behold, for it is a DS Lite.
What
can't the DS do? We keep waiting for it to just take over the world. While we await our new DS overloards, hit the jump for the video.
