I recommend Nitro Tracker. Its a nice little tracker program where you can load up different sounds in .wav format and arrange them to make beats or music. I like to use it to make drum patterns and bass lines. Just be sure you have some decent headphones.

Get the CycloDS Evolution.

It is the best flashcart on the market in my opinion and many others. It is definitely the best supported, since their team is English speaking. They have many more firmware updates that anyone else and the interface is awesome.
Other than that, all you need is a MicroSD card to store games/homebrew.

For great exposure to DS homebrew visit www.gbatemp.net
They quite regularly hold contests for homebrew, host the homebrew and display new homebrew right on the front page.

I second NitroTracker. I like to take it on walks around the neighborhood, sampling anything that makes noise, and working it into a song.
DScratch is also a lot of fun. The new version that can play multiple tracks will be out sometime in the next couple of days. I can't wait.

If you're not afraid to extract a backup, Contra 4 makes for a nice NES emulator
